Great tips on the actual mechanics of the shot, we practice this shot at home doing it in slow motion hitting into a pillow. One person is hitting while your partner holds a bed pillow. Helps with making sure you make contact out in front , slight rolling motion of the forearm, and it actually give you the feel of contact as well

That is an awesome way to work on this. Way to be creative and get the job done. :) love to hear stories like this.

Great information. Please tell your video editor to pay attention to audio levels. The "if you enjoyed this video" graphic has audio that is WAY too loud, and doesn't match the volume of the rest of the video. Unfortunately, this happens all the time on Primetime Pickleball, and I'm not the first person to ask for this to be addressed.

Do you hit it with a straight arm or should we bend our arm slightly? I noticed in Ben Johns video, his arm is very straight.

Glad you like it! Yes, it's a huge benefit to have this and be able to attack well from the backhand. So many people will try to pick on your backhand so if it's a threat...that's so good for you :)

I really liked the high and hard replay synced up with the low and slow so you can see that, depending on how the ball is hit at you, you should adjust your stroke. This is a difficult shot, one I miss if I don't focus and use proper form. Is it possible to hit this type of shot crosscourt deep or crosscourt short angle?

Thank you for the video - very informative. How do you change the grip? Do you just do it without the other hand's help? How do you change it quickly? How do we practice changing our grip? I don't think I know how to do that...

Great question! I may have to do a video on this. In short, I do use my left hand to help with this, but not all the time. Practicing changing your grip while drilling with help tremendously.

At the point of contact (at 33 sec) which is below the top of the net I think you will find that the paddle face is slightly open. I believe this is essential otherwise this shot cannot be hit over the net. Note that a neutral or slightly closed paddle face at contact will consistently send the ball into the net.
@lizlemon9632
@lizlemon9632 3 года назад
Important point.
@frankfurter7260
@frankfurter7260 Год назад
Absolutely. If the paddle face is tilted down at all the ball trajectory coming off the paddle is going down. So if the contact point is when ball is below net you can not hit it over the net if the paddle is tilted down AT ALL.

Hi Jordan, looks great but effectiveness probably depends on how fast you can change your grip?

Couple of questions, is this possible to teach to someone who has a windshield wiper backhand? What if they have a two-hander, does the top hand get the spin?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 3 года назад
You cannot hit this shot with a windshield wiper backhand. Also, I would always try to avoid hitting that shot in general. With a two handed backhand this is possible, and yes the top hand will do a lot of the work creating the spin. Riley Newman does this all the time.
@mbanford1
@mbanford1 3 года назад
At the ready position you want your left hand on the racquet in order to make a grip change, right?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 3 года назад
You don’t need to do this, but it does make it easier. Maybe to start, try this first!

At what point are you changing the grip to eastern backhand or do you hold the paddle with eastern backhand all the time?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 2 года назад
Great question! You hold the paddle in continental. As soon as you recognize that you will take it with a backhand and turn the paddle in that direction that is when you switch from the continental to eastern backhand grip by turning it with your non-hitting hand.

Do you find lighter weight paddles are easier to execute this shot compared to to heavier paddles?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 3 года назад
With a lighter paddle, you can create fast paddle speed due to the weight. So on medium and high balls, you can create a lot of spin and pace. I like to use a light paddle.

I’m thinking there is too much back swing...and therefore room for error.
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 3 года назад
There is definitely more room for error, as this is an advanced shot. Although once you get it down, it can make a huge difference in your game.
@paulmcdevitt2038
@paulmcdevitt2038 3 года назад
PrimeTime Pickleball Ben Johns uses this a lot. But always after the opponent has been moved aside so bigger margin to hit target and the extra speed is enough to get past them before they recover.
@paulmcdevitt2038
@paulmcdevitt2038 3 года назад
Are you suggesting changing to Eastern just before playing the shot and back to Continental after? Or use Eastern permanently? Eastern would make forehand topspin much harder, right?
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 3 года назад
Eastern ONLY for this shot. I change grips often, just like the majority of high level players do.

JW Johnson's backhand volley (punch?topspin?) is really powerful. He's done it several times in this gold match. Watch it at 7:38:03 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QOEWfpTVXx0.html Can you teach this shot, Jordan?

That’s probably a combination of a punch and topspin volley. Powerful and strong wrist. Maybe we’ll cover it in an upcoming video.

If you’re using an eastern BH grip how can you hit a FH volley. And don’t tell me you have time to switch grips during a fast net battle. 🙄
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball Год назад
If your opponent is at the baseline you do have time for a grip change to continental or Easter FH. If they're up at NVZ line then the do both out of continental or close to it.
@frankfurter7260
@frankfurter7260 Год назад
Yes, you have time at the baseline. I said net battle. The grip you demonstrate in the video is great for hitting that roll BH volley but very awkward to hit a FH volley so do you use that grip during a net battle? If no, make it clear. If yes, then the video I’d like to see is not this artificial setup with a player hitting groundies from the baseline to your BH volley but you at the net with you using that grip and another players(s) at the net speeding the ball up to your BH AND FH without you knowing where it’s coming.
@aharrisman
@aharrisman 3 года назад
I hope my question is not too off base, but I noticed that you spin your paddle in your hand, every once in a while. Is that a conscience act? You make it look very natural, but I cannot do it. Is that paddle spin something that you have practiced? People want to know.
@primetimepickleball
@primetimepickleball 3 года назад
Lol. This is a result and habit from years and years of tennis. I carried it on to pickleball. Totally unnecessary, but now that I think of it, it can be a good practice drill to train for quickly finding the different grips!
