We went to Offkai 2024! - Mint & Matara Episode 11  

The story of Matara's boasting about not drinking reminds me of my mother. She was a big Coca-Cola drinker and one time she quit cold turkey. Every phone conversation for the next few months was "I don't know what I liked about it to begin with" and "It just tastes awful." Then one night she had some at a restaurant and never stopped drinking it again. I guess her fortitude was as solid as jelly.

Matara's talk about the importance of being well-rested for the con events, culminating in the hypothetical, "what if you won a meet-and-greet with me, and I was just dead-tired/hungover" instantly reminded me of a dream I had a few years ago. In the dream, I was given an opportunity for a 1-on-1 meet-and-greet + gaming session with an oshi. It wasn't something I'd purposely signed up for, and I was like, "It's fine if I don't do this, she's probably busy/tired/has more important things to do etc, I don't want to waste her time, don't want her to feel obligated to put on the "entertainer" mask just for my nobody ass etc. But I had to do the M&G, because the dream makes the rules, not me. And the M&G turned out exactly as I'd feared, with my oshi's desire to not be there being abundantly obvious, and I felt like garbage for wasting her time. Even after waking up, I felt bad despite it not even being real lol. This dream was so uniquely unpleasant, it's burned into my memory, even several years later lmao. I remember seeing Mint cutting out stickers for the panel on Twitter, and being jelly of the people who got to go. I was trying to decide which of my possessions I'd put the sticker on if I got one. The idea of people taking their ultra-limited 1st edition Minto sticker and just slapping it on the underside of some random con furniture is unthinkable- it's mind-boggling! Clearly I still have much to learn about you humans. Wishing y'all get well soon, and I hope you've been able to salvage some good experiences from the trip despite things not going according to plan.

I just saw a short of Patrick Stewart talking about being greeted by a standing ovation of 2k people at their first Star Trek con. Hearing that this group had 1k ready and waiting for them is super heartwarming and totes respectable. More power to you Mint and Matara!

Just wanting to say as one of the guys who was at Offkai. I was really super happy to meet you two at the panel and the robot on the final day. Was super bummed out that I wasn’t able to win the lottery and the fcfs. But getting to talk to you two and show you the awesome Henya belt me and maeriette made me the most happiest ever on that day which made Offkai the funniest con I’ve been in years. I am a bit late to listening to this one but thank you for sharing your Offkai experience, I am kind of "Jelly" that you were able to go as I was unable to make it. I really enjoy listening to the both of you yap, it is always a great start to my day since new episodes come out in the morning for my time zone.

It's kinda funny. I didn't realise that the ladies were just PNGs until halfway through, not because I wasn't paying attention, but because at this point I can picture their movements and expressions when they talk so well in my head that my mind just kinda filled it in while they weren't moving. Or maybe all this time in the VTuber rabbit hole has just turned my brain to jelly.

I’m glad I got to be at Offkai this year and not be jelly with fomo! I loved your panel and I was so worried I wouldn’t have made it inside once I saw the line outside! Your podcast is a ton of fun and I’m glad I was in that fun crowd. You both vibe so well with the crowd but also I have no idea why the crowds at a lot of the panels decided to do monkey chants lol. Also just as a KFP myself I loved how many of us showed up and I loved seeing how many also supported y’all. Wish I got a meet and greet with either of you two or Kiara but I know the odds were probably crazy. Loved hearing how Mint you took pictures for Kiara and also how you both loved her performance. It was a blast on Saturday despite how insanely long the line was with there being a full house that day! I didn’t even go back on Sunday because I was so dang tired after Saturday lol. Too bad I also caught COVID even though I had only had 1 really bad sick day oof. Thanks for being such good friends to Kiara and also just glad to see y’all had a fun time. I would love to see y’all again next year for sure!

The one thing OffKai forced me to recognize is that I need new glasses. Driving was more precarious than I would have preferred, and I literally missed my kamioshi sitting directly in front of me! Also my mustache wax the first day wasn't put on very well, because I was late even getting out of bed. Actually that too: I was late the _whole_ convention. (It's Clubman brand wax, and it's not difficult to put on if you have an idea of how to do it. It comes out a little wet (not like jelly, just kinda moist), and dries beyond being able to do things with it quickly, but then you want to leave it a while to properly dry. Above all else, don't not use a mirror. Foggy mirror from after a shower does not count.) Luckily it was better by the second day, because I went home and redid it, but then I was late getting back for the soundcheck! I think I actually saw the bus that I missed _right_ as it was leaving, and I was all the way up a flight of stairs at Millbrae. Luckily soundcheck had kinda barely started when I got there, iirc. (I hope I practiced enough. I know there were a lot of tenors so I was probably drowned out, but they were fun songs and I wanted to do well for my first ever real singing performance.)

Like quite a bit of wisps, still a bit jelly from missing out on Offkai since we are a continent apart, but glad those who went had probably the greatest time they have ever had at a convention! Thank you for this weeks Podcast! I went to offkai and it was a blast, definitely a bit small due to the massive Jelly amount of attendees but it was much more fun than I anticipated. I got to get the stickers and the signed post card and met online friends

Glad to hear you guys had a good time at Offkai and got to meet so many fans (even if one of those fans was microscopic and lacks personal space awareness) I'm in Britain so I couldn't go, kinda JELLY 🥲 Also, dunno if Matara saw it, but that guy talking about painting Tyranids in her colour scheme before reminded me that I recently uploaded something on the Twitters, a legally distinct Tyranid/Xenomorph bug lady that I painted in Matara's colours. Think it came out pretty good if I do say so myself! The pink and white tones work really well, not the edgey palette I usually go for lol

Conventions (V-Tuber conventions specifically) feel like such an out or reach thing for me, be it due to time, funds and location so I always appreciate when the events can be streamed in some way. Offkai did good on that regard (would say great, but I heard things weren't so great for everyone). I'm glad I could experience even a bit of it and I'm super happy you two had so much fun on it. And yeah, maybe these days weren't so great for you, maybe you two are feeling like jelly wobbling all around the room but the great weeks will come eventually. Just take this as a chance for having a chill break and focus on getting better. Plenty of summer days left on the year!

@1:17:00 - I think the best thing to do going forward would be to get the address of the hotel and see if you can find room pictures on google for that address. If possible, it's usually going to be a lot more accurate than trusting the websites, as those might not update. I should know, I worked at four different hotels that had undergone renovations and they did not update their own website. They usually left it to corporate, who never bothered to show up.
