Re-creating a 12th century design using a threaded in pattern and a bit of history about Roger II, King of Sicily and Africa.
The patterns I create or find on Pinterest are pinned to my board here: / weave-along-with-elewy... . I will also post it on my blog.
Pattern for this weave can be found at ladyelewys.carp... and will be available after the video goes live.
Aisling can be found at aisling.biz/
The cards can be found here: www.etsy.com/s... along with several other treasures for your weaving pleasures!

I am not sponsored by any company, but if any of you are interested to know the materials I use:
Tablet Weaving Pattern Generator (TDD):
* jamespbarrett....
* How to use TDD: • Getting the Most from ... which will walk you through the many great features of this software.
Yarns:
* Maysville Carpet Warp, which can be found at several different weaving supply places (I often use WEBS at www.yarn.com). It comes in more than 70 colors on an 800 yard spool for about $9, so it can be used in a number of projects and the price is very reasonable.
* Maurice Brassard 8/2 cotton, which I purchased at woolery.com/ma.... It comes in 81 different colors and is really lovely to work with.
* 20/2 or 60/2 silk from Eowyn de Weaver has recently moved her store from Etsy. Each cone is $30 and comes in 18 different colors. There are also small 100 yard spools that run $5 each and comes in more than 2 dozen colors. New web site! www.eowyndewever.com
* Pearl cotton, size 8 or size 10 (or even 12, if you love to work with fine stuff), which can be found is most craft stores in a bunch of colors.
Sewing:
* I use 100% linen from Linen-Store.com in the IL019 weight for my tunics. The quality of their linen is very good, their prices are very reasonable and shipping is fast! Use "ILOVELINEN" in the discount code for an additional 7% off!
Cards:
* 2 1/2" wide (63 mm) made on a 3D printer, a pattern designed by my husband. Free downloadable patterns of other tablets are available on Thingiverse (this one is not my pattern--we are still working the kinks out of the design but these cards are Oseberg reproductions: www.thingivers...)
* 3 1/4" cards from Schacht Spindle Company, which run $8 for 25 cards. I love these because they are colored on the edges and they are thin but very durable. Similar cards are made by Lacis but without the colored edges.
Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.

I'm the one who asked for Italy, and I'm so excited you found something. What a cool video and very interesting history. I guess it's a good reminder going into Thanksgiving that dysfunctional families are nothing new. 😂 Elewys, you are amazing, and this video brightened up my day so much. The holidays are hard for me and this brightened up my heart significantly.

Mumbling to self is an integral part of any handcraft, I think. Glad to hear hubby's doing well, that's always nice to hear. My mom "imported" her husband from the 'states so they also do two thanksgivings too, usually they have yours here and ours there just to beat the rush!! I think they're even getting the neighbours in on it. Because as you said, more pie!

Beautiful pattern. Thank you for including some of the history too. The rubber band trick is very handy, I also use rubber bands on the ends of my pegs after the warping is done. This helps prevent the threads coming off the ends when I'm advancing the warp, especially useful with wider bands.

If you're able to get Future floor wax (it's called "Revive It" now, I think) -- this is an acrylic coating that (fine scale) model makers use as a coat before putting down decals, to prevent silvering. But it's a good coating. It might help your wooden cards be a little bit more smooth -- if you don't have an airbrush, you should be able to brush it on then give it a light buffing. It's not period, of course! ; )

At this point, I’ve just seen the first part, with the history of the inspiration piece, and it’s so rich with detail, I’m going to listen to it again before I plunge into the weaving, So what I’m saying is, I’m skipping loom, fibers, tablets and patterns and going straight to tea. I was wondering if there have been any historical examples of tablet weaving that use more than 4 holes. I recently saw a hexagon shaped card and wondered how modern that many color options would be. Thank you so much for your wonderful videos! You got me interested in wanting to learn this art form.

Beautiful pattern, thanks for sharing. As for your cards waxing: I don't think they need it. When i got mine from a card maker, he also gave me a sponge and suggested to sand them down occationally. The sponge looks a bit like a dishwashing sponge, but much finer and stiffer, especially on the 'rough' side. I did that only once when i got them new (many years ago). But he also suggested to oil them regularly when using, as they are untreated with anything. You can use specially made 'wood oil' or just use some olive oil. I oil down all my wooden stuff regularly (like bamboo cutting boards or my olive wood hair brush, etc) with just a piece of cloth, and include my wooden cards after using them. When you wipe the oil on with a cloth, you don't have to do anyhting else actually, just don't use them immediately after as the oil needs a bit to soak into the wood. And don't worry for the oil getting on your hands, olive oil is better than any hand cream.
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 Год назад
Good tips! I know my husband has one of those sponge sanders in the garage (somewhere...he's in the midst of reorganizing), so I know exactly what you're talking about!

Really nice pattern, will try it out! I use these wooden tablets. What I do when all the tablet need to be turned in one direction is devide them in two sections and turn both sections separate instead of turning them all at once. I love the wooden tablets. It just takes a little bit of getting used to.

Mam, did you know that you just save a life? First of all, greetings from Indonesia.. Few months ago, I was in this depressed time. My mom passed away and my boyfriend went abroad then broke my heart. My whole world crumbled. I lost my foothold. I was planning to end my life.. My friends suggested me to seek for professional help. But it didn't help. I tried painting to distract my minds from suicidal thoughts. It didn't help either. I was painting an apple but it ends up looking like a tomato.. About a week ago, I found one of your video and it piqued my interest. I'm learning so much about tablet weaving from you. I watched more of your videos ever since. I brought threads and make my own weaving tablet.. The process is somehow relaxing and it helped me going through my depression. I couldn't be more grateful for your life-saving videos. Thank you.. P.S. Do you have any website recommendation to look for weaving patterns?

The cards did make me wonder how you would know which end is up. Tooting my own horn here but I just made 2" mahogany cards that have the holes labeled AND I have bumps on the outside sides (1, 2, 3, and 4) so that you know where you are. I also made a mini loom for travel and a mini shuttle to go with it. I would love to share the pics!

Could you tighten the warp if you enlarged the 1st dowel (B), above the cards by wrapping it with a piece of thick paper? That may raise the warp that passes over that dowel a little and tighten the whole thing. Then you could slip it off when it got too tight. The tube from the center of a roll of TP might work well.

I just started working on this band finally and it is turning out beautifully. One question. As I am weaving, I noticed that the pattern is almost twist neutral but not quite there. The center most cards are slowly building up twist. How did you handle that with this particular pattern?
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 Год назад
I created a "reverse" of the pattern that will slowly untwist the middle cards. The motifs will be mirrored but that will be almost undetectable in this pattern. I'll try to remember to post the pattern tonight.
