We Tried the AVERAGE AMERICAN DIET, Here's What Happened
Fast Food, Big Food, Cheap Food. Just what IS the average American diet? As the United States is a big country there's many potential answers, but today we'll be grabbing some of the most popular grocery store items (foods we also ate frequently growing up) and seeing how exactly we feel and also examining what exactly IS in the diet we're consuming.

I would honestly eat healthy even if I could eat junk food all day without any health issues - healthy food just _feels_ better, and doesn't make me feel like a living garbage can, and it's also damn delicious if you know what you are doing - like for example chicken in piri-piri sauce combined with avocados, and then strawberries for dessert. Beats all junk food in the world in every way.

As an Asian, what shocked me the most is finding out that a lot of American don’t drink water; the drink soda. So. Mind. Blown. In my country soda is more like occasional treats and definitely not substitute for water, heck we even drink more water afterwards if we do drink soda. When I visited America, I was in awe of their selection of sodas and snacks, though lots of them were just too sweet for my palate. Somehow being grateful that living in second world country means that we have access to fresh food more than the heavily processed one in America; fresh food is cheaper than processed one too.

Dangerous....? Iono, but definitely unhealthy. If they ate it for a month, they wouldn't die, or be close to dying. They would have gained a lot of weight for sure, and the cravings for the sugar would be long lasting even after a month. I actually think (or hope) it will be the opposite. Often overeating is a vicious cycle of hating yourself and using food to numb emotions. So if one starts loving themselves that might stop. AND generally speaking, a person that loves their body for what it can do, would want to give it good fuel. This is also what I've seen from the body positivity movement: "treat your body well because it's worthy of love". That means healthy eating etc.

Whats funny about this actually you can eat a medium (thats 32 CM diameter in my country) pizza without getting overly fat. You have to keep in mind it contains 1200-1600 calories though, so you have to adjust your other meals. Fat loss is ultimately calories in < calories out. So if you have oats in the morning, a medium pizza at lunch and some tuna and veggies at the evening you can stay in calorie deficit without being really hungry. Sure macros and less processed whole foods help a lot (mainly through their bigger volume and lower nutrition density), but you can absolutely can loose weight eating unhealthy if you control your portions.

As someone from an inner city in the US, it wasn’t until I met my husband that I realized how horribly my parents fed my brother and I growing up. We never went hungry and I am extremely grateful to have been so blessed, but my parents both grew up in the projects and were very poor before making it out. They ate a lot of unhealthy foods because that’s what they could afford. We didn’t struggle whatsoever when I was young, but my parents continued to eat and feed us I the way they were used to eating their whole lives. I ate SO MUCH sugar and MSG/powdered seasonings (rather than fresh vegetables and fruits). I’ve been having serious conversations with my parents now about including more natural foods into their diets since they’re overweight and have the related health issues to go with that.

I'm finding this particularly worrying given the situation I find myself in in the UK. Coming out of the EU with their stringent food health safety laws that do not allow the vast majority of the 'ingredients' seen on those lists to potentially being forced to import a lot more of those American products and having our own food standards lowered due to political pressure to allow that sort of trading... I will fully admit to having junk food as part of my family's diet, but saying that, I do try and home cook more than half our meals in a given week too. It's choice verses convenience and I fear that the choice part may be taken away from us soon. The day I see a canned chicken on the shelves is the day I start shopping only at greengrocers and butchers!
@Jasondurgen
@Jasondurgen 4 года назад
I mean, you could just not buy the canned chicken and buy what you’d usually get instead. In America, most grocery stores still have all the healthy options you’re used to. It’s just less likely the average American will buy them.

I get kinda annoyed when people say eating healthy is more expensive. It’s absolutely patently false statement. I can eat 3 meals a day for under 5 bucks with healthy food way easier than I can with unhealthy processed food. A banana and oat meal for breakfast, Tuna fish sandwich for lunch and Campbell’s soup for dinner. Less than 5 bucks and lots of nutrition.
@falkonjenova
@falkonjenova 4 года назад
Those meals don't provide nearly enough nutrition for an average-sized person who works out. Campbell's soup and sandwiches are not healthy either. Fresh meat, veggies, and fruit will give you the most quality nutrition for your buck and they do add up in price.
