FWIW - I completely agree with your assessment of the other 3 varieties. Sungold and Supersweet are good, Sunsugar is close but not quite as good. Black Cherry (for me), blows them away...It tastes absolutely amazing when it is perfectly ripe. I agree with the previous comment about stone fruits - they are almost like a plum! However if not ripe, they are pretty blah. The color of yours and your comment about the core, makes me think that they were not yet ripe enough. The core goes away once they are ripe enough... I pick mine at about the same color as yours and then leave them on the counter for up to a week. You will get a sense of when they are ready. They are by far and away my favorite cherry. (BTW - Try Jaune Flamme - a big sized sungold with more acidity - yum!)

For what it’s worth, and I’m not into acidic tomatoes, the Black Cherry improves over the season. The first few fruits of my plants are always a little blah. Once the heat cranks up it goes crazy and there is a bit more of an acid/sweet balance. I’m zone 8a-8b piedmont SC.

Totally agree... My last Black Cherries are always the best tasting. But I find that with a number of heirlooms. The hybrids tend to be more consistent in flavour, but the heirlooms can go anywhere from blah to mind-blowing, depending on conditions.

I almost didn’t watch this episode because I couldn’t imagine being convinced of the best tasting cherry tomatoes by watching you eat them. Boy am I glad I watched! Your face expressed what I couldn’t taste (if that makes sense). And what you conveyed in words, about each tomato, was also very clear and convincing. Thanks for the recommendations.

I planted 2 Super Sweet 100, also! They produced 100's of tomatoes! I love them and everyone I shared with was asking for more! My problem was the stink bugs also loved them, and were so bad that i ended up pulling them up after Spring and didn't get to enjoy them over Summer! I tried several things to treat the stink bugs, but couldn't get rid of them! 😢 I'll definitely plant again!

I decided to grow Sun Gold and Super Sweet 100 for the 1st time this year, based on everyone's suggestions. I haven't eaten either variety before. I finally got a ripe Sun Gold yesterday and I wasn't quite prepared for the flavor. It was like a punch of awesome to the taste buds! If I can get enough ripe at the same time, I think they'll make a kick ass salsa! I can't wait for the Super Sweets to ripen, so I can compare them.

I also grew all 4 of these varieties this year. I will fully agree with your assessment of each. Each one stands on its own. Each are delious. Because I live in central FL I prefer to grow varieties that develope quickly (cherry and mid size) due to heat, humidity, rain and diseases. I start my tomatoes early fall and am usually finished by end of May.

I think tasting the black cherry last was a mistake, also not drinking water in between them all was. Black cherry isn't as strong as a flavor but it has more complexity, it has the taste of a stone fruit. It doesn't taste as good directly after a sweeter tomato though which messes up your palate.

SunSugar is a very good tomato, and if you just casually pick them off the plant, they seem very similar. However, when you actually eat them side-by-side, they aren't even close to the same. The Sun Gold is a much stronger tasting tomato. SunSugar is much milder. I love the face-punching flavor of Sun Gold.

I'm in a colder climate than you so it will be awhile before I can try them, but they were bred from Black Cherry & are supposed to have better growth habit & have better flavor. This is the first year I'm not growing Sungold but I gave a seedling to my Mom so hopefully she'll have a few extras. I always find new ones to try don't have room for them all! The other cherry tomatoes that I'm trying out is Black Strawberry, Garnet, & a couple of patio tomatoes in containers.

I grow 100's every year, solid flavor and prolific producers. I have alternated Sunsugar and sungold the past 3 years and while the sun sugar are really good I agree the Sungold are a cut above them and the 100's flavor wise. But my favorite cherries are the Baby Boomer hybrid determinates. They are sweeter than the 100's and for determinates they put out a ton of tomatoes

And I like the Black Cherry tomato when fully ripe. Straight up their yummy. Cut one in half and a couple drops of a good quality Balsamic Vinegar and holy moly. Stuff them in quart jars and can them...wow. They hold their shape well after canning. Their a great little tomato.

I will say Sun Sugar has improved throughout the season. It still doesn’t quite have the punch of Sun Gold, but it is more productive and doesn’t split. Black Cherry, so far, has been disappointing. The flavor isn’t there, and it totally lacks disease resistance. The plant is on its way out, where Sun Gold, Sun Sugar and Super Sweet 100 continue to produce. I’ll likely replace Black Cherry with a hybrid next season.

So interesting. The only cherries I ever grow are sungold and black cherry. Your black cherries were not quite ripe. They have to stay on the vine until absolutely no green shoulders and get very very dark purple. Sungold is consistently better but a perfectly ripe black cherry will rock your world. You’ll know it when you eat one that is perfectly ripe. Thanks for sharing

I thought the black cherry wasn't quite ripe either, I also wonder if the sungold could be a bit oranger and then it's sweeter as well. I always grow sungolds, didn't remember to save seeds from the black cherry so didn't grow them again, I found them to take soooo long to ripen! I dry all my tomatoes and sungolds are just perfect for that!

I agree. Having both sun gold and sun sweet. They should be quite orange when ripe. And ditto in the black cherry. First time I grew them it took me quite a while to learn when they are truly ripe. You are right. They need to be very dark. No green. Patience is needed as they take longer to ripen.

Northern Ohio here, I've been growing Sweet 100's for 20 years and all my neighbors love them, tough plant and an excellent producer. A couple years ago you talked about Sun Gold, I could never find them anywhere. This year my local home improvement store has Sun Sugar so I took a chance. Soglad I did, wonderful flavor sweet and tasty, another neighbor favorite. Also grew Brandywine Red for the first time. This will also be one that I grow every year. What fun taste comparisons ~ they all look wonderful! And the later Sun Sugar means you can stagger your harvest a bit. Will look out for Sun Golds again this year, as I adored the flavor after picking a plant clean at Lowes last year while shopping. A Black Cherry too - oh, yum! 🤭 (Yes. I bought the plants :) (Husky cherry tomato fan as well, but they've been a little difficult to find the past two years. They're not overly sweet but they do have a full rich tomato flavor that's nice for snacking off the vine.)

OKay I planted my mom a couple Sun gold's last year in hot dry southwest Oklahoma. We usually have trouble growing tomatoes from middle of June until the middle of September because our temps get to high to pollinate. Her sun gold's did great all summer and 84 year old gardener said that Sun gold is the best tasting most prolific tomato she has ever had. I would go visit her and she would always have a basket full on her table snacking on them. I'm glad to hear your take. I have had Sunsugar on many occasions. I will tell you that some starts produced varying degrees of flavor. Some were good while others were nasty. I would think some nurseries secretly try to save the hybrid seeds and pass them as true Sunsugar. I have even know some nurseries to save seeds from openly pollinated fruits that were among mass differing varieties on tables. You never know for certain what a variety will taste like given parent plants and growing conditions.

In years past I've grown both Sun Gold and Black Cherry. Sun Gold produces LOTS more fruit and it's hard to keep up with picking them. It's a really tasty cherry tomato but is thin-skinned. The skin cracks very quickly so you need to be aware of that. It also sheds and drops both ripe and green fruit as the weather cools in Fall. Black cherry has a thicker skin and is more crack-resistant. It's tasty and has a complex flavor. This year I'm growing Super Sweet 100 for the first time. It's a vigorous grower and already has fruit but none to pick yet. Looking forward...

Thanks, I am definitely going to grow Sun gold this year. I have heard about them for years, but I haven't been able to have a garden the past couple of years, and I generally grow only heirlooms, so I have never tried the Sun Gold. But being that I live in the same region of the country as you do, in the SouthEastern U.S., I live in Georgia, I have struggled in the past with the heat and humidity causing pest and disease problems with my tomatoes. So I have decided to add a few of the really good F1's in my tomato line up this year to insure that I have a good enough yield to be able to preserve some of my harvest. In years past, depending on the weather, my tomato harvest has been patchy at best when growing all heirloom varieties. And I think we all know that almost anything could happen this year, especially being that it is a Presidential election year, and with all the chaos in the country. And I think we should all be trying to grow and preserve as much food as we possibly can.

If you're interested in yellow tomatoes, you might want to try growing Wapsipinicon Peach toms, which (as i understand it) are named after the Wapsipinicon river in Georgia, where they originate. They are a "saladette"-size tom, which are pretty-much exactly the same size range as your Black Cherry toms there. They're named Wapsipinicon PEACH because they're covered in fuzz, just like a peach. (It's super-easy to rub or brush off.) They're fun to grow and fun to show off and I liked them in salads or just sliced in half with sea-salt or garlic-salt. When fully mature the toms are a lovely yellow with a pink-to-orange blush, like they're shy or embarrassed or just awkward. Fun. They're also an heirloom. Interestingly, I've got a packet of black cherry seeds waiting for me... it may be time to go ahead 'n plant some of those now. ONE THING that I like to do is go to my local grocery and buy heirloom tomatoes, take them home and try them. If I love them, then I save the seeds and plant them in my garden. Easy-peasy.... and costs WAY less than buying a packet of seeds. This year I'm trying that with Trader Joe's tomatoes-on-the-vine but I don't know if they are heirlooms... so IDK what I'll get. Knock on wood.

I grew Sungold this spring. I won’t grow them again, their skins were too tough. Wish you had mentioned the skin thickness. I’m in Florida though, so maybe the more intense heat and humidity here makes the skins tougher, I don’t know. My favorite is the Cream Sausage tomatoes. Not sure if they’re considered a true cherry tomato since they’re oblong. Great sweet flavor and thin skins.

so cool, I had sun gold and black cherry last year, black cherry are very mild, sun gold, which I normally grow every year, are phenomenal, I gave some to a friend and they blew his mind...unfortunately I couldn't find sun gold this year, so I planted 9 (yes 9) different varieties, mostly 'rare' heirloom, things like orange currant, champagne bubbles, white cherry, one called gobstopper, and others, we'll see how it goes (missing me some sun gold!)

I'm growing Black Cherry, dwarf Eagle Smiley, Prescott Cherry, Sunsugar, and Kiss the Sky cherry tomatoes. I've tried all of them except for Kiss the Sky, which has yet to ripen. Sun Sugar is a big disappointment, and it's too bad I didn't grow Sungold instead but didn't because of it being prone to cracks. I might try Sungold next year. Black Cherry is our favorite with Prescott Cherry second. Eagle Smiley and Sunsugar are rather small in size and not very sweet, so they won't be grown again in our garden. We like dark tomatoes, and Black Cherry has similar flavor, but we'd still like to find a Black Krim tasting cherry tomato. Cheers!

I, too, have been a huge fan of Super Sweet 100"s. I planted Sun Golds this year and they are already on my favorites list! One of my concerns when choosing cherry tomatoes is the toughness of the skins. I realize that probably helps to keep them from splitting, but I enjoy them when they're easier to eat. So do my grandchildren. 😉 Any suggestions?

We grew Black Cherry last year and really liked the larger size of the Black Cherry. So this year we looked for bigger cherry tomatoes. We’ve grown Super sweet 100 and it is a good regular cherry. So we are growing Honeycomb, Sparky and Black Cherry.

I wait all year for this. I'm finally at the point now where I have something to look forward to every season. I look forward to spring for starting the garden, early summer for tomatoes, late summer for figs, fall for feijoa and persimmons, and winter for citrus. If you grow enough stuff, there is always something to look forward to.

I have finally broken down and bought the famed Sungold and SuperSweet F1 hybrids this year to see all of the hype! I've always loved and grown the Black Cherry and loved it! It's always a slow one for me with the ripening, especially when we have a cool wet summer like last year! I've always also liked the yellow pear and gold nugget heirlooms that are supposed to be the most comparable in flavor to the Sungolds.

I grew Black Cherry last year and wasn't a huge fan. I also like a more acidic tomato. I always grow the Juliet tomatoes. Not sure if they're considered a true cherry or a small roma as they are fairly large for a cherry type. They're super productive, can take the heat pretty well. I "think" I have a Super Sweet 100 out there this year lol. I picked up the plant at a local nursery but it's honestly SOOOO hot out today, I don't wanna get back out there to check the tag right now lol.

I've grown Sun Gold for five years and it is my favorite cherry tomato. It does tend to split if you don't pick them quickly after they ripen. This year I'm growing Black Strawberry cherry tomato from Baker Seeds, can't wait to try them. I wan to grow Super Sweet 100 next year, a lot of RU-vid gardeners rave about it.

This is insane to me. I never paid attention to different types of tomatoes but I accidentally bought different cherry tomatoes today and I was preparing them along with some I already had and always get. The flavors were so different from each other I was stunned! I think I got the Sweet 100s. They’re called flavor bomb cherry tomatoes and I got them from whole foods. Now I want to grow my own and I’m still very new to gardening too.

This year we had Supersweet 100, Crispino, Black Cherry, Zuckertraube. All of them are very tasty but Zuckertraube was my favorite in flavor and Crispino the one of my girlfiend. Both were sweeter than Supersweet 100 but y didn't like the hard skin of Crispino. Next year y will try Sub Gold too, the seeds are waiting for their day... Black Cherry is different and absolutely a must grow. When i get tired of picking the very small Supersweet i'm glad to pick Black Cherry and it's very tasty, too. I think i will test some more cherrytomato but the four from last year need there place in the garden ti he sure to have a good crop of cherrytomato.

Yall should watch Oklahoma weather, though, in the late winter/spring months. I had places I would watch in Colorado, to know what we were gonna get living there on Greenhorn Mountain. And I noticed there that the area in Colorado I lived in sent SO much weather to Oklahoma, we would warn our boss that lived in Oklahoma, cause they have COWS. NOW I live here in Oklahoma again, I got a heads up. A degree in journalism goes a LONG way
