As a tradesman I wouldn’t buy anything but Makita, In 35 years they have never let me down and I have worked these tool hard.

Jamie, nobody has ever told you about teredoworms ? Look at the early video's of sailing Yaba . A wooden schooner in Brazil After 3 years rebuilding they will soon splash. Tip : find a shipwright with a chisel and a block of purple❤

I had to look teredo worms up! I still don't understand how it's possible to get to that piece of teak though. It is encapsulated in fibreglass, filler, epoxy and paint. None of it is exposed 🤔

Oh no tool wars!! I use Makita every day for work and in my experience they are top quality, and very reliable. Certainly worth the extra cash. Good job getting the rudder off, that looked painful :)

BUT the other reason it's so hard to remove is because your rudder is putting angled pressure on the downward force. Thats a weight of 0 and 80 degrees forced on one side from the rudder putting pressure on the pin. Suggestion. relive the weight of the rudder, (prop it up) slowly decline the weight as the assembly drops.

We tried that early on. Actually, there's quite a bit we didn't get on camera, like the failed attempt to use a heat gun due to the yard's poor wiring. Turns out the heat wasn't hot enough.

A decentish sander should have a flat plate with little spikes on. this is for puncturing the sanding sheet once it is installed so that it can suck dust out from under the sander. you get additives to make exposcy and polyester more sandable... the latter uses a wax based one.. We made paper weights casting in that cap of a spray can as a school project in 6th grade... mine had watch parts inside

@williambunting803 3 месяца назад
Until that came apart it was difficult to see this weird construction. While you have it apart in might be an idea to drill for M25 and tap the holes so you can use one or two bolts to pull the casting down off the skep. It is an oversight that they did not have made provision for that.

We considered doing this but honestly, this was all down to that epoxy.

That looked like a total nightmare. Is there anything you can do just on the off chance that dam thing needs to come off again. Because if you need to no beer left for me. HAHAHA

We could not use epoxy, or be more conservative when reapplying it 🤔

Can also hit resin with a heat gun to remove bubbles. They do that with poured table tops.

It's a good idea but there's nowhere to get purchase from both sides as the skeg is made of fibreglass.

Hi guys! Congrats. For next project - I wonder if a heat gun would help with bubbles like they use on epoxy tabletops….perhaps this only works on certain epoxy formulas??
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 3 месяца назад
For this project it didn't matter but it has been mentioned a few times and is worth bearing in mind for my next tabletop project 😉 I think those wood turners use polyester resin, not sure if that makes a difference?

I have a vacuum pump for doing resin pieces ( scales mostly ) but an idea I've had may get some bubbles out is to use a strong enough container that won't collapse and a hoover, never tried it but who knows it might just work ?
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 3 месяца назад
Good tip, Brian, although when you see this piece in its final resting place the bubbles will never be seen again 😅
@pmnfernando

use a heat gun or a small blow torch to pop the bubbles
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 3 месяца назад
It's a good tip but honestly, this time it's not needed. This piece of teak will be buried inches deep in glass and filler!
