Not even... Detroit died because their main industry got outsourced. Oakland is backed by tech, biotech, a major Kaiser hospitals, and other finance buildings, and they're shooting themselves in the foot....
Try living close to downtown Portland Oregon. Bums, assorted drug addicts, throwaway kids, drunks, and just plain batshit crazy people. Moving to Vegas. Much more quiet in Henderson. Only it cost more is the problem and after funding the Oregon State tax for decades, it would have been much nicer to enjoy the places these homeless destroy on a daily basis. So many of the nice parks are so scary, you’re risking your life entering them.
I came to this country in the mid 80s and settled in SF. Even back then Oakland already had a reputation as a crime ridden city. But the current situation is on an entirely new level.
@@Ap_twsh I think they mean other cities that border Oakland like Berkeley, San Leandro, Emeryville, and in cities adjacent to those like Richmond. Oakland is in the urban core but even a few suburbs like Antioch are getting bad.
No. Community couldn’t accept constitutional policing but wants military with scary assault rifles to be able to violate all our rights. Thats how we lose all our rights.
Great job Oakland! So glad Sheng Thao fired the police chief and hasn't hired a new one. So happy that Pamela Price thinks criminals shouldn't be prosecuted and sent to jail. These two outstanding individuals have invited criminals to come in and take everything until there is nothing left.
Even though I am a Republican, I would have to say that just changing local government wouldn't work overnight though. It also takes community involvement, not just putting it upon the authorities. The one guy said, "...I want somebody to protect the citizens." What are you going to do, have cops stationed in each and every public place in the city? Be realistic! It takes parents seeing to proper education for their kids and not punishing the teachers who try to do it!
Yes is does and it is. That’s y I refuse to go to Oakland. But it’s mostly certain parts. Richer areas are still clear. Because a lot of these criminals shite where they eat.
@@valerieneal2747 your name calling won't work. I spoke the truth. Debate me on the facts. Oh, I forgot, facts are racist. Deny that it's blacks committing the crime.
@@middleguy1776 quit blaming problems of city life on voting "blue".. there is just as much crime in red city states as well i.e. Birmingham AL and Memphis TN! Keep voting red and say goodbye to freedom and democracy! Pathetic that you are willing to give up so much by supporting an authoritarian dictator who bankrupts everything!
@@middleguy1776 Not sure where my comment went.. It's ridiculous to blame voting "blue" for the crime that many cities are having to deal with.. considering there are many cities that are "red" that have even more crime than oakland. stop voting red b/c it is clearly rotting your brain.
Translation: Most of us in the Bay area are responsible for the way things are, but we don't care, we'll continue to vote our once beautiful city into complete and total disrepair.. We'll then move to a red state and start the process all over again.
It's not even a question of voting blue Even the few republicans living in Oakland if they were in elective office, would be afraid to address the issue. @@AerialEscape
@@John-pz6nmriddle me this than. If budget went up and they have 50% less cops where’s the money? Bro you all but disbanded the police. That’s cool that’s what you wanted.
You can act like this is a joke, but the truth of the matter is, the more you crap and leave trash in Oakland, the more theft in Pleasanton. We all live in the same region. Stop being so flip and divisive.
Crazy to me that anyone would want to open or retain a business in Oakland. At this point, cut your losses and just move your business to another less dangerous city. The warning signs, red flags, etc are all there... if you choose to ignore them then you cant really complain about it.
Voting doesn't elect potential candidates; special interest groups select candidates who favor their interests. Voting is now for show and is really just meaningless activity
@@Regenold-o4y - That or RFK Jr. Anyone is better than Biden and the corrupt Democrats (this is coming from a former Democrat of 30+ years who became a Libertarian who votes Republican since 2010). You should really educate yourself, research, and cast off your propaganda brainwashing or we are all doomed to enslavement.
ASK WHY THEY CLOSED THE CITY JAIL LONG AGO ? IF THEY REOPEN IT THEY CAN TAKE CRIMINALS DOZENS AT A TIME TO THE COUNTY JAIL IN PLEASANTON INSTEAD OF ONLY ONE CRIMINAL AT A TIME TO THE COUNTY JAIL . THE DOWNTOWN OAKLAND JAIL NEEDS TO BE REOPENED
@@lynsylva-bb6ss yes , there used to be a jail downtown years ago . That is the problem . If they arrest someone then that means a police officer has to drive one person to the county jail in Pleasanton but if the city jail was opened they could just take them there and when they have a bus load of criminals they would only need a few police officers to take them away from the city . When they release someone from Santa Rita county jail they can choose to go to a different at the bus stop outside the county jail
Oakland is about 25% black but they account for 80% of the crime. Hard work pays off. Ironically, they will meet their estranged father for the first time when they are cellmates in prison.
The stolen car thing is actually insane. I don’t really notice it anymore because it’s so common. But you’ll see so many as you drive around. Gallo for mayor!
Gallo is just a talking head. Need I remind you he's been in Oakland government for a long time. If he was the right fit for the job he'd be in charge by now.
Gallo is literally the most worthless of the council members. All he does it photo ops. Whenever he makes a promise like this he never follows through and unlike Nikki fortunato he doesn’t even respond to emails.
‘There’s only so much we can do” what a ridiculous statement. Put these losers in prison and throw away the key. We need to hold our officials accountable, including Newsom
Why didn't the interviewer ask any of those citizens about whether better parenting and better socialization with better values might have prevented some of the shut-downs in the community?
The mayor believes that everything is improving and doesn't want you to see all the bad stuff about Oakland, as it would reflect poorly on her or force her to blame it on her predecessor. “This was all happening before I even arrived.”What are your thoughts on the matter?
Its amazing how far we've come. As a youth, I was not allowed in Disneyland till I tucked my shirt tail in. Then another time Police came to my parents house to stop me from spray painting a door on my car in my own driveway! Still....those days were a million times better.
Complaining about crime but not doing anything about it. Hundreds of thousands unvetted illegal criminals just waltzing into the US with no way to support themselves in such an expensive state.
Protection rackets might return. Businesses Paying a gang $200 a week to protect the property, the customers, the employees & business owners might be a very good investment.
The mayor, city officials and the pope of Oakland have allowed all this mess to happen. Accountability and a consequence is needed to stop all this nonsense.
It looked like the guy at back of van was unable to unlock and open the second rear door. So they dragged a safe out of a premises but lacked a plan to take it?
It goes back WAAYYY longer than that. We lived there in the 1970s and though in some ways it arguably wasn't this bad, in some ways it was arguably worse.
In 2021, Oakland defunded their police department by over 17 million dollars. I wonder how much money in business and property taxes they've lost since then.
I give kudos for In N Out closing completely. It's the safest way to protect people. Taco Bell put money before safety. Closing the dining room isn't enough.
Yes, it is the fault of our politicians and authorities. But what can one say when even the loosest of laws says anything under 900 is a slap on the wrist, plenty of these thefts are well over a thousand. (FYI, a theft is a theft regardless of dollar amount.) Because even under the relaxed laws, these crimes don't meet the criteria. At this point, it's not the laws but just poor judges and lazy cops.
