We've Played Luigi's Mansion 2 HD - Is It Any Good?

We have metroid prime remastered cheaper, and then we have this. For someone like me who played (and enjoyed) the 3DS version, you cannot convince me to buy this.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the game on 3DS despite its shortcomings as a sequel to the GameCube classic, this game on Switch looks cheap and lazy. For crying out loud, I think they put way more effort into the 3DS remake of Luigi's Mansion 1 than this game because they did a lot of retexture work and unfortunately had to change up the lighting to work better for 3DS, but it makes sense. This is for a much larger audience now because Luigi's Mansion 3 has come out now and sold millions in the meantime! So, you would think that they would put even further effort for this greater audience, but rather this remake seems to be made for the sole purpose of trying to make a quick buck rather than make a captivating piece of art. I don't think they adjusted the poor lighting of the original game very much, nor did they do much retexture work because everything looks pretty low in detail still. The animations of this game also look very stiff at times, which you could easily hide on 3DS, but in crisp HD on your TV will be impossible not to notice. This is on the same console as Luigi's Mansion 3 and the difference is night and day visually between the 2 games and it's embarrassing! This game could have reached its full potential on Switch looking as good, if not better than Luigi's Mansion 3! Another problem is the price, which is $60 for this barely changed 3DS game. 3DS games retail for an average price of $40 max and I even got this game for $20 9 years ago! Nintendo shouldn't get away with this and I am surprised not enough people are calling them out on this. If Nintendo didn't want this game to be compared to Luigi's Mansion 3, then they should not have made them both the exact same price. Release this game on the eShop for $30 and no one would be overly judgmental. I mean the Pikmin games were just fine that way.

So, they just updated the graphics a bit, and raised the price from 40 to 60? I'll just keep playing with the 3DS version until this one goes on sale.

Kind of ridiculous that they're charging $60 for this and it doesn't include a HD port of Luigi's Mansion (either the OG or the 3DS version) as well. Both on one cartridge and then all Luigi's Mansion games could've been on Switch.

i agree with $30 for this type of quality. The full retail is $60 and this is definitely not a $60 game.

I loved this game on 3DS and never once missed the portrait ghosts. It's a shame that this Switch version ended up being such a low-effort port job though...

It's very bizarre that the first Luigi's Mansion hasn't been ported to Switch yet considering it's a short game. Anyway, I'm looking forward to NicoB finally playing Luigi's Mansion 2.

I bought a 3ds FOR luigis mansion, same with the switch. I'm definitely adding this to my switch library. Your critiques for LM2 are pretty standard, and definitely accurate. Would have loved if they streamlined it, but I'm just excited to play it on my TV.

3DS original was my introduction to Luigi's Mansion, and I adored it. Even if this isnt exactly prime Luigi's Mansion, I love it and can't wait to get a copy.

I'm a Luigi’s Mansion 2/Dark Moon apologist, but it's complete shameful that nothing was changed. I'm not paying $60 if the only change is that the strobulb and darklight were changed from A and Y to L and R. (Apologist time for anyone who will play it: the first mansion is arguably the weakest mansion of the game, it only goes up from there. The final mansion goes unnaturally hard, especially Paranormal Chaos)

Luigi’s mansion 2 is my favorite one in the series surprisingly. I liked it more than the third one.

i know everyone has said it, but this really shouldve included the first game aswell. we got a great remaster of the first game on the 3DS. why couldnt they have included that aswell? edit: i will say though, i never understand when people complain about the mission structure though. luigis mansion 3 does the exact same thing it just disguises it with an elevator. i think the mansions actually feel more real and lived in(?) if that makes sense? the hotel in LM3 just feels so, gamey(?). I know its an unpopular opinion but yea, i actually like this game alot more than LM3

I’ve played the original 3DS version and this was a very fair review. When it was revealed I held out hope that they’d fix some of these issues and give the game some very much needed QOL changes. Unfortunately it wasn’t given nearly the same amount of love as something like Metroid Prime or Paper Mario. The video pretty much tackles all my problems with the original game and the port itself. The only good that can come from this release is if Nintendo puts the first game on Switch.

My daughters can’t wait for this. They loved LM3 and while I do own the 3DS version of this (and loved it) they can’t play on the 3DS.

Alex, I know some people are going to be very pissed at your take on this game. But I have to say I agree with everything you said even when it first came out on 3DS. Imo this is one of the most overrated games on that platform but to each their own.

All I'm saying is, if you're gonna take the original LM2 and just port it to the Switch without any semblance of new content and have the audacity to charge full price for it when the OG game was $40... You might as well just play the original on 3DS.

I played the original when it came out. It was my favorite 3ds game and still is. When I think of the 3ds. That’s the game I think of. It definitely is showing it’s age and Nintendo was VERY greedy with this release. They definitely should have done a Luigi’s mansion 1+2 pack. I’m picking it up only because I’m a game collector and it’s my favorite childhood game. But definitely not happy with how they went about it. Ps. The missions are spread out like this because the creator(can’t remember his name) was watching crime shows at the same time and wanted to make it more of an episodic game

This is exactly how I thought this game would turn out, which sucks because Luigi’s mansions 2 is my favourite game of all time. I know most people hate the mission structure but HAVE YOU PLAYED THE FIRST GAME??? It’s a door opening simulator and worse than 2. Next level games put the minimum amount of effort possible in this port. This game looks worse than the 3ds version. Egadd needs to be mutable and it’s the single worse part of the game. This game is overpriced and worse than the original dark moon. I agree with everyone who said this should’ve been Luigi’s mansion 1+2 like pikmin and I swear if Nintendo releases that in October I’m going to loose my shit because I preordered this

Theres no excuse why this is not running at 60 fps considering its a 3DS remaster with nothing added to the visuals other than higher res. Another low effort attempt. Nintendo loves shafting their fanbase

heres my opinion, the thing about luigis mansion 2 is that it has by far the most advanced combat of any game so far, its in ways a single play through might not highlight and playing it with a stick will be great

Because 3 remedied much (but not all) of this game’s problems, I don’t care about them as much now. I just hope whenever 4 comes out it gets its edge back and is genuinely unsettling again, like the original.

Dark Moon is one of my favourite games on the 3DS. It would have been great is they packed both 1 and 2 as package.

Best combat in the series, as it does end up being more engaging than how it ended ramping up in 3.

I'm probably in the minority but I enjoyed Luigi's Mansion 2 the most out of the 3 games so far, especially on the 3DS. I'm looking forward to replaying it 11 years later. I honestly don't get the argument about the price.

I did like the original on the 3DS, but... the price of this for this, coupled with the complete lack of extra content and no real noticable graphical improvements (like TTYD remake did) makes this one a *hard* pass.

I still have and enjoy the 3DS original, I didn't invest in 3 on the switch because I think games originally built for the switch are for the most part overpriced at £50-60 but I did really enjoy the online multiplayer from 2 on the 3DS, it was really addictive and had a Salmon Run feel to it.

LM2 was already my least favourite in the series, but not even properly adapting the controls and charging almost full price is absolutely ridiculous

It was great when it came out on the 3DS. The 3D effect was amazing And really drove home the whole atmosphere. Still gonna pick it up

From the trailers alone it looks worse and plays worse than the original, which is a shame, because Nintendo could do better with this classic game.

for what it is i think this game looks pretty alright on switch, as long as you don't compare it to the 3rd entry, but I understand how it's hard not to. i'd be all over this game if it was like maybe 20 bucks. when this game came out new on 3ds it was 40 bucks, for an hd remaster i don't understand how nintendo thinks pricing it 50% higher is fair, it's an 11 year old game ported to a new console with modified models and higher res graphics, just put it at 20 you greedy bastards. especially when it sounds like they did the bare minimum for control alterations.

This is why 2 is the black sheep of the family. 3 has been hailed as bringing the LM franchise back to the quality we know it can deliver. Resurrecting 2 as a Switch game but barely changing anything… why?

I played Luigi's Mansion 2 for the first time two years ago on my 3DS. Although a decent game overall, the mission structure completely sunk that game for me, and I didn't complete it the way I did 1 and 3. Collectibles are arbitrarily locked to specific missions (even though you can see them), and there's nothing telling you you can't get them yet, so you spend time on unsolvable puzzles. Then, when you walk a bit too far, the mission can end and pull you out of the location, forcing you to repeat entire sections. I felt the game was discouraging me from exploring.

Original game was 40$ at launch. You want me to pay 60$ for a mediocre port job??? 150% more expensive for a game that is identical to playing on Citra at a higher resolution??? They must be smoking crack

Luigis Mansion 2 is one of the best games ever, I can't think of a single one I don't like though, all 3 are amazing and for me the evolution in design just adds to the glory.

I will be getting it for sure….I prefer the Luigi Mansion games over Mario. Didn’t beat Luigi’s Mansion 2 and this is great FOR ME.

What you are describing was my exact experience with the origunal Luigi's Mansion 2. I was glad to have a ne LM game after a decade, but the mission structure and generic ghosts were... just okay. I still have my 3DS version, so I'm skipping this port.

The $60 price tag is quite egregious for what looks like a pretty basic port job, there have been no mentions of new content, so I highly doubt there's any. It barely looks any different than the 3DS original besides the higher resolution and the experience is identical so... idk, this should have been $40 like Metroid Prime imo, I don't really care it's part of the Mario IP.

Honestly, I don't really mind the idea of the "squint your eyes and you couldn't tell the difference" approach to doing a remaster, if anything I think there's actually some value in trying to keep the original visual direction completely in tact, but taking that approach for a remaster you're planning on charging full price for feels like a missed opportunity at best.

Mission structure on the 3DS just so you can play in short bursts never made much sense anyways considering that thing will last DAYS in sleep mode and you can continue right where you open it back up

This is quite ridiculous. I noticed they added textures on Luigi’s overalls, mustache and his back hair but they didn’t do the same thing for his front hair, his green outfits and cap. They could have done the same thing for king boo by using his model from LM3 but he looks like he was upscaled from the 3ds version.

Even if LM2 is the agreed weakest of the trilogy, I’m still excited to try it out as a fan of 3

LM2 is the worst game in the series but I did still enjoy it on the 3DS. However, I remember quite a lot was done with 3D - particularly with mirror surfaces, where you could tell what was going to attack you and what was not due to 2d Vs 3d. The chunkier visual style also worked well with the 3d diorama vibe. I think the 3DS hardware is integral to this game, is what I'm getting at, and I think full price lazy port is a bad move.

When people wonder why some of us have been giving Nintendo a ton of crap lately, this release is a prime example of why. More than anything, how in the hell can they be asking $60 for this? I thought it was too much for TTYD but for this game?! It was 40 bucks new when it came out on the 3DS. The 3DS is not that old a console. You can pick one up pretty easily and get this game for dirt cheap. Why oh why does Nintendo do this? It honestly feels insulting to its consumer base.

I mean, you're 'correct' to point out the outrageous price of full retail ($60) that some of these re-Makes go for but I think you're off the mark with the rest of your opinions and criticism. Many did like the mission structure because Luigi's Mansion in the end was never really that sort of Open-ended or Open world type of game. Plus, yes this is ''not an objective metric'' but the game has a certain charm that the 1st game and even no 3 don't have.

I'm gonna skip this one, I still have my 3ds copy that I bought for 60usd from day one... It's a fun game don't get me wrong but it is a very short game with basically no replay value (no bonuses or secret ending to complete it 100%) so it's not worth the asking price tbh

Man $60 (US) for an HD port of Luigi's Mansion 2 is actually insane. Nintendo just keeps getting more and more greedy. I love the series, but that's an easy pass.

I personally fear this is a little unfair because he is comparing it to LM3 a lot. It reminds me of Zions review of Immortals Fenyx Rising comparing it to BOTW.

Thank you. This review saved me some money. I've been contemplating on getting this one since all of Nintendo's remakes have been champions so far. If graphics is the only thing improved in this remaster, then I'll stick with the 3DS version and skip this one.

Never played LM1...Played LM3 on Switch and loved it. I am definitely going to get this one, but i do think they should've had 1+2 as a bundle.

Shame about not updating the camera & other things it could've adapted better with. Than again, Luigi's Mansion 2 is my least favorite of the 3 games. So I won't be getting the game anyway. I rather they remastered the first Luigi's Mansion instead.

unfortunately my 3ds is broken because whenever I was mad as a kid I used to press down really hard on the screen causing my 3ds too bleed from the inside and covered most of my screen with this black ooze. I literally only wanted to get my 3ds fixed just so i could play luigis mansion again and go back in and 3 star every level but that never happened then Nintendo decides to rerelease it on switch and I think this is perfect for me but of course their greedy asses really made it 60 instead of keeping it at the price it was back in 2013. Its crazy too cause I wouldn't even be buying it again had my 3ds worked but at least 60 dollars is cheaper than getting a 3ds fixed or buying a new one entirely

I’m happy because this is Luigi’s mansion 2, a really damn good game, on switch, but they could have done so much more. I probably won’t buy it since I already own it on my 3ds, but this is cool for newcomers of the series.

The issue here is that you played 3 before you played 2, and can now see all of the flaws more clearly.

This Luigi’s mantion is my favorite and even I think the best multiplayer. I like the little details like how Luigi can jump to dodge an attack while sucking up ghosts. And as he gets dragged the floors has hot spots where his feet were at. Luigi never misses leg day 😤

Nah, I am a jaded 32 y/o that bought it on release on the 3ds (back then we were starving for Luigi's mansion) and even then we had the same complaints. Shame the mission system and interruptions are still there.
