Weather Report was founded in 1970 by musicians who had met whilst playing with Miles Davis. This Montreux Festival show from 1976 follows on from the release of their album "Black Market" but features the line-up that would release their most famous and successful album "Heavy Weather" in 1977. Previously only available as a bootleg of a TV broadcast, this new DVD release is fully authorized and has been restored to its full length.

for you younger keyboard players -- notice when Zawinul plays the melody on the ARP 2600 that the keyboard scale is reversed. As he goes up, the notes go lower, as he goes down the notes go higher. Zawinul actually wrote the melody for Black Market with the ARP tuned this way. Inspiration can come from anywhere, always try crazy shit, don't be shy! (from a 40 year pro keyboard player)

Ah, I met him once! He was playing at Pasquali's on the beach in Southern California eons ago. Clare Fischer (RIP) was presenting with my then crush, sorta friend, Professor Roland Vasquez, drummer. I went to the patio out back for the break and Alex joined me out there along with the bassist, Jorge. Anyway, Alex was very a sweet spirit, but I had little idea at the time how world-class he was/is. He played all the percussion that evening. Anyway, that's that.

Glen Bledsoe Saw this tour in Hartford, Bushnell Memorial Theater, April or May 1976. Phenomenal. My second time seeing them, the first was on the tour for the Mysterious Traveller lp, fall 1974, at the same venue, with the extraordinary Alphonso Johnson on fretless & piccolo basses. Shakti featuring John McLaughlin opened this 1976 show, also amazing (I love Indian instrumental music, too. And I would go anywhere to see Johnny Mac, electric or acoustic). All my ticket stubs are currently in a storage bin, but I doubt that it cost more than $7.50 for the best seats in the house. I was in one of them, somewhere in the first ten rows, center floor. And, this was my first time witnessing the genius of (drum roll, please, Alex) Mr. Jaco Pastorius. After this concert, I made SURE it wouldn't be the last time I saw him. His playing on the title track, and "Barbary Coast", really impressed me. One of the most purely musical concerts I've ever been to. Imagine, in the same night: McLaughlin, L. Shankar, Zakir Hussain, Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, and Jaco. He was one of those people who only needed one name! As I like to say, "They just don't make 'em like this anymore...". Ps, I'll never forget hearing the homage to Joe's deceased former bandleader, that was one of the new tunes: "Cannonball". They panned the train sound across the P.A. speakers in stereo to open & close the track (pun intended), just like the album. And it was freaking LOUD! Long live WR!!

I spent a lot of time with the band this year - 1976 - and recorded them the following year. The band chose a path that would bring them tremendous success, with groundbreaking new music even breaking thru to the radio. Jaco brought a brand new sensibility to Weather Report, though Joe really struggled to accept his starring role. Truth is, and Joe knew it, Weather Report rocketed musically after 1976. It was a tumultuous time, even toxic backstage, but audiences were blissfully unaware.

And I saw him do it live in Hartford, CT, with WR in October 1974 (how I acquired the ticket to this show is a whole 'nother story in itself. I posted it on another RU-vid thread some time ago. Thankfully, RU-vid seems to have a lot of their live performances uploaded just for unlucky guys like me. Just wish they'd allowed people to videotape the acts back then. Today's generation's gonna miss out on a lot of different perspectives and techniques. If only record companies didn't have that stupid rule about "no cameras or videos allowed". Who knows how many great solo performances were missed because of it?!

Let's say the same about Paul Simon's last line-up... from Graceland, and from Rythm of the Saints... anything different? THIS IS MUSIC. NOT PREJUDICE.

One of the finest soprano sax tones I’ve ever heard! Didier malherbe of Gong is still my favorite on that particular instrument. Even if they took a lot of inspiration from weather report during gongs “shamal” era, their earlier space rock fusion holds a special place in my heart.

Alan Haynes you don’t say!! His sound has always been one of those things that’s just in your head for the rest of your life for me. It’s very lovely to know the actual instrument that plays in my head very frequently.
