This is the first video in our dark sky camping series. Since we are a family of RVers known for shooting landscape astrophotography, we felt it was time to share our trips to all of the places with minimal light pollution we like to visit when camping.
On this particular astrotourism trip, we started at a Bortle 1 park well known for its dark skies: Black Mesa State Park in Oklahoma. This low level of light pollution puts it among the darkest skies in America and the perfect place to see the Milky Way.
For more information about dark skies and how to be an astrotourist RVer, check out our website: RWTAdventures.com.

Very cool ,we where there for a few night a little over a month ago. Unfortunately for us it stayed cloudy the entire time.We did have fun visiting the nice poeple at the nearby hoot owl ranch, they showed us awsome petroglyphs and lots of artifacts found on property. If you saw the Easter thing just north of the park that road takes you back about a half mile where you turn left and go on the back side of those hills. We found shallow caves that had petroglyphs and found a small unfinished arrowhead.

Too bad about the clouds. You definitely need to go back and see the dark skies. We'll have to return to see the petroglyphs. Good tip! 👍

Oh my word, those rotating timelapses were incredible! Mesmerizing, i would say. Fantastic work. Based on a quick glance of that map it didn't look like there are any dark skies east of the Mississippi!!

Thanks! It's a bit sad. We're working to bring more awareness. Hopefully we can change all that one day so everyone can stargaze all over. What color on the map is your hometown in?

@@RoadtrippinwithTakacs We are about in a Class 6! On the verge of that light purple and red.

@@DMSAdventures Yikes. We're in the red. 😐 What about that park I see in many of your videos?

@@RoadtrippinwithTakacs It looks like the best in Indiana is Class 3 but I don't think there is even a park or anything over there. The best rating in any of the parks we go to is class 4.... which isn't terrible when that is what you are used to!

That'll work! You can see the Milky Way from a 4 (green).

Did you happen to see some flying mantas or some military aircrafts? Just curious.

@@RoadtrippinwithTakacs I was referencing the hit 1998 half-life, won 56+ game of the year awards. It takes place in a research facility called Black Mesa in New Mexico, and you guessed it, in includes the military and aliens.
