I honestly would love to see a part two, where the team looks at 2D and/or 3D artists, and software developers of various trades. Maybe thrown in a mathematician with large data set projects to spice things up
@gonnabestupidbutactuallyno8295
@gonnabestupidbutactuallyno8295 2 года назад
Well, the problem is that 2D artists don't need that amount of power, and as for 3D, currently most of the software is not optimised. Like, if I'm not mistaken Blender, for example, still can't use natively GPU cores. And while not everyone uses blender, probably it's really common problem there Edit: ok, it supports it now.
@nukularpictures
@nukularpictures 2 года назад
Well at least for deep learning its not as good as something with an RTX 3070 or RTX 3080. Just does not support features like special data formats as NVidia is using. For 3D: Honestly the software is the limitation. Autodesk Inventor does not have a MacOS version. Neither does CATIA or SolidWorks. So the big 3 are not running under MAC. What do you want to test there? There is no professional software available for MacOS. The closest things is Fusion 360 but honestly that just does not compare to Inventor or SolidWorks. For artists the only professional option I know is Maya. That you might be able to test.

Little tip for Viiola: you can get Reason+ and it will work as a VST inside Ableton. It has all the same nice patching and wiring and sound workflow but with the editing capabilities of Ableton. I personally liked the way Reason sounded and was in a league of its own in terms of sound design, but in terms of arrangement and timeline it is a nightmare if you ask me compared to Ableton which yeah, it's a bit weird and has its own logic, but at the same time once you get the workflow it is second to none. So yeah, Reason+ for sound design/composing and Ableton as a backbone/arrangement only

The audio latency part is highly dependent on what audio interface you're using. With RME audio interfaces you can achieve 64 samples (5ms round trip) without pops or stutters on a mid to high tier PC or Mac. Even with low end Focusrite interfaces you can achieve sub 10ms round trip with good performance using their AISO driver. His problem comes from using the built-in audio system, I'm a bit floored that any musician would do this.
@penisdubs
@penisdubs 2 года назад
the inbuilt drivers in macos are most compatible with other apps, i haven't used an asio soundcard with macos yet but on windows it would immediately botch all other applications from using audio though yeah i agree if latency is something you're worried about and you're doing a bunch of recording (both audio and midi) i dont get why you'd use the standard coreaudio driver
@gabrielcomidi
@gabrielcomidi 2 года назад
Asio is a windows driver not a mac driver, Macos uses Audio Core driver which is a native Apple driver compatible with pro Audio interfaces and the built in interface. With Logic, I never had any issues even on my biggest projects. There are a lot of factors that might affect the way the DAW behave.
@KyleMahaney
@KyleMahaney 2 года назад
It can be but he had a ton of vst's and vsti's loaded, he was maxing DSP which in a purely CPU environment means CPU resources, this wasn't a matter of the interface not keeping up. The lower the buffer size, the faster all those software instruments and effects have to deliver the goods.. running probably all of them through Rosetta can very quickly mean problems.

@@penisdubs Yeah it really depends on the interface, I know with my Focusrite interferfaces of my past when using AISO the application would hog the entire soundcard. With RME interfaces all ins / outs can be used in multiple applications at once even with multiple applications pulling ASIO and MME at the same time on Windows. RME interfaces extract a heavy toll, however 🤑

Hey Jonathan! First off, I always enjoy the visual quality of Mac Address videos. Second, and the reason I'm commenting, is that the audio issues that Andrew was having MAY (and I'm including that caveat because of my limited experience) come down to the interface he's using (assuming he's using an external interface, anyway). IT may not be powerful enough to handle the processing of the smaller sample sizes. I've found output capability differences between different tier interfaces that I've used, so... maybe he's having the same problem.
@mrGood-84
@mrGood-84 2 года назад
Any audio interface (including built in one) runs through CoreAudio so that’s not the reason. (I’m not saying there’s no difference between interfaces in that manner but it’s negligible)
@nicholasbinder5593
@nicholasbinder5593 2 года назад
@@mrGood-84 That's true if they are class compliant. Otherwise, the way Interfaces will perform at different buffer sizes can still come down to their drivers. We've tested Cubase Pro 11 under Rosetta on an M1 Mac Mini, and while a song with about 50 tracks ran stutter-free on a Focusrite Saffire 6i6, we've had terrible performance with a UA Apollo Twin X. @@ezronthelegend I provisionally disagree, because look at what it’s replacing in its price range: the Intel chips that came before it also made lofty promises and underdelivered (given what you’re paying for), so at the base M1 level, the chips are great. The Pro/Max/Ultra levels however, are a different story. They are priced to compete with hybrid systems (read: those with a discrete GPU), yet their price-to-performance is pretty lousy. TBF to Apple, the first-gen Intel lineup by-and-large didn’t set the world on fire either, and the same applies to the chips used in their early iPhones and iPads, so while the M1 is a solid start, I’d probably wait until the M2X or M3X before getting a higher-end product.

Personally I went from a 2015 MacBook Pro, fully loaded, to an MacBook Air M1, and while everything native was incredibly fast, performance on older x86 apps, in most cases, felt about the same or slightly more responsive. I guess that translation layer needs some help with the more complex multimedia apps. I use MOTU audio interfaces for music recording, and they're usually one macOS version behind with their drivers (as are many DAW manufacturers). Sure, the existing drivers *usually* work with the latest macOS, but isn't worth attempting an OS upgrade right away just in case it has to be downgraded again. That's not even addressing the Apple Silicon architecture change. It took until late 2021 before most of MOTU's line-up was supported on M1. And it's looking like legacy hardware will never be supported on it. For digital audio, low latency operation is paramount and developing new drivers always has the manufacturers playing catch-up whenever there's a major OS or architecture change.

Just a note about audio work: Just like Viiola Bloom, i upgraded from a mid 2014 15" MBP (shares same everything with the 2015 model except graphics and ssd) to a M1 Pro. But my daw of choice is Ableton, which is now M1 optimized. At first, just by watching the app's cpu meter, I didn't notice any significant benefit, but then, opening the same, huuge project, I noticed that the old mac just couldn't even playback, while the M1 was flying. One really absurd thing is that with the M1 you get lower CPU usage by reducing buffer size! That is nonsense crazy. It may be a CPU meter error, but anyways I can now use ridicolous buffer sizes like 64, with almost no latencies, and basically do almost whatever I want without caring about performance issues and without fans spinning all the time.
@eddielucitt
@eddielucitt 2 года назад
I think the biggest issue with this video is that it failed to explain optimization within a DAW. There are many things that can be done to reduce latency such as bouncing down VSTis to audio tracks etc. If this person was using Logic or Studio One I'm sure the results would have been way more in his favor.
@frammenzio
@frammenzio 2 года назад
@@eddielucitt yes they just briefly said that they were using an old, not-m1-native version of Reason, but they didn’t had a chance to show how a native daw performs. Another, not mentioned, important thing to keep in mind when upgrading to Apple Silicon is the audio interface compatibility, especially if you’re using relatively old devices: atm there are just a few that can deliver full functionality and drivers. Many will work, but with class-compliant drivers (that could mean less routings/less i-o/less samplerates & bit depths available). It may not be a problem for many, but for who has relatively old hardware (audio interfaces don’t get obsolete as quickly as many other devices) could mean also a gear update. In my case, i had to keep my old mac running to use an old firewire interface (fw is no longer compatible with M1) that I can’t ditch because i love the sound of those specific preamps for some applications.
@kaitlyn__L
@kaitlyn__L Год назад
@@frammenzio I’m curious if you looked into a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter? A lot of them use the TB1 and TB2 connector AKA miniDP and would need a further adapter to USB-C, but one of the selling points when Apple first added Thunderbolt a little over a decade ago was high FW800 compatibility. That said, I’m looking to upgrade but will be keeping my 2012 i7 around anyway for 32-bit plug-ins and may want to route audio through it via optical almost like a big guitar pedal, so I can definitely understand keeping the old machine around for some purposes no matter what!
@frammenzio
@frammenzio Год назад
@@kaitlyn__L I already have a fw adapter, but with the new Apple Silicon architecture they completely ditched fw protocol. So it's not just a connector problem, fw devices simply can no longer communicate with the latest macs. That fw800->thunderbolt->usbc method works only till the latest intel macs. So, keeping "oldware" is the way to go, as always!

I would love to hear an update from Reason > Ableton dude. Been using Ableton 11.1 with M1 support and have found it surprisingly snappy - most products shouldn't be bought on a promise of future updates, but Apple's massive fan base and motivated/resource-abled developers are already making the switch. This is still a transition period, but I suspect app support will be better. Sample use case: I load Ableton 11.1, buffer size is 2048 samples with 96,000 in/out sample rate (the highest settings in ableton), and input latency is 21.3 ms / 25.1ms output (46.4 ms overall, not the best, but very impressive and fast enough for me to record). M1 MBA. I can reduce buffer size to 1024 samples, and the overall latency drops to 25.1ms I am wondering if M1 Pro or M1 Max performance on the Pros is so much different from the fan-less MBA. Especially since Ableton made the switch and this is now optimized software that requires a lot of real-time processing

There are still some plug-in companies that are lagging behind, but for the most part everything runs fine. So that’s the only performance hiccup I’ve run into.

I took a leap of faith with a base M1 16gb macbook air for drafting logic sessions on the go and well, If you use logic don't worry about it-just so long as you can get your plug ins working well. I push my air to its knees but I'm also starting to challenge my main 12 core 2010/2012 Mac Pro so take from that what you will Only complaint is sometimes getting arm to play nice with specific plug ins can be a paaain-though I have yet to ever fail to get something to work and I've never had performance issues, like Andrew did, only ever quality of life ones (like plug ins needing to be reset/reloaded if the macbook goes to sleep-specifically many of spitfires plugins) So unless you know your plug ins will be problematic, you should feel safe making the switch so long as youre braced for maybe a hiccup here and there as everyone gets used to the new architecture-which has honestly gone incredibly smoothly all things considered When the time comes to finally retire the old mac pro I'll definitely be confidently buying apple silicon again ;) (P.S. I largely work with MIDI and sample libraries and haven't used my macbook for studio recording yet-but I haven't heard of anyone else having issues. Noise, power draw, and portability. If you’re getting 70% of the performance of a huge, power hungry desktop in a package you can throw in a backpack and take with you, and operate at full speed on BATTERY power for 5-8 hours with no need to be near an outlet.. that could be game changing for people who work from home or travel. The "real world" rarely involves content creation. The youtube response to M1 pro/max has been universally focused on that. To a hammer, everything is a nail and to a youtuber the only function of a high end laptop is making a youtube video/song/image. Ya know what, Apple knows that and its focus is slowly moving away from anything but how many HEVC streams it can decode at a time. I'm a business owner and software dev. Not once have I used my MBP M1 Max for content creation and I feel like I'm not alone. I bought it based on gut and a positive experience with previous macbooks, would be nice if I got a review that focused on the "real world" I and many others experience

Agreed! It's honestly quite frustrating that so few people even mention MBP... or any computer for that matter, in context of anything outside content creation. Which, while useful to know for the sake of benchmarks, should really stop getting neglected.

In their defense they’re focusing on tasks that require the processing power of the highest end MBP. Besides content creation there isn’t much else that truthfully requires 32 gpu cores. Even software development and in my case CAD software can quite easily run on the lowest end of the MBP models. So for them to make a RU-vid video titled “can a $4000 MBP max run my excel spreadsheet and compile some code” would be ridiculous. So of course they’re going to focus on the tasks that realistically DO require that power. I actually think it’s very beneficial to consumers of them to emphasize how much you don’t need an M1 max

What use is that? You can't game on a Mac, so why else would you need a pro machine? it is really good laptop to browse the web and watch RU-vid on. My only complaint about MacBook Pro is that it is not one of the best machines for Blender. Anything else you want to create, you can. I will edit a future length movie on this machine and I am pretty sure that I will not run into any problems (as long as I don't have to do light clean up on after effects which is not optimized).

@@ishaukthedoc5686 How is it ridiculous? How long it takes to execute a SQL query or how many JSON docs a second it can process is extremely important to me. I need at least 32GB of ram to start up a JBOSS server and MongoDB on my local dev environment. How about creating Tableau extracts? Or moving files to an SD so I can configure a pi VPN server deployment? What about 2 Windows VMs each with multiple cores and four displays so I can monitor all of the servers in a cluster? Just cause you and RU-vidrs can't think of anything but Da Vinci resolve and blender, doesn't mean it doesn't have a use case in a professional environment

I am an Apple hater, I can't stand their company, ethics, or fan-boys. It still stings me to see such fantastic hardware just being wasted. The price might be wrong, but this is some impressive engineering. Also, Mac Address is wonderful.

It’s ironic because Samsung is just as big a tyrant (if not bigger) in South Korea as Apple is in the US. Really any company is the same wherever capitalism reigns. I think you’re just hating a company for the sake of hating them. Pointing out “fan-boys” as a reason is kind of… infantile?
