Container Shipping Around South Africa (Cape of Good Hope) Temporarily Suspended Due to Weather
What's Going on With Shipping?
July 12, 2024
In this Behind The Scenes (BTS) episode, Sal Mercogliano - a maritime historian at Campbell University (@campbelledu) and former merchant mariner - reports on the disruption caused by storms in the Southern Ocean due to storms and its impact on global shipping, particularly the Container sector.

I'm South African and a sailor. Our coast is not for sissies. A rocky coastline, 5 knot current and big storms pushing against that current can overwhelm good ships. I lived in the city of durban overlooking the harbour as a child. One of my favourite things was to go down to the harbour on the weekend to see progress on the repair of ships which had limped in with their bows missing etc. Much later in life I was crewing on a 48' sailing yacht when we were caught out 2 days from the nearest harbour in one of those storms. We were lucky to have survived knocked down innumerable times , taking on water and a panicked crew. We got through it, but it took 2 weeks to get back to seaworthy condition, followed by hauling it out when we reached Cape Town.

Thanks Sal. I live in Durban on the East Coast and this is our "best weather in the world" time of year. The temperatures around mid twenties (C) during the day, low humidity, low wind and clear skies. The cold fronts hitting the Cape slide off the Cape of Good Hope to the east. However, in the next month this will end and as the weather pattern shifts into Spring the fronts start to hug the east coast and we get hammered abit with rain and winds as the temperatures and humidity start to rise. Wishing you better weather and an enjoyable trip. ❤

What you say about the southern ocean rolling waves is true . I learned that the hard way . Nearly lost my left arm to a heavy winch line as just such a storm was starting up . Medivacked at 2am from a deck as the storm peaked . My reminder ( scar ) I call my Bass Strait tattoo. I also recall other times watching the deck flex as the bow dipped into the waves and wondered if we would make it .Sometimes I miss it and sometimes I don`t.

On your first video about the diversion around the Cape I made a comment to the effect that things would be interesting come the southern winter months. The expertise of navigators has diminished over the years of sunshine routes across the Indian Ocean to the Gulf of Aden…………………….. when I first went to sea in the early 1970’s there was a spate of severe damage to much smaller ships in the huge standing waves of the Agulhas Current. Even more recently winter storms have claimed several container ships anchored in Table Bay whose crews were not expecting the very rapid weather changes that occur down around the South African coast.

I was wondering why all those ships didn't decide to wait out the storm in Cape Town or PE or tried to cross cape town before the storms. We had a months notice of these storms. Our weather service in early June said we would have an abnormaly warm June then in July get cold stormy weather. This is not the 19th Century, shipments can be planned. If you travel close to the coast of South Africa you miss the bigger warm front storms but can time the cold fronts more or less. I fact, they are already tracking low pressure cells of the coast of South America the will reach our coast in the next 2 weeks. All I am saying, unlike tropical cyclones, the midlatitude low pressure cells in the southern hemisphere can be planned for.

The Galaxy was sailing from Spain to Tanzania. The ship had not even rounded the Cape Of Good Hope but did face our worst winter storm in many a year, swells 10 to 12 meters for about 2 days with strong winds would have made it a challenge for any ship sailing down the coast during the period 8th to the 10th of July 2024. The Galaxy is wrecked on the west coast of South Africa, about 270km from Cape Point. The Galaxy heading South would have faced the swell on its starboard bow, and a wind of between 20 and 40 knots on its starboard beam. Quite challenging but not impossible. Unfortunately for Galaxy the only shelter would have been St Helena Bay, some 160km further south at the time of its distress.

1:40 - This illustrates the need for a strong cable running straight across the width of both ends of each stack, reasonably high up. Might be hard to get the cables up there, but some smart engineer might come up with a practical method. You can see that there are some diagonal cables, but they are clearly inadequate. They are at a very high angle, which makes them much less effective in stabilizing the stack.

evidently the ships aren't responsible for the cargo they are carrying. If they were the tops of the stacks would be fastened together. They are not only causing losses for their customers, they are causing navigation hazards for other vessels and should be held liable for any damages but unfortunatly that would be hard to prove. They should be REQUIRED to secure the tops of the stack and pay a heavy fine for "missing" containers that their paying customers don't receive.

Who else wants to see Sal reenact the SNL musical skit “I’m on a boat!”. Seriously though yup winter was inevitable in the southern hemisphere and its impact on shipping has to be considered. I’m sitting here wondering if reports I’ve heard of Egypt trying to restart the negotiations between Hamas and Israel, so they can push for traffic to come back through the Suez are related. In other words: its a small world and something happening on one end of the globe definitely impacts events much further away than most of us suspect.

Container Shipping was much smaller in that period in both size of ships and numbers.
@donaldduck4888
@donaldduck4888 23 дня назад
@@wgowshipping Of course, hence my comment about boxships being more vulnerable. Back then it was tankers, which had got to first generation VLCCs, bulkers, and the hopelessly inefficient collection of little general cargo ships which containerisation has ushered out. The impression I had from your video is that the bulkers and tankers are having no particular problems with the Cape route (and indeed I remember sending tankers that way for economic reasons back in the dire tanker days of 1980 without any grumbles from the skippers) but the issue is with the huge stacks on the big boxships. And of course the Ben Franklin which you quoted is one of the enormous post Panamaxes These now have LOA and beam dimensions which are now pretty close to the largest ULCCs ever built, but with a very different air draft. Hence my speculation that the big boxships are more vulnerable to extreme weather.

I have never served on a container ship, nor would want to. The loading of of a vessel is normally the (enormous) responsibility of the Mate and outside of my expertise, but those containers stacked so high look precarious. I know that it would reduce the tonnage carried (and thus income) but would a pyramidal stacking be more secure from losing containers over the side in rough weather? I do realise that it would be a double whammy with both reduced cargo and increased voyage length going around the Cape, but lost containers mean lost income and higher insurance plus a possible hazard to other shipping. Hope you manage to see Alaska, Sal. I only saw it briefly at Anchorage when it was snowing.

What happens to the cargo in the containers. Do they sink or are they able to float ashore? If someone finds containers are they allowed by shipping salvage laws to keep the cargo?
