In my college days I lived in a Kollegium (dorm). When there was a party, the Faroe Islanders living there would meet in our kitchen to party with each other and easy food from home, sent in care packages from their mothers. I would often join. Great people. The food was often a little bit scary, though. I kind of like raw whale blubber. But sheep's heads are not my thing.

Having spent my entire chilhood life there, I had almost forgotten the sheer beauty that envelops the place. It's intriguing to witness the island through the eyes of others. Quite eye opening, really! Next time you should visit the old raidar base at Sornfelli, its an amazing view at the top.

Vágar Airport had it´s runway extended in 2011, from 1259 meters to 1799 meters. Maybe 3-4 years ago, the Atlantic Airwas fleet and Vagar airport installed a tecnology called RNP AR 0.1, making landing and taking off with the newer aircrafts, much more stable, dispite foggy or a bit windy weather. So, Josh, if you think it´s a full speed / full stop takeoff and landing now - oh, boy would you have shit your pants before they extended the runway🙃 Great video, and when you have visited a few more times, you vill get the pronunciations even better 😉

We also visited the Faroes in the summer of 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, since it was literally the ONLY place we were allowed to travel to during that peak pandemic time, since the Faores are technically a part of Denmark. It was truly an awesome experience. The landscapes are breathtaking, and well worth the visit even though the weather is typically poor. We went in early July, which meant it NEVER got dark. We drove the length of Kalsoy through all the one lane tunnels, but never saw another car the whole way. We took the same boat trip as you, and also took a helicopter flight, which is really cheap there since it is like a bus service, but you can only go one way so as to discourage tourists overwhelming the system (we took an actual bus back). Very cool to see the islands from the air. We would definitely go back.

Thank you for sharing this great experience. If you are ever going out make a job change you could make a living out of making advertising films for travelling. Bye the way it’s funny how you mentioning height and that you are scared of that and then still sit by the window in the air plain remember those can fall down to. Actually the Danish army lost its commander in chief in the 90 when the crashed the airplane landing on the airport at Thorshavn, so maybe next time take the ferry from Hirtshals that can only sink😉

That is kind of you to say! I have some ideas for elaborate travel/history videos in Denmark - perhaps one day I will find the time to research/plan/execute :). Oddly enough looking out of a plane doesn't scare me at all, in fact I love it. But that feeling turns to terror once my feet are on the ground and I am close to a ledge.

As a common guest to Malta, Faroese owned "Atlantic Airways" has got a contract to fly directly down from Cph. to Maltese Luqa Airport. And Vagar Airport is known for its difficult landings, during special weather, so we do feel safe with a skilled Danish pilot and a crew, all speaking Danish. And modern Airbus planes of different sizes. And we have a Danish planned, built and now, owned vacation area in Mellieha (99%) on a large area of land, with a lot of separately built chalkstone houses in a kind of Park with passes in between. Malta is also a former Crusader area with fortified towns, and "Danish" flags! They claim it was a "worn" flag that Waldemar got delivered in Estonia, during the battle, and that is why the rectangles aren't the same! We know that German Crusaders fought close to Waldemar, so it may have been one of their flags he took home? Og course it looked much different by then.

Many of the pilots of Atlantic Airways are from Faroe Islands
@pleasedontkillme1185
@pleasedontkillme1185 Год назад
Like mentioned earlier, the very good pilots are the faroese ones working on atlantic airways. The danish dominant one would be SAS and they still cancel or delay flights way more than Atlantic Airways will. It does help ofcourse that the Atlantic airways planes has been specially built to handle fog and cloudy weather better than other planes, simply due to how much fog and clouds we get. I'm not entirely sure if other airlines has started to adopt the technology ours got yet or if it's still just unique to us.

It really is a beautiful and special place. About the airport there is an ancient joke about it. A pilot is coming in to land, for the first time, he does his checklist and begins the approach. When he sees the runway through the low clouds, he goes in, puts the wheels down just barely inside the asphalt, slams on all the brakes, the engines roar, the whole fuselage shakes violently, all the passengers are jerked forward in their seats, smoke billows from the brakes, but he makes it, the plane comes to a complete stop just still inside the asphalt. The Pilot exhales and remarks "Damn, that is a short runway, but man is it wide."

Awesome :) I visited the Faroe Islands in 9th grade in folkeskolen. Amazing place :) BTW, what's the prices when you had lunch? I remember a normal looking pizza place in Torshavn, a normal sized cheese only pizza, the cheapest pizza on the menu of all pizza places, costing around 300DKK... So I can't imagine a restaurant is any cheaper.. :)

I'd assume your memory of the price is also hazy because I'm running on living here for 14 years and a normal pizza from a grill place has never closely costed that before. Or if that was the price then I'm sorry to say but you got scammed. You might see 3 course meals in restaurants cost 300+ dkk but never a single course unless it's an extremely fancy restaurant
