In 1994 my father drove 22 people on a 21 foot wooden boat to leave Cuba and we made it to dry tortugas. My brother and I were 5 and remember some of the bad weather along the way. It took my dad 28 hours to find land because we had an old boat with old motor and the current would slow us down tremendously, but he did it without resting. We made it and 30 years later we have worked hard and made a beautiful life here. We are very blessed. Great video, I will take my boys there soon so they can something about their history.

This was fascinating. Your children are going to turn into amazing adults because of how you're educating them with experiences. My parents did the same thing, and it led to me continuing to travel myself when old enough. The same for my now adult child, who literally travels the world. Nothing beats actual hands-on experience 👍

What a great trip, and it was excellent seeing the whole family having such a great time. These are the true halycon days for you all, and you and yours taking the kids on trips like this to see and experience the world is perhaps some of the best education that they'll get. (Yes, reading, writing and math are super important, but so is knowing what kind of world we live in.) I hope you all have the best of holidays and that 2023 brings more exciting travels for you!

One of the most impressive architectural feats of its time. I help sandblast and repaint the harbor lighthouse on top of the fortress. This is one of the few of its kind. The fort at key West was actually leveled on purpose. Turns out that the rubble is better protection than a fortress. It's an impressive place. Every brick place like artwork. Done with soldiers dressed in wool during the summer time. Drinking rainwater and steamed distilled water. Loading coal off the docks into warships. Near the entrance to the reef is Iowa Rock. Yes the Iowa ran around there for 3 days. It is still an important place guarding the soft white underbelly of America and the Gulf Coast. Fort Jefferson a lot of people died there. A lot of people lived because of Dr Mudd. So much history there. You could spend a month or a year. I would love to go back and work on more restoration.

When I was a contractor doing the lighthouse restoration we had to live on the 38th fishing boat. I found that putting a old 16 lb bowling ball from the thrift store. With a screw eye. Yes we could hold that boat in that crappy Anchorage without drifting. And the Cuban captains will give you fish in exchange for beer. They like Budweiser but better beer is preferred. Rum everybody likes that

We went to the Dry Tortugas in February of this year. Water was a bit cooler and the waves were up, but still had an amazing time snorkeling and exploring the park. The ferry ride was all inclusive, unless you wanted to buy souvenirs or alcohol. And yes make sure you make your reservations early! We reserved about 4 months in advance of our trip and did not get the day we wanted, but our "alternate". We stayed on Duvall street and enjoyed the walkability and the night life. We did not do it, but spending the night camping at the fort would also look to be an amazing experience !

I did the restoration of the little black lighthouse on the top of the fort back around 98. We had Cuban fisherman in the harbor all the time they came and went as they please. During that time there wasn't much Boat Lift stuff going on. It's a beautiful place and I can see where it would be strategic to protect the Gulf of Mexico even today if a foreign country got it it would be bad for America and shipping in the Gulf of Mexico.

My husband and I took that trip; years ago before it got too expensive. We went with The Yankee Freedom Fleet which is closed now. They actually set up a buffet, with sandwiches, potato salad, etc. for our lunch. It's so beautiful out there. I know that the cost of fuel for the boats has gone up, but $200 per person is ridiculous for a National Park. I think it was $75 when we went.

Went this year- took the seaplane. Wasn't THAT much more expensive, beautiful flight, pretty cool stepping off the plane onto the sand. Only had about 3 hours on the island, but 10 people on the plane, had the place to ourselves until the boat with 100 people showed up after we'd been there for 2 hours. Place is super interesting, beautiful water to snorkel in. Highly recommend the trip. We were spending a lot of time on boats on this vacation, so 5-6 hours on the tour boat didn't seem appealing. Made it back to Key West for lunch! Go if you get the chance.

As a person from the Midwest, no snorkeling experience . I went on the ferry they said there are milk sharks but nothing to worry about . Stay near the sea wall. So I was seeing amazing fish like in Drs offices back home they were huge. Then I saw a fin. I saw it again it circled omg it’s JAWS! I’m going be eaten. So I did a flip turn off the sea wall. And broke the ft Jefferson record swimming back to wear I could stand. There were people standing on the sea wall pointing. They informed me that it was a barracuda whew I thought it was a shark. On the ferry back people pointed out that barracudas were real mean. Dr. Mud was imprisoned there. He treated Lincoln’s assassin. He didn’t know that this man had killed Lincoln. He knew the man had a broken leg.

The expensive mistake was the money and resources spent building the dry tortugas fort - only to have it be abandoned with all the logistical issues

The fort was not completed because settling caused the water cisterns to crack and be unusable and during the Civil War rifled cannons we're developed that could breech a brick fort.

As of Oct filming in national parks and posting to RU-vid or tictoc and other places that make revenue is now a federal crime sad because there are so many places that we find out about from watching videos like this

It’s not a federal crime if you have a permit. Check the NPS website for more details on the new regulations.

OMG! $200 per person to ride the boat out there and back. That is not fair to make a killing off a national park that should be available for everybody to see.

Yes, it is expensive, but when a 2 1/2 hour boat ride is required, that is a costly operation, I imagine they can’t do more than one round trip per day.

@@esthers5772 I agree with you but my point is that it will take away from the family or person that wants to go see it or think about their budget being way over blown.
@mikefromholt8791
@mikefromholt8791 Год назад
@@esthers5772 yes, only one round trip per day. They do give plenty of time to explore the fort and to snorkle, or swim. You can also pack in your camping gear and stay on the island on the grounds outside the fort. However, you will need to pack in EVERYTHING including water. As for cost, 70 miles, I'm guessing that's a lot of fuel to be burned off. Plus, there's a crew for the boat( I think 10?), staff at the port in Key West, port fees, so the cost is probably justified.

The back story on this place is a lie, and here is the proof. 16,000,000 bricks set in a 4 year span, would be 40,000 tons of bricks, total, with 27.3 tons of brick set, every day, 365 days a year. Now before, you set a single one, the whole island had to be leveled and shaped in a perfect, hexagonal shape, the moat constructed, and footings in place. Now, we also know that the southern people built all of their homes, barn, outbuildings and textile mills, etc. out of wood, but somehow, while these people were gearing up for the civil war, they found a source for the bricks (Maine of all places), skilled labor force, (slaves, is what the educated ones say) and the logistical supply chain, that was transporting all the men, food, water, bricks and mortar, etc. to the island. You can believe that if you like, but the truth is, we could not build that in 4 years today. In fact, there is no construction company that could commit to such a remote location to build. It is insanity now, and it would have been worse, in 1847. Much worse. Just don't believe it please?
