We took a Pontiac Trans Am Turbo (20th Anniversary Edition) to get some lunch!

Thanks for watching! This Trans Am Turbo was a blast from the past, and an unexpected emotional experience to drive. Driving a car like this in the modern era is a nostalgic head turner that you can't help but smile at. This one specifically is beautifully maintained, and illustrates what one of these would've been like brand new.
You'll notice this is a bit more of a casual video. We did not have access to the car for very long, but we were told we could drive it to lunch and back. We hope you enjoyed the more casual style, and let us know in the comments if you want to see more (or less) videos like this.
Leave any feedback or cars you’d like to see in the comments below. We've got a lot of exciting cars lined up for future videos, so consider subscribing!
Corrections:
We said the engine is shared with both the Buick GNX and the GMC Cyclone, however the Cyclone has a 4.3L engine, not 3.8L.

FOR SURE! And they also need to learn correct information before spouting off nonsense like, loose steering on a technologically advanced(for its time) WS-6 car with 4 wheel disk and racing suspension from the factory! I had a 81 Turbo Transam and its Ancient WS-6 could run circles around half the modern cars, how do you think these same modern cars would do against this lighter, faster nimbler Version of the F-Body??? yup! it would be easy kills unless someone shows up with an OMNI -GLHS with even better handling! Which probably very few here have heard of it before GOOGLING it then answering here! smh

For every atmosphere of boost (14.7psi), in theory the engine displacement doubles-- 7.6 liters or about 464ci for that compact 3.8. By the way that 8-18 volt gauge is the battery; boost is 0-20psi gauge...
@michaelruszkowski1207
@michaelruszkowski1207 2 месяца назад
I run 20+ psi via chip adjustments on my 87 GN. But Richmond 3.73 gears mounted to a Auburn Pro Posi carrier allows for more boost than the stock 3.54 clutch unit. With Air Lift air bags and Kenne Bell pinion snubber plants the 255x15 Goodyear GTs Well. GrandNationalMike

From the sources we are looking at (and even the ones we just double checked) say the motor is a 3.8 liter in the GNX. The Cyclone does appear to have the 4.3 liter engine though. We’ll add that correction to the description. We really appreciate you keeping us honest, thanks!
@GrandCamino6
@GrandCamino6 11 месяцев назад
Only the prototype Syclone had the Buick turbo 3.8L SFI motor. They used a 4.3L with a Mitsubishi turbo and a liquid intercooler set up instead of the air to air intercooler in the GN. Anyway, I absolutely love the TTA. They could be had for less than a GN in the early to mid 90’s. I missed a chance at getting a near mint one with 38k miles for $8,000 in 1994. I ended up picking up an 87 GN with T-tops for $10,500 in 1995 instead. The prices are nuts now. I am happy to see that they have appreciated but also bummed too lol Great video guys 😎👍🏼

I help build these at C-P-C Van Nuys. I got to drive one in the PMT yard out back. So sad because it was detuned, to be sent off for final tune I believe the same location that did the convertible top installs. I had asked people on the line who bought new ones, meaning GTA's with the same steering wheel controls for the stereo. They said even their kids couldn't break them. It just looked wonky even then. The Recaro seats were the best installed at that time. The Camaro seats couldn't compare, even in the Z28. Yes, your car is truly special. I hope you take it out and get some enjoyment driving and keep the fluids moving. It keeps em healthy, and the seals will not dry rot out. I drove GTA's and Camaro Z28's out back but the GTA's in my option were better. Even if they came off the same line due to the design differences. I really felt old knowing these guys weren't even born when these cars were built. But glad to see they were enjoying themselves. CHEERS

I remember when those 1989 Turbo V6 T/As came out. A friend of my cousin had a brand new one (late spring or early summer 1989) and that car was incredibly quick for the time. It was so badass! I think they were all actually indy pace cars, but the pace car decals came inside the car and not factory installed. At least thats how the one in my story came. So it was a dealer or self install feature. Forgive me if that is incorrect, but that is my memory of it from 35 years ago. They would usually run mid to high 13s or very low 14s (typically with a young inexperienced driver) at the local drag strip in stock form. I remember one magazine supposedly getting 13.40s out of their test car, but it may have been tweaked. Remember, this is at a time when a mid 14 second car was considered a quick car. I remember the new Mustang LX/GTs and 350 5.7l Z28/Trans Ams running low 15s in stock trim. I know the Buick GNs were fast too, but the Turbo Trans Am was more of a sleeper! I had a 1972 Corvette small block 4 speed back then, and it ran pretty consistent 13.30-13.40 quarter mile times on the motor. I still had many a turbo buick on stock appearing tires have my lunch! Those were the salad days man........ But anyway, the 89 turbo T/A pace cars were beasts!

Oh guys 🔥🔥🔥🔥! My first car was a 1974 Formula 400 Firebird in LimeFire Green. I was 18 and walked into the Pontiac dealer in Queens NYC, it was in the center of the showroom floor. OMG, I wanted a red Firebird but my heart was smitten. It had a white Esprit interior with green trim, yeah a green dashboard, carpet, etc. it worked in that time and looked amazing. I don’t have many pictures and what I have I can’t find so I used Google and found a perfect example. No pix here though. The reason for so few pix was my phone didn’t have a camera back then. Matter of fact it was on the wall in the kitchen with a 25’ cord from the handset and a rotary dial. Cameras came later, LOL. I kept it 7 years and drove it cross country when I moved to Los Angeles where I still am. I miss it so much but storing cars wasn’t a thing back then. I miss it greatly. Can you imagine a 6.5L V8 like it was nothing special. Biggest car engine I ever had. Bit today I have the fastest car I’ve ever had and it only has a 3.3L V6 but it’s got two of those turbo thingamabobs. Yeeha! Keep doing these great videos! Oh and when you take it or others to C&C get more reactions from folks who will let you video them. That would add another dimension to the video. Joe

Pre 90’s cars will still be able to be driven 30 years from now. Especially cars from the 60 and 70’s. Todays cars will not because they will be unrepairable. Pontiac T/A's were known for their great handling and yet this guy says it floats.? And he's scared to turn the wheel. If your going to review cars for your RU-vid video, you might want to take an aggressive driving course, to actually learn how to drive instead of letting the car drive you.! Oh, and it's not originally depicted as a screaming chicken, it's a Phoenix. But, as bold as it was, people made fun of it and screaming chicken was a humorous pun.

There shouldn’t be any play or “middle vagueness” in the steering. I have an 89 GTA & the mechanic adjusted the “backlash” on it & there’s no play at all.

Senior year of HS... a white 1977 Trans Am, loaded with T Tops and a 400! and... and a brand new Honda CB750f cafe racer! l'm sure these two have no clue how American Muscle often aided a young man's right of passage?... and... were often directly responsible for Generation X ‐ without whom, video game playing Millennials would never be here?? When's the last time a vid game did that?

It's an absolutely beautiful car! That said, the guy(Evan?) In the Red Shirt commentary was unacceptably rude, disrespectful, and condescending! I have Pontiac Firebird SE from 1986 and know exactly how it feels to drive. It's nothing like he described. I have no problem with the other host, but due the snide and overt display of ignorance of the Red Shirt. Two Thumbs Down!👎👎👎👎😠

Big car ? A 1977 T Bird is a big car, these cars are not big and they take corners like your on rails. You have never driven a big car obviously.
