Our family visited Arecibo Observatory to see the 1,000-foot radio-telescope constructed in a sinkhole in the karst region of western Puerto Rico during a vacation in April 2008. The colossal radio-telescope and its visitors center offered a fascinating exploration of space for my two science-minded kids.
So when we heard that it collapsed last year, we booked tickets as soon as the facility reopened to see how it looks now. The difference is incredible!

The Arecibo Observatory is a facility of the National Science Foundation operated under a cooperative agreement by the University of Central Florida.

When people talk, they talk as if this telescope was in operation when it collapsed. Arecibo was decommissioned years before the collapse.

Have you been able to see the statue that’s touted to be even bigger than the Statue of Liberty? No one has posted about it. The controversy around it is not lost on me. 🤔

No idea what you're referring to. Unless it's the Columbus statue that is at the north end of Arecibo near the ocean.

15 years back I used to work on SETI@home project; most of the data packets that i used were collected by AT and over a period of those 5 years i developed deep affection for Arecibo. Last year, my hreat broke when i watched the video of arecibo going down on youtube. It is was one of saddest days of my life; the broken disk is a grim reminder of the fact that nothing is permanent. The lone towers imply the law of the universe that perhaps mankind will never live forever nor it will ever be able to create something that will. I wish if I could get to visit Arecibo, VLA and VLT in my life time as my last pilgrimage in search of "hope for mankind". BTW thank yiu for posting video.
