Man, we slept in France at a Brits AirBnB and it was the same damn thing! Don't know why that is, but these islanders even seem to export these weird locks. 😉😅
Old metal minis were accessible in ways that modern stuff just can't match. As proven in this video, a talented group could sculpt and cast minis for sale in a very short period of time with minimal equipment. This made them cheap to buy and allowed the designers a lot of room for whimsy, so all sorts of silliness made it to the market. 3D printing is allowing for a bit of a renaissance of this, though not so much for the young hobbyist. Most 12 year olds can't just buy and run a 3D printer, but they could buy a lead mini from a shop with pocket money back in the day. Late 80's early 90's were such a golden age of fantastic minis that were really affordable, even for a young, mostly broke me.
Wow, John Blanche! He is such a legend. His art is so good! I find it suprising that his artwork wasn't used more often for metal covers. I only know that Sabbat and Bolt Thrower used it once or twice.
Big events tend to be about drumming up business (creating hype for new product). It seems this event was more about the joy and love of gaming (i.e. why we got into this hobby in the first place). Both have their place. The nostalgia of playing older games can bring back the delight of being 'fresh' in the hobby. Seeing new releases can inspire you to keep going. I'm glad you had a wonderful birthday, and hope it inspires you to keep doing what you're doing... :)
A whole event celebrating that most precious of metals!? I must learn more! Oh wow, what a cool day that must have been. Those GW artists and sculptors were the heart and soul of the my love affair with old Warhammer. ❤️ Kindred spirits, 👍
I remember seeing Warhammer for the first time in the 80s. Must have been the first ever edition. I also saw the fantasy game. I thought it was adorable but didn't give it much thought. All these years later and I paint armies and enjoy Space Marines and your nostalgic trip made you feel all warm and happy. And that is the entire point of it all. You had this giant smile constantly.
Fully understand what you mean. Modern Warhammer feels as though it is aimed towards perfectly painted miniatures that have to be painted a specific way and you can only build them a specific way otherwise they are illegal and you can’t put a certain weapon on a certain model. The reason I fell in love with it originally was because i could spend my Saturdays at my local store painting something however I wanted. Games were wacky and not serious. I miss those times
What an awesome event - your bubbly personality and infectious enthusiasm made your coverage so much better. Next year, I’d love to see a much longer video of the event and coverage of games -(although I know this would be a lot of work and your enjoyment of such a fun event would suffer, so forget that idea). This video seemed like it only lasted a couple of minutes, so I watched it several times and thoroughly enjoyed each one - great work. I still have my original Space Marines, Orcs and Gretchen from more than 20 years ago and they are still engaging in skirmishes in my retirement (although its getting harder to find games for “Old” Warhammer these days). Love your work 👍😃🇦🇺
I'd never even heard of BOYL before seeing your video, Louise, but it looks like heaven on earth! I get so nostalgic for old, metal minis from Games Workshop. It takes me back to my 16th birthday in 1998, when I went and bought Gary Morley's original Nagash sculpt, then raced home to paint it. I hope to meet the legend himself one day, and thank him for creating an Undead range with so much character (and, dare I say it, humor!). Thank you for sharing your endearing geekiness, enthusiasm, and warmth for these weird, whimsical old miniatures, Louise! It's comforting to know that there are others out there who feel the same as I do about them!
There is so much that is just genuine about your videos and your love and enjoyment of the hobby. Thank you for sharing this event, never knew it existed and I’m so happy that you were to just go and have fun. Have an amazing weekend! 😁 #RoguesRule
That honestly sounds like a very nice and just the kind on event that the hobby needs. Glad to hear that those exist, even if they exist on a distant rain soaked island.
I love Oldhammer and this is my hometown, how did I never hear about this before? Will definitely be attending this year! Thanks for letting me know about it!
I recently dug out my 2nd Edition Eldar Warhost to repaint after having been in storage for nearly 25 years. Found some metal Imperial Guard, included Rogue Trader era troopers. This video and your genuine enthusiasm perfectly captures that same feeling of rediscovered joy. Thank you.
@@roguehobbies Best bit was of course being in a place full of people who get excited about such things. Honestly, I think BOYL was just about the friendliest place I've been to.
That is so cool, was down that way for the motogp that weekend and stopped by WW on the way back up home on Monday but this seems like a much more fun Saturday than being soaked and freezing watching motorbikes. It makes me glad people can live vicariously through youtube and learn about cool new things, maybe next year.
Nice to see someone enjoying themselves so much with the simple things in life 😊 You don’t need the latest and greatest expensive stuff to have a great time 👍
Having been involved with miniatures since the early 90's, having gone to local cons for years, and been part of a gaming group a long time that played whatever silly fun games that came along, and been removed from that environment, I really miss it. The local con died. Our gaming group broke up and moved due to life and other reasons. And most miniatures people I meet these days are very serious, meta driven, tournament folks. That's all well and good. But I miss the beer and pretzels sort of gaming and hobbying I used to be involved in. Fun stuff for fun's sake. I'd love to go to BOYL one day. From all I have seen it's the sort of environment that I miss. Traveling to the UK is not an option for me right now though. Thank you for sharing this. It made me smile to see people doing stuff like this and having an amazing time even though they're just in a big tent in a rain storm.
As someone who sometimes tables at artist alleys and does live watercolor paintings for people- I can tell you he was probably having a BLAST. It is so fun and energizing to be creative around a lively but enthused and respectful group. I wish I could watch him work a little and ask a few questions about his tools and techniques. What a cool opportunity for attendees!
That sounds like an amazing time, would love to have an event like that Stateside. Especially if they had something for old GW, Ral Partha, and Grenadier stuff.
That's the power of conventions and other community events! As sheltered nerds that used to have to hide our hobbies, it's awesome for us to have a space to connect with others like us. It's really fulfilling.
This whole event looks so incredible, kicking myself for only hearing about it ONLY after it had ended 😅 I'm absolutely going to keep an eye out for BOYL 2024!
Sorry but the Snotling see-saw is bloody adorable! In my head after a life of being kicked around by orks, grots get to go to grot heaven that is just a massive kids playground with swings, see-saws, huge slides and a round about. Honestly, I might have to travel up north to get one.
Having collected rogue trader and 2nd ed tyranids for the past 15 years, it frustrates me immensely that I live in Australia and BOYL is in the UK. Totally jealous of you and everyone else that manages to get along each year.
Was lovely to see you there, thanks for saying hello on your walk around. Sorry I didn't get a chance to come and chat, but I was very enthralled by my own game of 2nd Ed 40k. I have to agree that Bring Out Your Lead is my favourite gaming event currently. Just such a good balance of nice people who all love the same ideals, even if everyone is playing different games it seems to have a really strong ethos of creativity and fun. This year was my second time there, I hope it'll be back and better in a new venue next year. Glad you had such a great birthday! 😃
It's so wunderful and refreshing to see you and hear you talk about that event in that happy way! And it's very, very catching 😅 I wish you so much that these feelings last a long time - even your friends are already back home! What a great video with a wonderful spirt! Thank you a lot! 🙇🏼♂️
Your videos are really inspiring me to tackle that pile of unfinished tabletop minis and paint them just for fun- even my long neglected chaos space marines someday. Thank you for this. I hope I'll have the space for it soon and I hope you'll keep going with your channel.
What a great video, I’m away from the hobby for years but thinking about dipping my toe back in, to see somebody so young and passionate enjoying the stuff I grew up with is wonderful. Might go away and dig out my paint brushes. Thank you.
Man this induced a time warp back to the late 80s!!! Seeing Epic being played, my first GW game. The cabinets of figures brought a tear to my eye with so many fond memories of what I could see in there. The old Slayers, the Snotling Pump wagon, Genestealer Cultists. Yeah, I'm 57!! Perhaps it was nostalgia too for you that gave you that buzz at this event. It looks like you had an awesome day and thanks so much for sharing this, although it was tinged with sadness at what used to be, simpler times with simpler gaming and great friends who I have lost over the years.👍👍😉
Never played or knew about warhammer in my younger days, and now after falling into the miniature painting hobby to handle my depression, this is now on my bucket list, thank you. Dont know uf ill ever play, but definitely won't stop painting.
The video of this event hit me in the feels. Reminded me why i have a couple of boxes of old mini's and a couple of shelves of books ive kept for over 25 years 😂
FULL TILT!!! Currently building a board for that game, and just picked up some knights and civilians from Foundry for it too so this video is a nice conincidence :)
BOYL is good for the soul, loved my visits in '18 and '19 . Full of friendly hardcore Olhammer enthusiasts in the best of settings. Foundry are a great company, many of my historical armies are full of their miniatures.
Looks to me part of the appeal is the lo-fi nature of it. Pretty cool seeing old school miniatures like that in the cabinets. I remember the Genestealer Patriarch, Magus and hybrids were for Space Hulk first edition.
Wow, love this video, I love everything warhammer and started in warhammer fantasy battle many moons ago, this event looks fantastic I never knew it existed and I,d love to go one day. Thanks for show casing what our hobby is all about, wonderful characterful minis, and spending time with friends who love our hobby too, brilliant!!!!!
Location wise definitely a great place. It's next a place known as the red gutter after so much blood was spilled there during the last major battle of the war of the roses. The place was also a leper colony at one point.
That event looks so cool, very envious stuck out here in Australia. I think the thing that really draws me into oldhammer is the same feeling that old movies with practical effects elicit. I'd much rather watch some Henson puppets than most of the cgi fests of the last few years
I feel that it's because things were hand crafted, and so building these things was a *deliberate* act. It took time, so people used that time to do it in a way they would be proud of. Modern CG aided sculpting (and special effects) are just a "get it done fast" thing where they meet a minimum standard (admittedly, sometimes that standard is fairly high) and move on to the next things. And the result is that everything looks the same, because they meet that standard and put in no further effort to make it memorable.
This is a great example of what I love about the English countryside / areas away from the cities. People just living and going about their days amidst very old/ancient buildings, towns/etc. Makes my old archeologist @$$ smile!
You do realise that you have just wrecked this 'intimate' event! Your excitement has made sure that it will be mobbed next year. But seriously this looked amazing.
I just found your channel and have binged all your videos and look forward to seeing such wonderful content from you from now on. Your love for it all is so wholesome and incredible to see. Thank you for being yourself and making me dig through my cupboard for my oldest minis and want to paint them again, I came here as a scale modeller and artist and ex war gamer and mini painter and leave here enthused to get mini again.
The only time I visited England so far back in 2011, the main destination was a visit to Warhammer HQ in Nottingham, if I ever get a chance to go back there, this is definitely going to be the main objective destination! 😊
First, happy birthday! what a fun way to spend it. I discovered Games Workshop back in the late 80's, and have painted and played their games on and off since. I'd have been on cloud nine at an event like this. So many images you showed stirred up some amazing old memories of the love of the hobby I've had for well over 30 years! The big fat genestealer patriarch on the throne especially!! Wonderful video - thank you!
Cool to know that you and your friends enjoyed yourselves, playing, talking and looking at old stuff which continues to inspire new stuff. See you next year.
Were there any printed minis there? I've found a few sculptors who are making very oldhammeresque designs for printing. Knucklebones miniatures is particularly excellent.
Looks like it was a lot of fun. Good to see Ian Brumby getting his face in there a couple of times too :) (gotta love Ian) I'll have to see if I can get Anthony up there next year. And a belated "Happy Birthday" 🙂
Thank you for highlighting this event. I did not know anything about it and being a fan on RT 40K and 40K 2nd Edition I think this would be a good event to attend. Only a couple of hours drive for me so hopefully will go next year.
I’m so glad you enjoyed boyl as much as you did, it’s great to see new enthusiasm fans every year, and ones with a real passion for it too! It really is something to look forward to, and i have been attending since the pandemic return to meet up with friends, and we always have an amazing time. And trust me, it doesn’t always rain 😅. It’s in a different place next year. Still nearby, but equally as nice so I’ve been told.
Glad to know youre a squats collector / general too, Louise (Sugs.) This event woul've been such a nerdgasm for me. I must paint Grendl Grendlson and his fellow stunty guys that are a fond throw back to classic squats. I must google BOYL and maybe I'll get my worthless behind to a future event to meet you awesome guys and nerd out on old minatures and old games.
