Fun review. Just bought the non sporting 28” version and super excited about it. I like your attitude towards shooting and guns. It’s not what it costs that matters it’s all about what you can do with it!

Thank you SO MUCH for your review! I’ve been shooting a Stevens Model 311 side by side for 8 years now. I shoot it very well. After putting over 8000 rounds thru it I needed something new, but just cannot afford a Beretta upgrade on my income. After doing much research and your video, this is now the gun I’ll choose! 👍

Thanks a lot for your review & your time & effort. I am getting back into skeet shooting after 30 years absence. I thought about a Winchester 101 but the more I looked, this gun drew me in. I have never been one to care about frills & minor details. I just wanted something that was well built & reliable. This gun seems to be just what I want. I am picking one up this coming weekend. & Yes, it all about having fun my man! Thanks again & good shooting..

If you take off the butt stock to access the receiver innards, you will see the trigger has 2 holes to select trigger pull weight. Comes factory set at an average of 6.4lb trigger pull. If you poke out the trigger pin at factory setting which is the hole farthest away from trigger and re-insert pin to closest hole to trigger, you now have a 4.9lb trigger pull weight. The 2 trigger pin holes are only 1/8 inch apart.

Great Review! I recently bought one of these in the 28" non-sporting version with the POW grip. I absolutely love it and it fits me like a glove. I also like the mechanical trigger, no inertia required for reset. Also the ejectors work great as well as the barrel selector. I also bought Carlson sporting chokes for mine. I shoot it well and it works, so to me, that is what really matters. Can't beat it for the money in my opinion and the triggers to me feel just fine even when checking it with snap caps. There is also that little fun element that sometimes happens when you outshoot someone who has a much higher price over/under.

I agree with you 100%. I've been shooting for 6 or 7 years now and I'm thankful for my Beretta as400. I've always wanted an O/U, particularly the silver pigeon. However my wife doesn't believe it is worth it lol. As for my newest purchase, the Weatherby Orion, i think its amazing. It's fun to shoot and does the exact same thing as all the other O/U lol. Keep posting, and keep shooting!

Case in point, I had such an enjoyable time last Tuesday, breaking targets with mini shells through my Maverick 88 and its 20" barrel, that on Thursday I got in the car and drove an hour to handle some OU's. After holding a $4,000 Browning with all the fixings, I came home and went down the online rabbit hole. Happy to say my new Orion Sporting saved me almost $3,000 and I should have it this week😊 They ARE hard to find in 12ga. Can't wait Nicely done review. Thank You. PS - popping away at moving targets with the Mossburg is not gonna stop either, great practice

very accurate information. I took a chance on one of these without much information available in July 2020 and have been completely satisfied. Shooting trap weekly and coming up on 2500 rounds fired. New trap shooter and consistently hitting 23-24 with occasional 25 mixed in. Shot doubles 1 day and put up a 37 and 44. My dad got me to start going to the trap club with him. When I decided I was hooked and wanted to get more serious than my 11-87 I set my budget at 2000$. This had the features I wanted and instead of buying a B gun I had money left over to buy 6 trulock chokes, a used Mec9000 and a bunch of reloading components.
@redbeardtn9727
@redbeardtn9727 3 года назад
I also added some chokes and lots of ammo... 2500 rounds... that is awesome to know. I should be there in a couple of months as well. Love these guns but I sure hope they add a 20g as well... if not I will end up getting some sub-gauge tubes

Redbeard is spot on. The Orion Sporting is a smooth shooter that has a surprisingly low felt recoil. I don't think there is another $860 gun with the features of an adjustable comb, ported barrels, dual ribs and a knockoff B-686 action. I really like the beefy prince of Wales grip, forend swell and the highly varnished woodwork - specifically because it doesn't look like everyone else's gun at the club. I bought mine at Gallery of Guns so it came wth the Davidsons lifetime guarantee of free replacement (additional peace of mind). I like the look of the gold Carlsons chokes, but for the price of one tube, I will purchase a can of Durametl Van Golden and refinish the knurled extensions of the entire 5 tube choke set that came wth my gun. I could not be any more pleased with it.

I like my Orion Sporting in 20 gauge very much. I have heard some rumblings about the action being tight and claims that the machining is off. I think the problem if there even is one, is that the machining is very tight. When greased properly the action opens normally. In our 100 degree Texas heat, after 50 rounds the gun gets hot. I believe the metal is expanding from the heat and causing the action to be tight. Once the barrel has cooled off the problem goes away.

Guess it's not a Beretta, then. Great gun for the money. For me it points better than my Browning. The barrel selector is a little too loose for my liking, but overall, I enjoy shooting mine. I also got a selection of Carlson ported extended choke tubes for mine as well and did notice that I have to take a wire bore brush and give the tubes a good cleaning after each round of clays cause debris builds up on them. An owner recently pointed out that the action has a design weakness. The lower face of the receiver is beveled away from the chamber a couple of degrees where the lower chamber mates to the receiver. The result is that only about 40% of the case head is supported against the receiver face and there is a gap between the face of the receiver and the lower portion of the shell base. When the lower chamber is fired, the gas pressure deforms the shell base, filling that gap and making it difficult to open the action as the bent portion of the shell base is dragged against receiver and over the bevel. Mine hasn't demonstrated this yet and isn't overly difficult to open after shooting the bottom chamber, but I've only been shooting light target loads so far.

I agree. I have owned two Browning's for 6 years and I love them, one of them being a 725. The other day shooting sporting clays I tried a friends Weatherby Orion, I couldn't miss a clay. I just could not believe how balanced and well it fit with the adjustable comb for 1/3 the price. Even though I don't need one I want one . I know many of you will agree there is nothing wrong with just having another gun.

Great review Sir and thank you. I have a question , the top lever once the action is locked, does it stay on the right side or it will stop on the center? @redbeardtn9727
@redbeardtn9727 3 года назад
The lever should be to the right on a new gun (this is with almost any new O/U or SxS)... as a gun is shot more and more, it will become more centered. This is one way to also tell "wear" or usage on a gun as well. If the lever is to the right, less usage.... I hope you enjoy your new O/U

Appreciate the honest review! I'm very much a beginner and have a couple of questions for you. Which is easier for a beginner to learn, trap or skeet? Will this gun work well for either?
@redbeardtn9727
@redbeardtn9727 2 года назад
Honestly to me, either is easy to learn... which would you probably get higher scores at quicker.. Trap... however, do not let that guide you... One thing to keep in mind is that between the two there is more of a dedicated gun for trap... yes you can shoot any shotgun in trap but there are trap ribs on guns for a reason and that reason is the clays are rising and thus many trap guns are set up to shoot high for this reason... can you use a standard rib gun, yes but generally will need to cover up the clay when shooting. Skeet you do not have this issue and can see the clay through the whole flight of the clay... The Weatherby gun in its configuration is not set up to shoot high - for trap but can be used for it with adjustments in your sighting picture

I appreciate the video-one of the guns I’m considering. When others have said they have “disdain” for over/unders that aren’t expensive, it makes me scratch my head. Is an $800 o/u more likely to malfunction or break than a $350 Rem 870 pump? The o/u has two barrels and more sophisticated ejectors and barrel selector device for trigger. But it costs more than double, so I would think they should be on par. Am I wrong on that?
@redbeardtn9727
@redbeardtn9727 3 года назад

I have an inexpensive Turkish made CZ shotgun and a really nice Browning. They're both o/u. The CZ has been back to CZ twice, but they have very good customer service. The Browning hasn't missed a beat. There is definitely a difference between the more expensive ones and cheap ones to a certain point. Just my .02

I now have shot probably around 1200-15-00 rounds through it both it skeet and sporting clays. With that said, I like it now as much or more than when I first purchased the gun. Not the first issue. My scores have steadily improved in both disciplines. The only thing I can say is that I am going to buy more external ported chokes for it for sporting clays but that is just a preference as the ones supplied are fine but I really do like to have "higher end" chokes on all my guns.

I'm picking mine up tomorrow. Question for you. Are you having slight difficulty opening the breach after firing the lower barrel?
@redbeardtn9727
@redbeardtn9727 2 года назад
No. I have heard of some people saying this on other reviews so recently when i went to the range to shoot skeet, I switched and used the bottom barrel for all single shots just to see if this was happening with mine. I did not have any more difficulty opening it with just the bottom barrel fired as I do with the top barrel alone fired. I really have noticed no difference in any configuration... Also I wonder what people expect... obviously the more I have shot the gun the easier it is to open. However I do not just snap the gun open or closed. I use my hands to do this (never liked the thought of snapping one open or closed just like to do not slap a cylinder closed on a revolver).. Glad you got one... I am seriously considering one in 20 gauge. I saw one the other day at Buds and almost walked out with it but I had my eye on another gun instead.

Is it a steel receiver and what do you think of the porting?
@redbeardtn9727
@redbeardtn9727 3 года назад
Yes, the receiver is forged steel... the porting holes are done very nicely on the gun. There are not as many as on some guns. The porting is 5 holes on top with 4 below. The porting holes themselves seem very consistent and even and done well. With this said, I am a person who is not recoil shy at all... I can shoot a 12 or 28 all day and not feel any different. So I am not one who would be good to comment on reduced recoil at all... as far as reducing the rise of the gun, I would assume in theory it does help but at the same time, I do not have an Orion without porting to shoot side by side to determine.

The weatherby is a more polished version of the Ata sp, at that end of the market they are a good deal.They look nice and fit/finish outwardly is above average. People just need to realise they are cheap for a reason, double guns are expensive to make and these budget friendly guns look fine and shoot well, but as a dedicated clay gun longterm they won't last like the big names. Different quality of steels and tooling internally.
@redbeardtn9727
@redbeardtn9727 3 года назад
Typical reply (no offense)... it will not last like others. I will be lucky to put 1200 -1500 rounds a year through this gun with everything I like to do along with the use of other guns (2 Berettas for sporting clays and a dedicated trap gun). When someone looks at how much they do shoot, most of the time these type guns will last for the life time of the shooter for most shooters.
@fullchoke01
@fullchoke01 3 года назад
@@redbeardtn9727think you misunderstood mate, not really a typical reply as i meant a dedicated clay shooter can shoot 10xxx a year. And no they will not last against that. Which is why i said people need to realise as in it doesn't belong in a comparison to a gun 4x as much. So you can't expect that quality. It will last a casual user a lifetime. But you see so many saying it is just a beretta etc.
@redbeardtn9727
@redbeardtn9727 3 года назад
@@fullchoke01 I understand what you are saying... but one must also remember that when you compare the casual shooter to the hardcore shooter, there are far more casual shooters. It seems very very common for anyone posting a good review of something other than a gun deemed "Good enough" to shoot 100K plus rounds, that along comes a serious shooter to remind everyone why their guns are so much better. However, as an owner of Berettas, Brownings, Merkels, Winchesters, etc. I personally find these guns fill a very needed niche in the market for the person who wants to shoot clays but does not have the major dollars to spend on a gun deemed "appropriate" by many in the sport (notice I said many, I did not say you or you were saying this") One of the main reasons I did this review (only gun review I have done so far) was to encourage anyone looking at this gun that wanted to get involved with the sport of skeet or sporting clays was to let them know that they did not need a multi thousand gun to do so.
@fullchoke01
@fullchoke01 3 года назад
@@redbeardtn9727 all well and good mate. I did not comment to say it is a bad gun- i actually own an ata sp as a backup gun and for the money it is great, I simply am sharing my experience as i see many shooters expect too much from certain guns. Ah, the mystical steel quality question - bash on the gun... It seems to be the main thing everyone who does not like guns made in Turkey wants to throw out there... (not saying you are doing this at all). However, I keep hearing about this... "oh you need to do this and that because their steel is not hard enough". I have searched and search to try and find out where this is coming from and have not found any proof of it at all. I would hope if this were an issue there would be some actual research behind it instead of people saying this because the gun is not a Beretta or Merkel, etc... However, I have yet to see any proof or hear any proof that the steel is an issue, other than So and So said it was.
