Weaving a Cane Seat (Ep 16 - Cedar Strip Canoe Build)

In this video I show how I weave cane on the seats I made for my cedar strip canoe. The last 20 seconds of the video is time lapse of the weaving process - watching that a couple times might make the process make more sense...
Process:
Soak the strands of cane in room temperature water for about 15 minutes before you weave with them. Soaking them makes them more flexible and also a little bit stretchy. When the cane dries it will tighten up a little bit where ever you weave it. If you soak it for more than a half an hour I’ve heard the cane starts to discolor.
LAYER 1 is a vertical layer. Start in the middle and leave about 4 inches hanging down from where you start. Pull the cane across (shiny side up) and put it in the corresponding hole across from where you started. Feed it down that hole, up the hole next to it, across to the other side, and continue like this to one side of the seat. Then go back to where you started and feed it the other side.
LAYER 2 is a horizontal - pretty much the same as the first layer - just lay it right on top.
LAYER 3 is a repeat of layer 1 only this time put it slightly to the right of the first layer.
LAYER 4 is when you start weaving. Weave over layer 3 and under layer 1.
LAYER 5 is the first diagonal layer. I don’t think it matters if you weave over the horizontal strands and under the vertical strands or vice versa. For my weave I went over the vertical and under the horizontal.
LAYER 6 is the last layer. You weave the opposite diagonal pattern than you did for layer 5.
Bind the edges with the wider cane. I think I used 4mm wide cane. Stick an end into one of the corner holes, then on a hole next to it, make a loop with the 3mm cane and synch the binding cane down. Then use the same 3mm cane to make a loop on the next hole. Continue like this around the entire seat.
Tie the loose ends underneath the seat.
Here are some other caning resources I’ve found online that were helpful for me:

• Weaving A Cane Seat Us...
Here is a kit I bought on Amazon that I used:
www.amazon.com/WoodRiver-200F...
Here are a couple good resources to learn more about Cedar Strip Canoe Building:
www.amazon.com/Canoecraft-Ill... - “Canoecraft” is the cedar strip canoe building bible. Buy it and read the whole book before you start building.
forum.woodenboat.com/ - This site is actually really helpful. Usually if I type a specific boat building question into google a previous forum post from the Woodenboat Forum is near the top. You can also post your own questions.
www.instructables.com/id/Build... - This guy (Jim Clem) made a very detailed step-by-step guide to cedar strip canoe building. There are a lot of helpful process explanations for some of the trickier parts of building. I used his blog a lot while building my first canoe.
Feel free to comment on this video if you have any questions! Thanks for watching!
I get my canoe building materials from Noah's Marine Supply (www.noahsmarine.com/index.asp)

Great video. I have watched this multiple times. I am trying to link your video in my description in my latest video series where i am building a Freedom 17. I started caning one of my seats with regular natural cane and it keeps breaking. Finally at a point of frustration, I have ordered some plastic cane and will try that. Anyway, thanks! This is top notch! Cheers, Chuck

I do the binding using alternate holes, and permanently peg the other alternate holes. I pass the loose end up through the hole to be pegged so that there are no loose end on the underside of the seat and it's much tidier. I put a temporary peg in the back corner hole and do the binding up to the front corner. I put the wide cane into the hole and take the next strip for the front edge. I insert the end into the hole but fold the cane back to the left, peg the hole and then fold the beading cane back and continue with the binding until I reach the next corner. In this way only the peg in the last hole can be seen.

The cane work is beautiful. I'm likely leaving beekeeping after a long time. I'm looking for something new and I've done woodworking (built kitchen cabinets, etc.) and I'm looking at building a canoe and kayak to add to my other water craft. You have been doing a fantastic job, especially with your explanations. I'll likely be cutting my own cedar planks. This is so cool. A fun challenge!

Hello Adam, The distance between the holes. You say 3/4inch away from each other. Is this from center to center (of the holes) or is it between holes? Also do you varnish or anything the cane after weaving for protection?

Glad that I found you on caning a chair because I have an antique rocker that I inherited and want to cane the bottom seat. However it is curved on the bottom edges and square on the top. Do you have a video for a seat that is not completely square? Love your techniques and will use them. I am refurbishing the rocker and staining it white. Can you spray paint cane on chairs? Thanks!

We are wood/canvas canoe builders and rebuilders. We call this the 'chair seat weave'. In our 'canoe seat weave' commonly used in Canada (and all our canoes and repairs), we do the first two layers together (the short ones), then the the other two, then the diagonals. It's somewhat easier, you don't 'get lost' as easily. We also do a few other details differently, but not in any important sense.

Tanner Jabez Garrett good question - I did epoxy, then varnish, then I caned. I don’t know if that’s how everybody does it but that’s how I thought I could make the longest lasting seat...
