We were hoping to get more rain, but got this instead

This week we had so many different kinds of weather it was hard to keep up. We started with some rain, which meant we could sow some rye into our newly tilled field. After the rain we had two days of a Saharan desert sand storm, which covered everything in yellow dust. Then came the wind. Through all this I did manage to do some things, like mulching the potatoes that were coming up and potting on some of the tomatoes.

New here? My name is Lea and I live with my partner Maarten, our toddler Puck and baby Bo on our land in Central Portugal. We left the rat race in the Netherlands in 2018 and moved south in our old campervan. Two years ago we bought land in Portugal that had been abandoned for several decades. After lots of hard work we now live in a beautiful yurt and keep ourselves busy growing our own vegetables as well as producing olive oil, wine and honey on a small scale. This channel documents all the different jobs we have to do, and sometimes some nice footage of this beautiful country we now call home. Want to see more updates? Don't forget to subscribe!

Hello from Philadelphia, Pa USA..I love watching gardening videos ! I also find it funny when you completely stop and look at bo for a few seconds like ( what's he doing?) Good luck with the planting holes , you could put the screening over them that you took down from the seedling area so no vermin or dogs get to them? I put rocks or wood over these areas so the birds don't dig them up. Pumpkins are heavy feeders so the more fertilizer (poop. seaweed liquid, compost the better) pile it all around the plant. I think it should work if they are well fed.

Hazel ☘️ … I’m surprised to see the dust so far north … it is commonplace every year in southern Spain … it gets into everything from your machinery to your body ! … breathing this in is difficult for your lungs to keep clear … I mentioned on another vlog to wear a mask … is used masks during these periods in southern Spain and honestly depending on how long I was out working in it the masks were filthy and needed changing frequently ! Great to see the tilled land … a good decision after a couple of years observation , I hope the barley takes off and in a year or so that land will be great for growing all sorts of stuff ! 🙏☘️😘

Wonderful to see you. I am so glad you have the rain. It is so dry here. I put my first four tomatoes out yesterday. I cover the cage with a plastic bag that keeps them from freezing and often will have a tomato by May if I do a good job with it. I don't think I moved the bags I recycle to use or at least I can't find them. It is OK to laugh at me here 🙃. I hope big pumpkins do well as I save them for my chickens in winter too. They are excellent chicken food. Even if they freeze, they will eat them up. I have a big bowl of the seeds mixed together in the kitchen so I am adding them to my garden in hope the chickens do not dig them all up and eat them. We are in spring today , happy gardening to you all.

I love your videos, Lea. I hope all your hard work gardening pays off well. Your babies are so cute and sweet. I can understand living off grid and out on the farm can be a struggle, especially when it comes to doing laundry. I hang most of our things out on the clothesline when the weather is nice. That helps keep electricity bill down. We live on a tight budget. I can't remember if I explained to you already that we have a pretty large garden, goats, and chickens. It keeps us busy. I have already canned a lot of vegetables. Also, put some things in the freezer. I do dehydrating also. I made dill pickles last week and already have enough to make more. There is always something to do as you know. I wish you all many blessings. Janice from Arkansas USA

More batteries is the key. We’re keeping things as they are right now, it’s not too bad just a bit inconvenient sometimes. When your pumpkins get their first flowers, those are the males. When they get the female flowers (you can tell because they have a bulbous part at the bottom of the flower where it meets the stem), do your bees come there to pollinate them? If not, you can hand pollinate with a little paint brush by picking up some pollen from the inside of a male flower, then brushing it inside the female flowers. This will assure fruit development. I can't wait to see the Pennsylvania Cinderella pumpkins growing in beautiful Portugal!
@ourportuguesehomestead
@ourportuguesehomestead 2 года назад
We have no problems with pollination, there are many many bees around. The issue with the pumpkins here is the heat, the drought and the soil (which we are working on).

We get lots of dirty rain here (Montenegro)especially in the summer, car wash companies love it:(( Perhaps you might make paper pots ( look at You Can't Eat The Grass, they use them for the seedlings to sell), simple to make, put a bunch of them in a crate and plant the seedling together with it in the ground. A bit of work in advance, but not much really and you don't have to use plastic:)))

After you take it out of the washing machine you have to let the ‘ wet ‘ laundry rest. F.e. a t-shirt I detangle the sleeves and fold the shirt over once, prev over the stomach but not important 😜 try layering everything as flat as possible on top of each other. It doesn’t need more than 10-15 min, hang up everything and in my opinion most of it wil pass my 👍🏼 doesntneedtobeironed inspection 😂 Please don’t take this advice the wrong way, you’re doing an amazing job anyway 🥰 I have been so grateful for this tip myself I try to share it as much as possible 🙋🏽‍♀️

We've been burying kitchen scraps in soil; so the new compost is several inches below the surface, and have less issues with critters trying to carry it away. It's harder in these low water times though. I guess here in the Southern California desert, we should water the compost! Perhaps it will process instead of mummifying. Wasn´t the "Calima" (dessert sand) awful? Here in Spain we got the worst of it, I believe and everything was coated in a thick layer of dust. Riding to Madrid my traction control warning light actually came on a couple of times on the bends as the road was so slippery from it! Glad the wind brought some rain so the air is a bit clearer.

The phenomenon of "migrating" desert sand in southern Portugal must be part of its ecological makeup. So I wonder what minerals are in the sand, or other micronutrients. Or maybe it's just inert and contributes to Portuguese soil types. Do you know? I'm in northern Tuscany in Italy, so no aerosolized sand currents here (most likely in southern Italy though). However, in the late summer we get the season where African air currents make it unbearably hot, hard to breathe, and it lasts for more than a week or two depending on the year. Italians literally take all of August off. Everything shuts down. Ferragosto it's called. I think this is because of the African air current phenomenon that clearly is an annual weather pattern. It is so like the Italian culture to make the best use of the extreme heat. In fact they love it. I have Celtic ancestry, so foggy, green, hilly climes are my preference haha.

I’m not sure what kind of nutrients the sand bring. This sand comes every now and then, but this time it was unusually much and for longer. I love the heat in the summer, can’t wait for it to be back

Saharan sandstorms bring that dust all the way across the ocean to the Amazon basin in S. America. It's what makes that basin into a jungle as the underlying soils are actually really poor (except for the man-made pockets of terra preta). This is why slash & burn practices there are bad, once the vegetation is removed, the erosion of fertile topsoil leaves behind nothing but the really poor subsoil underneath, and it won't regrow without a lot of help. Yes, it's amazing that the winds from the African continent can carry dust so far, but once it's in the atmosphere, the air brings it all over the earth.

I assume you have read Permaculture I and Permaculture II, there are various Permaculture Design manuals. May I suggest you read P.A. Yeomans work, his book “Water for Every Farm” encapsulates a lot of his work, which is really for broad acre farming, but he talks about moisture retention and soil health. Probably another book you should read is Fukuyama, “One Straw Revolution”

Hi Leah, thanks for the video. Pumpkins are not so hard to plant here in South Africa. And that scorsie pumpkins are small, round and very 'hard' to cut sometimes. We cut it in half. Put some little butter, cinnamon and sugar. Or we put creamy corn in and back it with some cheese on top. That's yummy. The earth worms my dad always told us is the underground 🚜🚜. 😅 They very good for the ground. Hope all your planting will be blessed. It's the first time I hear about that dust there in Portugal. Jig that can't be nice. I really thought it was misty. Love the farm feeling. Take care. Can't wait to see all you pumpkins. Greetings Melinda from South-Africa 💕
