Took a trip to Interior, S.D. and spent time with the poorest of our nation.
No free cell phones. No welfare checks. No child services that we could see.
Alcoholism. Meth. Homelessness.

I'm afraid that Lord Jesus dragged them to where they are today. Give them back their old ways, their pride, their culture - everything that was so brutally destroyed. I'm born and raised in Europe. I visited Wounded Knee right after coming to the US, a long time ago. To put some flowers, to apologize for the atrocities committed by my race. Expected crowds doing the same. But I was the only one there. Then I met amazing Lakota people - generous, smart, interesting. Welcoming. It was almost 40 years ago. I would like to go back but I am afraid that my heart will be broken again seeing what the wealthiest country on Earth did to its native sons and daughters.

Great spirit is all things alive or in motion. The lady bug you see on your door screen, the tall grass you wack away out of convenience, the fire you feed on a Friday night, the lake you last went fishing on. Your mother, and child, they all share this grandfather of being. It has the power, if observed properly, to connect all things simultaneously. The bird you see, watching for bugs you'll never see, riding on wind you don't acknowledge unless it gets strong enough, searching bushes for color of berries, those berries hoping to be eaten by the bird in hopes to spread it's seed, while a fish flutters away because it seen wings, flowing with the water until it sees a larva, while a hawk is on the lookout for that fish, a rabbit sees that hawk, and runs off, alerting a squirrel. It goes to it's nest to eat seeds, 15 years later nearby because of this all, a tree is now on its way to maturity because of that squirrel. A new cycle of the same events will surely happen in that tree within its lifetime.

I think that Congress needs to stop with the restrictions given to these people and state and local governments have to stop with the anti native bull. Let these people thrive. These people need to be allowed to have their own business on their land. The government is making them plead to get funding to be turned down and they can only do so much. I don’t believe they should assimilate like us all. They have a beautiful culture that is being hindered. I welcome anyone from any tribe that wants my land when I pass on. I am going to will it to someone may as well give it back. I just say to these people. Keep fighting and live in hopes even when it seems hopeless it is not. To this guy who has an opinion. Maybe if you learned from the Lakota maybe you see there culture has more common sense than you did in this video. I was raised to listen and not be afraid to learn. I love the culture even though I raised with both cultures.

Had a hard time with this video. You did not present both sides as stated. You came in quoting scriptures and pressing religious overtones then present them as lost people that need Jesus to save them. The great Christian white men came in and encroached their lands and way of life and have the nerve to call themselves Christian. Real Christ like. The last thing they need is to have outside beliefs forced upon them. Ever wonder what you would thing if the shoe was on the other foot? Did you even attempt to understand their ways and beliefs. Listen to them? Maybe those children are happy because they do not have so much of the commercial items you tend to give your children.

I appreciate your comment so much. We can look across history and see many, many other peoples who were conquered, displaced, mistreated and exploited. It didn't just happen here. What, then, is the answer to the current dillemma? Rampant drug use, gangs.....an average life expectancy of 45! I would suggest it is not look back at the injustice done, but to look forward. I have only known one anewer to the cycle of drug addiction and it is the Lord --- not religion, but a personal one on one communion with the one true God who loves us. It's all I've got. After all these years, things get worse. If someone had a better answer....wouldn't it have been exercised by now? I mean only to express my love and care for a group of hurting people.

@@grandpasmountain Our people suffer from depression caused from the boarding schools cycle of generational abuse. Love is the fire that ignites your emotions and if you are not shown this as a child it can block you from ever feeling them. Any pain you experience at that point will cause your depression and it can do so unknowingly. This is the effect the schools had on me and so many others. I call it the invisible prison. The effect of the boarding schools have trapped the emotions, the souls of our people. You can't heal if you can't feel. It's taken me a 1/2 ounce of psychedelic mushrooms and 15 months of therapy, yoga, and meditating for me to heal from the emotional trauma from the schools but I did it and I am going to help others heal and get in touch with their emotions. The boarding schools have taught our own people that Natives are bad and the whole country. They've taken the love out of the most spiritual people on the planet, but I am going to put it back. We don't need churches we just need community. We are the most spiritual people on the planet and we will show the world what love really is.

@@argophagley5309 I respect your opinion, but it is not only flawed logic, but flawed theology :) In order for there to be love there must be free will. Man chose to turn away from God and sin. We live in a flawed sin-filled world. Man has chosen that. Not God. We come to God on His terms, not our own, and not to a god of our own imagination. If He's God --- truly God, He doesn't need our approval. He declares Himself and what He requires. God DEMONSTRATED His love, in that while we were sinners --- not caring about Him, He went first and suffered and died to pay for our sins -- so that we may be made right with Him and enjoy His blessings. You have free will like the rest of us. You may choose. God implores us to choose life. Thanks for writing me.

The historical footprint of the "lord Jesus" is largely responsible for the conditions they experience. Settlers came, destroyed their way of life and forced their European religious and social ideals on these people. The problems are hugh and based on your worldview it is easy to see how your response to something that seems insurmountable is to go to the fall back position of saying only Jesus can solve this. I appreciate your time and effort to try to be helpful, but this impulse to say Jesus can take care of it ultimately not helpful and can be harmful in a way. Forcing the Indians to Christian boarding schools, tearing them away from their families and culture and spiritual practices is one of the main reasons for these problems. To introduce the solution as more of what initially contributed greatly to the problem is short sided and potentially destructive. I feel your interest to help is genuine and so I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you are just not using this opportunistically as a situation to spread your beliefs. My strong suggestion is to go and try to be helpful. Go as human beings and make a difference. Leave any talk (or songs) of Christianity out of it. If being a good person for you is partly because you are Christian, then use your Christianity as a personal driver, One that drives and motivates you to do good. But please leave it out of your interactions with the Lakota in an overt way. You are inadvertently likely contributing to the problem and potentially muddying the waters and creating a psychological conflict / dilemma for them and making it less likely that they will be able to allow your goodness to really have a lasting effect for them. Being overtly "Christian" may seem the thing to you from your perspective, but think of it from their perspective, as a people damaged historically from the white man's Christianity. This psychological - cultural conflict will ultimately reduce your effectiveness in trying to make an impact. . With older Children and adults I can see a potential conversation about how Christianity has harmed their culture, and your attitude being one of conciliation and apology. This could have a real impact. I believe This of course would preclude trying to continue proselytizing and being more interested in their world view and spiritual traditions and not so much sharing your own. If someone became interested in Christianity as a byproduct of your goodness and conciliatory stance, then they would be more likely to be able to integrate into themselves more fully with less existential conflict pulling them one way and the other . I wish you all the best in what you do and offer these suggestion in the spirit of trying to be helpful. **(After writing this and reading the comments, I see you have experience making violins). I am a violinmaker (Peter Lynch Violins) and the president of the Michigan Violinmakers Association. All the best with your work :)
@grandpasmountain
@grandpasmountain 4 года назад
Thankyou for writing, Peter. I totally get what you are saying--- and I agree 100% that, historically, many things done in the name of "Christianity" have been harmful, and therefore just plain wrong. I grew up with Christianity. When my life got so terrible that I decided to end it, "Christianity" wasn't the solution. I lost everything, including my children, despite how hard I had tried to live as a moral, caring man and a loving father. I was sleeping in an empty building with no plumbing on a plywood floor with just a sleeping bag and it got worse. "Christianizing" is not the answer. These wonderful folks have a rich history and culture to be proud of. But just like I was, are struggling with the solution. The area of the reservation where I was is over run with gangs and drugs. We had to leave by 4pm every day because it wasn't safe for us to be there. I do not believe that you think that the answer to the current situation of broken homes, violence and drug addiction can be answered with traditional Indian customs or religion--- Just like my life couldn't be fixed with "Christianity". The question which begs to be answered is "what is the solution to MY life problems". I had to find out for myself that God really is real, that things I read in the Bible are true (read in context). I am not the same man I was, at all. God has changed my heart. Jesus said, "I came that you might have life and have it more abundantly". He was here. Either he was a deceptive liar, which would make him evil, or He is truly the Son of God who gave his life for me. Either what he said is true or not. I have worked with drug addicts for years. I know that when they turn to God, ask for forgiveness and a new start, God gives it every single time. God is a God of new beginnings and hope and He loves to work within a people's culture and heritage, not take it away. I only want to share the healing I have experienced with the ones I see hurting. I wish I could wave a magic wand and fix everything for the Lakota. Especially the children who suffer so much. I'm not strong enough. God is.

I really liked/appreciated your comment. I agree that trying to peddle ones religion into a situation is not such a great idea. It could, and HAS caused harm; helped destroy their culture and their history. And comes across as kind of condescending. What one persons beliefs are is fine for them, but I've always disliked the doctrine of "THIS belief alone is your salvation"... Aside from that, I liked his apparent kind intentions.

@@grandpasmountain You are a very fortunate person, if you have truly begun to recognise the truths of the spirit, for few truly do, but these are not confined to a belief in Jesus, despite the fact that I know He was the Son of God. Other Divine Envoys have been too, who barely anyone knows of, and the life and works of Christ, akin to many truth-bringers, such as Buddha, have been dramatically altered, sometimes by well-doers, to suit the erring mankind. The prophecies and ways of the Lakota, and other tribal nations, tells me that these people have been, and still are in some instances, a very spiritual people, with a deep understanding of truth and sacredness. The adverse effects of the white invasion left many of them grieving, despairing, and open to the path of alcohol, so that a bridge was formed into the beyond, so that spirits could incarnate with these propensities, although because there were still some noble people left among them, a line of spiritual people could also continue alongside those with substance misuse issues and suicidal tendencies. Whichever path of truth one takes, recognition of the laws of creation will surface through recognition upon one's path. Many of those suffering are likely the white invaders, who must suffer what they have sown, for such is the mercy of the Almighty, for it was they who contributed to the plight of the indigenous peoples. I have already then spoken of 2 main laws of creation, that a man sows what he reaps, and the law of homogeneity, that both give greater clarity to any issue. And I agree with your fellow violin maker, that to truly make beautiful, spiritual music, it is best that one develops oneself, and simply learn to be. This then, has a magical, magnetic effect upon those around you, without having to say a single thing, especially if your life is truly filled with the joy and blessings of the Great Spirit, for as I said, a man can only reap what he hath sown. I am not saying do not be dismayed and inspired by what you saw though, it's just finding the right way of helping, particularly in relation to the state of mind, for many would find such an attitude condescending. I simply pray on such matters, and await the outcome, for there is always something we can do, usually improvements in ourselves, and sparing others good thoughts! With that, wishing you good thoughts too, all the best!

@@nialloneill5097 I appreciate your comment and I think you would be a facinating person to talk with. Sadly, "Christian" has become a tarnished moniker. When the term was first coined, it mean "Christ follower", not "person cramming religion down people's throats and hoping to make a profit in so doing". I would share with you my firm belief in the Bible (always in context) as the source of not just wisdom, but as God's words to us. Truly it is the only available source of knowledge of God. In it, God claims exclusivity, and claims the only way to Him is through faith in His Son, Jesus. "There is no other name under heaven, given among men, whereby we must be saved". Having been rescued myself, I am compelled to share my story in hopes others will be rescued as well. I hope all who see my little amateur video understand my love and care for my fellow man --- regardless of skin color.

@@grandpasmountain I totally agree that the expression, or description, Christian, has become badly tainted and misunderstood. I consider myself a Christ follower, but I cannot put such faith in the bible, which is clearly written by men, and whom you could tell them one thing, then less than 5 minutes later, they would distort what was said. The human in us is too weak and fallible to take to the Word of God, and truly understand It. Although, conviction in Christ is one means of spiritual ascent, if applied well, for by their works ye shall know them, it is not an exclusive path. If a man can give himself up, in purity and humility, and be prepared to selflessly serve His Creator by pursuing good works and truth, by whichever name he chooses, he can find the path to redemption, and thereby salvation. The Son of God was an emergency measure, sent due to the Fall of Man, and the serious consequences of this Fall, which threatened, and still do, the very existence of mankind upon earth, as prophesied. He was preceded by another envoy of God at the time of Moses, who then returned, at the request of Christ, as men did not hearken sufficiently to the Words of Christ, and who preferred to crucify Him, rather than follow Him. And this Envoy was none other than the prophesied Son of Man, Who is at the same time, the conduit of the energies from the Divine, and therefore the Pure Gate, and Divine Will of God, namely the Holy Spirit, Immanuel. He too was maltreated by men, although very few knew of His Coming, for they had closed themselves off to spiritual tidings too much, apart from maybe the natives of the US, who had been prepared long ago, to have faith in the Great Spirit, and Mother Earth, for there are many goddess type servants of God, who distribute the female aspect, or energy, of the Divine. Thus, these noble people, were able to receive tidings of the prophesied Apocalypse, and the earth changes that are coming, along with the need for man of changing their approach to life and their Creator, if they are to survive. All these matters are discussed by the Son of Man in the Legacy that He left upon earth, for the salvation of mankind, in His Book, which truly is the Word of God. It is called In the Light of Truth, for it contains nothing but the Truth, and how could it not, when the Holy Spirit, or Spirit of Truth, wrote the Book. The problem for men is that he has become spiritually obtuse, without knowing just how far he stands apart from the Light and the Truth, but as I said earlier, by their works ye shall know them. See the Cry of the Earth conference to hear some of the prophecies of the native tribes, including the Lakota. All the best!

Capitalism and corporatism are just an extension of the white invasion of the US. This is why the natives said the white man had a mental disease, although all races are now prone to this illness. It is called allowing the intellect to dominate our lives, for it constantly lusts for material possessions, and morbid desires, including dominating others. The spirit, through the intuition would not do this, as it is linked to the higher realms in the beyond, and of the spirit, and therefore linked to truth and the desire for a virtuous way of living. To see how this works, one just needs to look at the fruits of modern men, for what a man sows, he must reap many times over. I think the native prophecies are highlighting this fundamental need for change, but it is not easy for some to surrender their souls to the Great Spirit, or God, in whichever guise one dresses it up as. However, we need to do our best, and the old traditional ways of the natives were a really good guide to a spiritual way of living, I feel. Let's see! By the way, I too came from a mining town in the UK, called Barnsley, full of a very proud people, but it has been devastated by pit closures too. On the positive side, there are better ways to live, than 1000 feet down underground, in a load of black dust, it's just sad that alternative employment is not offered to the people, for theirs and the communities benefit, proving that we are all merely commodities in a capitalist regime. Spiritual communities on the other hand, are sustainable, and care for one another, and for nature and the environment, for he who lives by his spirit reveres the abundance of gifts proffered by the Creative Hand, or Will. Hope your town recovers its identity and individuality somehow, and finds new hope, perhaps through a better mode of living, that is not linked to the ruthless nature of capitalism, and the despots who drive it.

Remember what Crazy Horse said: "“Upon suffering beyond suffering; the Red Nation shall rise again and it shall be a blessing for a sick world. A world filled with broken promises, selfishness and separations. A world longing for light again. I see a time of seven generations when all the colors of mankind will gather under the sacred Tree of Life and the whole Earth will become one circle again. In that day there will be those among the Lakota who will carry knowledge and understanding of unity among all living things, and the young white ones will come to those of my people and ask for this wisdom. I salute the light within your eyes where the whole universe dwells. For when you are at that center within you and I am in that place within me, we shall be as one.” The was Crazy Horses prophecy 4 days before they assassinated him.

Someone who knows the true situation and history of my people. I wish that there was good news and a simple answer to your question, but the situation is very complicated. It would be easier to explain in actual conversation. Too much for a simple text. It is a sad complex situation... but NOT IN THE WAY HE KEEPS SAYING! He is a liar. He lies about us and he lies to himself. He is delusional. And he knows nothing about my people or this reservation. A good place to begin finding the answer to your question would be to watch Russel Means speak to congress, It's on youtube (I'm sorry if I spelled his name incorrectly). A bundle of mixed messages to this video begins to tell a story of the serious crimes committed by arrogant, psychopathic, colonialists and religious zealots, who due to their own guilt feel a need to subdue, even exterminate others, especially the indigenous peoples. And now it seems that the Lakota, amongst other tribes, still retain a semblance of their former nobility and glory, but this has been soured by the effects of the aforementioned colonial invasion, which decimated their ability to live according to the ways of the Great Spirit, who proffered an abundance of game and other fruits for the sustenance of this, and many other indigenous tribes. Now the Darkness has greatly reduced these types and modes of living, through the domination of corporate companies, building developers, farmers, and government planners, who have concretised the earth, so that large vistas of natural wildlife have been replaced by swathes of shopping malls and cities, where squalor and poverty simply takes a slightly different form, from those with problems on the res. It is easier said than done to have hope, but from my own experience, it can only be born from a conviction in the Laws of Creation, through an intuitive sensing of and longing for beauty and truth, and a deep desire to serve the people and the Creator, and this universal desire expresses itself in many ways. For some the Great Spirit, or Great Mystery proffered this hope and purpose in life, whilst for others Jesus brought the Word, then there were forerunners of Truth in most nations, who attempted to keep alive in people the longing for the one true God, however, you name Him. The inconsistencies of these various belief systems, and the sty called the earth, only concurs and confirms to me that man has not yet sufficiently opened his spirit to the promptings of the Light, for once he does, he will develop a conviction in his thoughts and actions, for they will be aligned to the Will of the Almighty, and lead to reliable human beings, who share the same value systems and spiritual principles, which will naturally lead to trust, peace and respect for all creatures. Rarely, has so much damage been done to a people though, as occurred when the Western Christians were sent to the US, and S America, to purge the souls of these apparently unclean, heathen peoples, whilst removing their land, dignity and way of life. They thereby self-righteously divorced these people from their connection to the Almighty, and conviction in their spiritual disciplines and practices. Spiritual murder and genocide on this level will take a lot to redeem for those who inflicted these atrocities, but let's not forget, man is spirit, and needs more than one life to develop and for there to be justice in life, for the mercy of God is everywhere, thus, some of the natives are probably the former white religious zealots, and soldiers, who persecuted and attempted to exterminate these people. For so as a man sows, so he shall reap. Sadly, a Roman emperor removed the mention of reincarnation, due to his guilt, and so he managed to buy off the clergy at the Treaty of Constantinople, showing how difficult it is for anyone with a spiritual longing, like the Lakota, to believe in something based upon fraudulence and falsehood, rather than truth, and man Christians devoutly do not believe in reincarnation. For those who have lived through this genocide, what further proof is needed of the falsehood of many religious zealots??? None!!! I myself lived through the last of the 'glory' days, and died at the hands of traitors, but know now that the real enemy is not the white man, but his ways, which are oft the ways of the Darkness, that never stops in its attempts to drag people towards the abyss and eternal disintegration. Many events are coming now that have been forewarned of in bygone days, when people's wrong courses will become apparent, so some, at the last moment, may recognise the Truth of the Great Spirit, or Almighty, and begin to lead a truly God-willed existence, which ironically, many of the natives were already doing before the entrance of the whites. No, they did not have steel, plastic and other mod cons, but if man thinks this qualifies him as a superior being, as some seem to, then, he is in for a very big shock, and very, very soon. Blessings to the Lakota, and may the path of the spirit reveal itself to all, before it's too late, for it is the doom of men that they forget it !!! And thanks for the video!
@nialloneill5097
@nialloneill5097 3 года назад
It is also worth noting that many people who who formerly lived within these tribes, will be drawn to their original way of life, and despair at some of the current conditions on the res, and similar places, for it is only human to find them abhorrent, all the more so, if one has an affiliation to them, and only each individual can determines this truth deep within his soul, which has doubtless seen and lived in many, different cultures...all for its development...and at times, atonement !!!

I guess it is not easy to see something which one has and has benefitted from all ones life. And at whose expense one has it. It is shameful... Sometimes I try to explain this concept to other white people... Reparations are long overdue, though they could never really repair the damage, it would be a good place to start, and might begin to raise awareness. And correct all the history books. I believe that the souls of the colonizers and thieves and killers are tarnished by their evil deeds (I don't mean in a "Christian" way). I hate that I am part of that, from the people who did that... Thank you for taking the time to help me learn and understand. Much respect......

Looks like government subsidized housing. My friend's mother lives in a home just like the homes depicted in the video...minus the boarded up windows. It seems nice a quiet there and, at least, the kids are outside, socializing, and playing unlike the majority of the kids in my neighborhood who would prefer to play videogames inside or be buried into their cellphones like little, braindead, zombies.

@@surrealbox I hope you read my reply. First, I'm not a missionary worker at all. I'm just a guy and the fellow who was supposed to drive a team of teenagers out got cancer and couldn't go. I have extensive driving experience, so I was asked. As far as "Jesus" goes -- I want you to know I am not a fan of religion. Lists of rules and stuff so you can be super holy and all. My life fell apart. I decided to take my life one day. Things were really bad. I talked to God and asked for help. Religious stuff I grew up with wasn't holding up to real life and I questioned everything. I had to search for myself and through all that I found a God that loves me, forgives me, and helps me and gave Himself for me. I am amazed and grateful and not the same guy I once was. So -- I drive to South Dakota for the first time in my life and meet these people who's lives are a wreck, kids are suffering, the average life expectancy there is 45 -- like a 3rd world country. My heart hurts for these folks and I can't help but want to share MY story, and I did. God saved me. From myself, my pain, depression, and my own sinfulness. I am so very thankful. I wish everyone could have what I have. And it IS through Jesus as He reveals Himself to me in the Bible -- NOT what religions or the History Channel or people say. I wish I could meet you and you could see the change in me. I'm not the same anymore -- I'm forgiven! :)

You must have me confused with someone else... 1) Never at any point have I ever "blamed failures" on anyone. In fact, quite the opposite. I have never failed at anything that I have endeavored to do. I majored in Astrophysics with a minor in Aviation Science, I am a former Army Officer and Helicopter Pilot (OH-58D Kiowa Warrior), I am currently an Engineer specializing in MRI and CT machines, and I am also a 3rd degree black belt martial arts instructor. All of which I accomplished after my mom died and I was orphaned at the age of 15. I've done just fine thank you very much. Nothing is "holding me back". Your dumbass words not mine. 2) Also, I am a Christian, meaning I am not a racist. ALL people are beautiful children of God. Color means nothing. 3) And OH YES I WOULD certainly protect children from strange adults initiating inappropriate interaction. Without question! What kind of person thinks that someone is "all talk" when it comes to protecting children? You are creepy. EDIT: And the fight for equality and justice will NEVER be "over".
