The problem with football are the tackles. When your body gets hit hart by something heavy, like being tackled by a quarterback, your brain will bounce inside your skull due to the impact. Your brain is not connected to your skull and actually floats around a bit. Helmet or no helmet your brain will still bounce against your head on the inside. Usually that is not to bad if it happens once or twice a year. But football players get hit hart on a daily basis. So over the years the constant bashing of the brain leads to permanent brain damage. And no helmet in the world could fix that issue.

some insight: the reason kickoffs are so much more dangerous is because players are running at each other from opposite ends of the field, as opposed to any other play or a punt where they're lined up from the line of scrimmage. The momentum and speed is increased on kickoffs

I could see kickoffs being the most dangerous plays in football due to how far apart the 2 teams are and then they just run full speed at each other and collide. Don't think any other plays would allow as much force to build up prior to the hit then the kickoffs, but then again I'm not overly familiar with the game so I could be mistaken.

What doesn't make sense is why American football helmets are made of metal. Why not have just padded headgear like (some) rugby and Australian football players wear. Then the helmet itself isn't causing damage
