Thanks for enjoying the episode everyone, the comments have been extremely fun so far. I do hope people looking to get into the game get some actual knowledge out of the rather clickbait setup for the challenge. A LOT of effort went into this one, hopefully it shows. I also learned the UK's criminally low prices INCLUDE TAX? So your prices are actually like 10-20% lower than they look already? We need to colonize the UK so we can get ahold of cheaper minis. I went through a really old flash drive from 2005.. (25 mb) I had a screen shot on it of an imperial guard army I wanted to eventually get. 3 boxes of Cadians (20 guys per box), ~$27 per box, 2 leman russ, ~$29 per box, Basilisk, ~$27 per box, and a Heavy weapon team ~$27 (3 hwts per box).... yeah it was kind of sad.
I saw a post on the Emperor's Children sub reddit the other day, about a guy who posted that white Egyptian guy titled "Us" on the Thousand Sons reddit and got banned immediately. The people in the EC all laughs while the Ksons banned him. Lore accurate I say.
Omg is this the fated "affordable armies episode three where they get fed up and talk about 3d printers" episode that was foretold in the ancient myths??? I never thought I'd see the day
@@skillfulwave6592 I think AoS is a quite a bit harder for this just because the secondary market is so much smaller. Still you see an okay amount of stuff going up on MiniSwap.
An army painting race would be fun, or maybe a budget army painting video where you only use budget tools to paint your armies to stick on theme with being on a budget.
Define budget. I mean, I can get an airbrush and a pump for 35 bucks shipped with prime. A gallon of distilled water is 1.39, and each color is 58 cents.
Also, speaking of taxes - "when you see a price you assume that's plus tax..." [laughs in Australian, where it is literally illegal for a stated shelf-price to not include tax] Hooray for good consumer protection laws! EDIT: bartering with the kangaroos is generally fine, but watch out for the magpies, they're worse than the card games corner of eBay =P
@@KittyFaerie1 Yeah, hearing "when you see a price you assume that's plus tax" as a european is so incredibly funny. I don't even know what the current tax rate is and I literally could not care less.
On the issue you guys had with finding good deals for guard, the Guard community is famously thrifty and has a habit of swooping up any “fair” deals immediately. It’s the equivalent of ork players always kitbashing that Guard players are always looking for good deals to expand their armies.
If sellers don't want 'low balls' they can set a min and it gets auto rejected. Without a min you'd be surprised how little people will let something go for just to get rid of it.
This is how I plan on painting my loyalist Space Marines. They're gonna be mid-activation of cloaking devices, so I can paint them partially in loyalist color schemes, and partially in Alpha Legion heraldry.
The best and cheapest way to build a SM army is just to buy HH stuff. You get 20 marines for 70 bucks. Slap the right weapon on them, and you are good as green. You also get 10 terminators for 80. For vehicles, they are the easiest thing to find on eBay.
This is a very good idea, the way that 30k marines are equipped means that the units transfere to primaris single- weapon units really easily. Buying one box of tactical marines and a weapon upgrade kit can get you 5 "intercessors" 10 "hellblasters" and 5 "infernus squads" for one example. The rhino variants are all gorgeous, new models that are great to put together (with the exception of one part that's a pain) and the land raider proteus is a great model as well.
@@ergonamix9977 does the new mk. 3 come with special weapons? I'm not sure about getting the old tactical squads, as the weapon upgrade kits are made to directly fit into specific poses in the new kits.
So as a fairly new Guard player, a guy with a lasgun is a guy with a lasgun. Only problem with the Solar Auxiliaria which are beautiful sculpts is no special weapons. Same with the Russes, they’re great, but no sponsons, I hear you might have a solution I don’t have to that problem named 3d printing. I do think a truer Guard list would even now have a little indirect, but there are definitely people Guard who run tank spam, or all infantry or other meme lists. You did great, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
Saw someone selling a tau lot near my city back in the fall for 300$. Guy had 300$ worth of unopened crisis boxes alone, along with a couple tanks, speeders, big mechs, and at least 40 troops from what I remember. Between jobs and still am so I couldn't justify spending the money, but I would have been SET if I could have picked it up.
My idea for what to do with the models. You send them around to as many 40k/painting RU-vidrs as you can and say they can get content. Have them paint up a unit, then rank all of them on a tier list against each other.
Europeans, if you don't know. US sale taxes are variable local taxes on basically everything. They vary by 4%-10%, but plan on 7%-10% is smart. The federal taxes on gasoline/petrol or liquor is included in the price. Welcome to the USA!
In Europe, sales taxes are also variable local taxes that vary greatly from country to country. And the EU mandates that prices shown include sales tax for full transparency pre purchase. Welcome to Europe 😂
It's not just Europe tho.. only the USA and Canada do not include the full price on the tag. Most places use the full price. Definitely bias, but it always feel weird, because those taxes are know before the purchase and think it's weird that it is blammed on the store even tho it is the store who pays those taxes and should be included in the price. There is no tax man who runs in stores raising prices how it sometimes feels in America. It is not a big thing and it is just what you are used to, but it is one of those things I will never understand probably
There was a popular eBay scam a couple months ago where people were listing hard to find minis but just the box for it? Like the box that the sprues come in, and nothing else. Almost got tricked into buying a loonshrine box that way before I realized.
I have accidentally done the $500 challenge for knights at MSRP over the course of like 3 years. I live in Canada, so converting USD to CAD I have a budget of $682 I started off in December 2021 getting a knight castellan for $190, and a box of helverins for $85. Later that month I got a box of warglaves for $90. At the end of 2022 I got the chain breaker lance for $250 I am now the proud owner of: 1 knight castellan (525 pts for $190) 2 armiger warglaves (300 pts for $90) 2 armiger helverins (280 pts for $85) Chain breaker lance ($250) 1 knight errant (405 pts) 2 armiger helverins (290 pts) 2 armiger warglaves (300 pts) Total points: 2090 Total cost in CAD: $615 Total cost converting to USD: $450.77 TLDR if your faction has a really good Christmas box, consider buying it. I got 3 free little knights for its cost
If you do the 3D printing version of this episode down the line, please make sure to reach out to creators and ask if they're ok with being featured on a video with such a topic, for the sake of their legal safety.
I'm sorry, but if a 3d model creator is that scared of legal safety because they deliberately made models that are 99% close to official GW models, it's the creators fault
Money question: which kits and how many would you have to buy in the UK and then sell at US prices to pay for the trip? Assuming the cost for a round trip at $1000, and no additional cost for shoving them in a big duffel bag or suitcase
When I went to the UK for work I went with a huge empty suitcase and filled it up with warhammer boxes, I placed an order with wayland and had it delivered to the hotel
Hey this sounds fun, let’s try… UK pricing (that all include tax), 25% LGS discount. Guess every single army fits. It may be cold, miserable, and we’re terrible at all the sports we invented. But you can’t take the fact GW stuff is only very overpriced rather than extremely overpriced here away ;) Although pour one out for NZ/AUS…
„You‘re not supposed to just spend $500 all at once“ Me, who definitely didn’t just buy five daemon princes because I wanted one for each god plus a undivided one. I don’t even play Daemons. Please, send help.
ironic that you call the Death Guard, Necrons, Tyranid half of the intro boxes the "little brother army." when I got the 8th edition box as my 1st 40k thing, I took the death guard half because I wanted the cool bad guys, and I gave my little brother the lame space marine half
The £ literally being worth $1.28 dollars right now. Also buys way more Warhammer cos they make it here and most of the 3rd party stores ship within the UK for free. So the Adeptus Custodes combat patrol is (logging into the Warhammer store as if I am from the US) $168, which by exchange would be £131, but the combat patrol from GW in England is £100, ($128), and from a third party store I can get the Custodes combat patrol for £80, ($102), with free delivery. So getting an army for $500 in the UK is honestly way way easier, that is around £390, you could also literally get it all new and no ebay needed. US and Australia/NZ especially a lot harder to do 40k on a budget I think.
Idea for "outsourcing" the painting process: Bricky has a couple of Vtubers he's been streaming with lately that have expressed at least a passing interest in 40K tabletop. Perhaps he could convince them to do a 'yapping a painting' stream with a couple of them while you three answer their lore questions? Alternatively, partnering with Ninjon or PlayOn or Squidmar to paint one of the armies could get it done. Or you could host a painting competition where you establish the paint scheme and the contestants pick a unit and get to painting. Yes, there will be some stylistic and skill level differences, but the army would def be unique. And as long as you established the exact colors to be used, then the army will still look cohesive. Winner can get a swag box or a VTT game with you two or get to be a guest on an episode to talk about mini painting or something.
Alright, this week's shill% times are 0:35 for merch (Disqualified; "This is not just a shilling") and Patreon at 2:34 (and 3:14). The Pleasantries% time is 57:14. Calling me out in the episode shall not grant you any favors, hence me disqualifying the merch shout out... but I may buy a mug.
Brad: "This is insanity land. Do not buy a 2000 point army to start off" Me: *Hides my 7 2000+ point armies I bought in a year since starting* Over 4k in a lot of those because I have issues
Troll Trader is an amazing place to purchase second hand models for folks in the US. Yes, they're in the UK, but the shipping to the US is cheap flat rate (8 British bucks I think.) The models always come packed very well. Shipping takes about 2 weeks. Their selection is massive - stuff on spure, built, partially painted, and fully painted, etc.
This is a great video, I like the idea of getting each of the members in your play group to paint one of the armies and then y’all can do showcases of the armies and maybe use them in a hoard mode or a crazy 4-person battle
FYI. CSM gets cheaper to buy because Chosen technically are so close to Legionaries that you can run them as Chosen instead. Just pose em differently. So CSM gets closer to "This is cheating" tier.
I found this episode compelling, as someone who has been buying classic 40k models on ebay with absolutely no intention of it turning into a full army.
I bought my first army from a Craigslist posting of someone local selling 2500 poi to of space marines, I think it was like a double of the 2nd or 3rd edition starter set assembled and painted, for $500 with a large Crystal Cases case. I met, talk3d to the guy, and told him about it being my first Amy, and he cut me a deal for $300 and a promise to send him a few pictures of it being played. We shook hands and I stuck to the deal. I still have that as a sizable section of my army, and despite them being surfs I doubt I'll repaint them because of the memory
One thing to keep in mind with second hand miniatures is that there is no guarantee for the level of modelling quality if that's something you care of. Uncleaned mould lines and thick paint are a thing. If you just want to play, then it's fine. But turning them to an army that also looks good will take extra effort.
brake fluid, greenstuff and a drill are my friends for these "rescues" strip paint, fix any holes and maybe even add more holes for "battle damage" and then paint.
What hurts me right now is that I haven't finished my first two armies, I've been looking at necrons, and now you just gave me hope for guard. I really want to build a Canadian themed Guard army... Because using it in 40K just makes the Geneva checklist joke even better
Im gonna be honest, the WHOLE TIME I was listening i was like "this is cool, shame the only mention of my beloved guard is gonna be possibly bullying cadians again" and then you ACTUALLY HAD IT, my day is made
My parents are currently in Sweden, so I asked them to pick up a Mk. III tactical squad kit for me. It would cost 134 AUD here. There, it costs around about 90 AUD. So yeah, handy tip: if you want cheap WH kits, go to Europe.
Raffle one of the armies off, the person chooses which one out of the armies they want// Then have a competition between yourselves and the person that wins the army in an epic paint off!
Joke's on you, I was looking BACK because I started watching baseball and came back to credits! Seriously though, these videos are super helpful for people like me who have a limited budget, and it's really appreciated.
You should do a paint challenge! Maybe keep it to poorhammer crew or maybe bricky and friends? Tell us how yall tackle painting and the entire army in 1 week? 2 weeks? A reasonable month? I'd love to hear a 2-3 hr episode with interviews with how everyone tackled it, what quality they got it to, etc. I know logistically. You all said 4 was the max for episode cast, but I see poorhammer constantly pushing their own evolope, so now that yall have the armies.... gotta paint em!
As someone who plays guard, I'm gonna come out and say it; That list is neat. It's probably not gonna do great against Khorne and Orks, but it's still a good fun list. I'm honestly more disappointed you didn't do the meme list of 4 Baneblade variants and Lord Solar (because it's funny; 1 Baneblade, 1 Stormlord, 1 Stormsword, 1 Shadowsword, and 1 Lord Solar).
You guys have such soothing voices. I don't come here because I want to spend 500 on warhammer, I come here because I don't want to spend 500 on therapy! Seriously though I love the content, keep it up.
Not sure if this has been done before, or if it's a terrible idea, but a fun video idea is "What armies are the best looking/most fun to kitbash with Orks". Gives Eric a chance to really show off how fun and customizable an Ork army is.
Paying my taxes for looking (but not skipping, we don't condone time travel) ahead. Also thanks for showing us the miniswap subreddit, plan to make some use of it later to get MOAR ORKZ.
Love this! I got into 40k this year (because Poorhammer kept playing after Solely Singleton episodes...) and I was able to build a Sisters army for less than $500. Found a great bulk deal of like 1250 points (Vahl, old Combat Patrol, Celestian Sacs, Paragon, etc.) on Miniswap for $250 and combined that with 2 of the old Combat Patrol that I got for $120 each on Amazon. Obviously not the best 2k army and I've spent too much since then, but I've been very happy with it.
The return of the king 👑👑👑 ..... Of saving money.... Also berelio you used the land raider crusader in the bataslate episode no the land raider redeemer
I loved this! As someone recently buying minis, this was great. Sitting on a bunch of Tau from like 15 years ago, kept watching as many different market places as I could looking for the old CP, so this all felt super relatable right now! Also had to keep telling myself to buy one thing at a time and not just jump to trying to finish off a whole 2k points. I'd love to see a video like this for AoS too if you guys ever end up doing more content for that.
I finally had time to finish all Rememberances and Bayle. Going to really enjoy doing randomizer runs with the DLC weapons in the pool for unique feeling runs. Berilio is still mid DLC because someone made him spend 12 days tinkering with the editing on this episode.
Ironically I asked on Reddit if someone has had experience with the combat Patrols and know which factions are close match. Ofc I got spammed with all of them all balanced equally and that I am the only one who think some match-ups do not feel fair as a starting match
I was getting really hyped for this, and then realised I in am a child living in Australia and 500 dollars plus shipping is equivalent to roughly 1000 dollars. Sigh
"When you see a price tag, you always assume 'plus tax', that's just how it works." It definitely isn't in the civilised parts of the globe, no. When I see a price tag, I assume that's the literal amount of money I have to fork over and then I'm done with it.
Guys Im absolutely grateful for your approach to skip the most obvious factions & easy deals you could do. Actually diving into the challenge and going out for the proper steals, like a normal player would try to. Amazing results, really epic finds with this Imperial Guard army :)
Great episode guys, thanks for doing the work! An idea that I'm sure you've already had: Brad's shrinkflation hypothesis didn't pan out for the holiday boxes, but I bet it sure would for the new combat patrols. I'd love to see you guys explore that and give your opinions on the new boxes in general. Keep up the good work!
maybe do a campaign? each player has to build and paint the part of their army that is necessary for the next fight without having to paint the full army. and with generous time limits between each fight this could make a good and fun set of videos that show how you build, paint and play your new forces.
