Fixing a recoil that's weak and slow to return/retract the starter rope on this Honda GCV160 (on a Husqvarna HU 700F 961450006-01), but would apply to many different brands of machines. Recoil style is the same used on Honda GCV190 engines as well.
recoil repair, remove starter recoil, remove starter rope, clean and inspect recoil, clean rusted recoil spring, lubricate recoil, install starter rope, replace starter rope, reassemble recoil, install recoil, gcv160, gcv190

Great video. For as many years as I’ve been working on this stuff, recoil starters are the one thing I seem to have the least success with. Usually I find broken, missing or warped pieces inside and it’s not worth screwing around with them since replacements are cheap and plentiful. This was very helpful, I’d much rather save the original if it’s all there than replace it with a cheap aftermarket knock-off.

I know it’s bad to do but I kind of hoard mowers sometimes if I think they’re worth it. I bought a Husqvarna awd for $40 and thought it only had a carb problem. Ended up being a bad camshaft. Anyways I found another husky that was missing all kinds of parts. Took the ones off the $40 made the other one look like new and sold it for $175. Always worth keeping your stuff.

I have a hard time giving up on any of them if I know I can fix it eventually

Yeah, you gotta fix the state recoil before you can trouble shoot the rest of it. Good clean repair!

For the Husqvarna HU700F, the recoil rope typically has a small clamp-on stop (similar to a split sinker) leaving about 30” of rope that does not recoil. The reason being, the rope attaches to the mower’s handle, allowing you to crank while the blade brake lever is engaged. I realize it’s difficult to show while the handle is not attached, but wanted to point out that your hard stop is missing.

@@BackyardRepairs No problem. I have one purchased in 2005-ish. Replaced the front wheel drive belt this week and just some clean-up maintenance. It still cranks on the first or second pull. That Honda engine is like a sewing machine! I used it exclusively for 12 years on a smaller property. It’s rarely used now but it’s a keeper!
