The inaugural video of JC’s Riptrack appropriately tackles the basic question of “Where do I start?” when it comes to making weathered model trains from factory-painted models. This video introduces a process that can help one get started in weathering model trains, but is transferable to almost any form of modelling. #model #weathering #painting

So what sort of process do you use for weathering your models? Let's hear it!

What a genuine pleasure! New to model railroading and I am 25yo and inspired to learn all these wonderful techniques to over time get better and better at weathering my locomotives and rolling stock! Thank you for making this video!

Thanks, JC. I like an introductory step like this before actually launching weathering. I look forward to all your videos. THANKS. - Dean from Minnesota.

Thanks Dean. I realized that we focus a lot on technique and not on process. There are dozens of techniques, but if we understand *how* weathering happens, we can then adjust our techniques along the way.

@@JCsRiptrack a friend of mine who also follows your channel did a weathering challenge. I have a boxcar I am unsure of how to fade it. Yellow body, red door.

@@TheTrainFreak What technique will you be using? If doing a oil dot fade, you can target the fading a bit, and may be a better option than an airbrush fade.

One more question... black coloured cars in general, or anything specific, like tank cars?
@JoeG-firehousewhiskey
@JoeG-firehousewhiskey 5 лет назад
JC's Riptrack any type of cars. That isassuming the same technique can be used on any car.

Joe G Will do... although techniques for gondolas and tank cars may differ a little bit, but consider your topic at the top of my list once I get these first ones out the door. :)

I’ve weathered some trains, some using magnifying glass and leaves, to stuff to make it look dark, and or I’ve used a piece of metal and took the body of the car, put a rusty piece of metal on top, thn used a tub for my fountain pump originally, thn whch I’d use for tht whch thn got thrown out, but it took awhile like I’d leave it out in th e tub outside snd lke either weeks to months or so, and it looks reak, knda runs off but it’s rlly hard to do somewhat. But I was gonna just buy weathered o scale trauns and weather thn, forbpole tht need weathered o scale, since smaller is more available lke if you dnt hve smaller but o scale, buy the realistic cars lke the excess car carriers from Lionel tht open the doors or lke hve the open doors on the side, thn make thm look real weathered or jst lke weathered in general, xnd buy it for 109 smthng or si thn lke sell thm fir 3 to 600 or so

Ta, the paint on my red nt box car doesn’t need to be simulated, because it actually is chipping

I’m just getting into the hobby and have a collection of flex track and snap-track. Can these be hooked together?

Hi Edwin, yes they can. Often turnouts are snaptrack, and they do match up. It depends on what you're trying to do.

In this video, what type of paint do you use for Weathering ?? Acrylic paint or oil paint or other types of paint ??
@JCsRiptrack
@JCsRiptrack 5 лет назад
As this is an overview, the others detail the process. I use both acrylics and oils, as well as some pre-mixed weathering products. It really depends on what I am trying to achieve. For example, for the Pin-wash step, which is detailed in another video in the playlist, I usually use either a home-made oil paint wash, or an off-the-shelf product depending on the model itself.
