In a bit of a departure from our usual content, today we visit two locations associated with World War II veteran, Edward "Babe" Heffron, a well-known member of Easy Company, 506 PIR, 101st Airborne.

My father "Wallop Evans" was a friend of Babe's, they grew up together, my mother Rita Plunkett went all through elementary school with Babe at Sacred Heart - 3rd. & Reed Streets. Wallop was a Sailor, served in WWII, South Pacific and Korea. I remember meeting Babe at a Communion Breakfast at the Catholic War Veterans Club when I was a kid, he was a very unassuming gentleman. My father told me some stories about Babe as I was growing older. I became a Paratrooper/ Ranger and served with 173rd Airborne Brigade/75th Rangers in Vietnam. Babe had an influence on me. RIP Babe - Great Man.

I met Babe and Bill at Dick Winter's public memorial. They were there together and were the center of much attention. One of their children was kept busy trying to keep them from getting thronged by well-wishers. Neither of them were towering individuals but they were giants in the service.

From UK here. Great video. Babe and Wild Bill, what a pair of characters. Loved B of B. Visiting Bastoigne pre covid I made a special trip to Foy to see where they fought in the Bois Jaques Foxholes. Very moving experience. Truly, brave heros and saddened by both men passing. Currrahee!

Took one picture of a particular foxhole and sent it to my son titled''Bill Guarnere was here', which my son, another admirer, liked. Stood at the corner where Shifty Powers took that shot! Amazing. You must go it will be a lifetime experience. Fine memorial there too. Call in at the Baugnes Crossroads Memorial outside Malmedy. Real Education. Take care.

What you mentioned as Heffron's "riflemans badge" is actually the US Army Combat Infantryman Badge, which is, for all intents and purposes, the most coveted qualification badge a soldier can earn. They don't just give those away. You can only earn it by being in direct combat/under enemy fire for a specified minimum period of time. As for the story, well done. That's the most unique final resting place I've seen/heard of.

Yes, the CIB, without question is the most coveted and highly valued badge. But, isn't it interesting how the Airborne soldiers of long ago wore their parachute wings above the CIB.

Cpl Heffron is wearing a post-V-Day uniform configuration. The 4 pocket Service Coat of wool serge, has the "Ruptured Duck" WWII demobilization/discharge patch on his right chest. Below the Ruptured Duck is the blue ribbon/gold frame Presidential Unit Citation that was awarded to the 101st Airborne Division for Operation Overload with a palm leaf device denoting the 2nd award for the defense of Bastogne. The PUC is a "unit" award, it is worn on the dress uniform of ALL personnel while assigned to that unit but personnel who were participants of the operation/event for which it was awarded are authorized to wear it permanently. I'm a veteran of the 502nd but of the late 80s and 90s.

My husband earned Combat Infantry Badge (CIB), which I think he was proudest of, Airborne Jump Wings second and the other 14 were just being a good soldier, but I will tell you there was a Bronze star w/device and a purple Heart as well. When he passed he was qualified to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery. He earned his CIB in Vietnam as a backfiller for the 173rd Infantry in 1968 and did two Combat Tours. Babe thank you for your service, you were truly "One of the Greatest Generations" we owe so much to you and all of your Generation.

I've been revisiting the series as I now own it on bluray and I'll probably be watching the entire thing through the 3rd time before I put it away for a while. I love the the story of these men, these brothers and they were truly that. I especially enjoy the commentary by the survivors at the time of production... All these guys had amazing personalities some super funny and just big characters like Wild Bill and Babe. We get so used to thinking of our dads and grand dads as older people but they were once young, they were big characters, some drank alot, some got into fights and some like these guys did all that and saved the world while doing it. Rest easy, Easy Company!!!

Such good men and great Americans! Thank you. I remember an interview of them speaking about how this country had changed for the worse over the years and if all the sacrifices of their generation during the war was still worth it. Can't imagine what they would be thinking of these disgusting Marxist trends today.... we owe it to them to do better.

I had no idea there was a memorial to Babe and Bill, and would have never guessed Babes ashes were in the statue. Joe Toye is buries in Laureldale, PA near where I live. And of course Dick Winters is buried in Ephrata PA in Lancaster County. It's cool to know some of the key figures of Easy Company's story as portrayed in BOB are all from SE Pa.

All the bravest and best soldiers were short guys. Wild bill, Heffron, even Audy Murphy. Margaret Thatcher former PM of Britain attended a convention of the SAS who stormed the Iranian embassy freeing the hostages and dispatching the hostage takers. Remarking. I have never been in a room with so many short men. The Gurkhas who are extremely brave ferocious fighters are 5.5 or less. There is a link and pattern throughout history of short guys being the bravest and most ferocious.

Learning that he and his wife's ashes were inside the statute, unexpectedly hit me right in the tear ducts. It'll likely be a while before my remains are placed with those of my wife, and I'll have been waiting a long time as I lost her to cancer more than ten years ago already, but when you have a bond in marriage that works and is strong then it is only right and fitting that the mortal remnants rest together, or so I think.

The CIB should be displayed above all other badges and ribbons
@vynyly
@vynyly 2 месяца назад
That's true now, and I'm only speculating here, but I think for many early airborne soldiers, they earned their jump wings before the CIB was even established (Nov 1943), so the jump wings probably meant even more to them at the time. The original Toccoa Easy Company was already in England by Sept of '43. Again, just guessing.
