I have been watching so many videos and just couldn’t get how to weave properly. The video was either not clear or not explained good. This one is the best by far. Now I can do it. Thank you so much.

That's the main reason for this. I had the same issues. Glad it has helped you

Aunt Meem... those metal rods on the sides.. do you sell those on their own? another viewer is asking where to get them and of course i thought of you!

Phoebe! I love your instructions! I have been making rugs with your instructions for a year or so now. I was wondering, if I wanted to see my warping, could I skip crossing over with my material strips and just weave them over under over under and cross at the ends of each row etc? Or will it just fall apart when taken if I did that. (More of a shuttle style weave) Thank you!!

Thank you so much. Ya know, making videos was scary for me but knowing it has helped people with a craft..makes it worth doing. In answer to your questions, yes you can with a change up. You see, with the cross over method, it locks your materials together. Your warp and weft will hold together once the rug is complete. Your warp material, which is what you put on the loom first and runs up and down... is only holding because of the pegs.I haven't tried to weave on a twine loom because we have looms already. With some changes, you might get by with it. First, you'll have to add fringe or something in the peg loops when you are ready to take it off. basic weaving is warp strings held by pegs running to the other end via heddles and harnesses. but to weave and not tie off the ends, well it will take no time for the weaving to begin coming undone. Then you have wasted not only materials but your time as well. The second you'll have to do is work to keep the sides in line. When twining, the rods on the side help form your rug plus twisting the material needs room. they keep the sides in shape to the frame giving you a nice squared rug. normal weaving will not allow for that much space on the sides. it will deform your final piece. So if you can keep your sides level ( without using the rods for support) and you add fringe to the ends. you should be able to weave normally on a twine loom. You would still need material or really fat cording as the distance on the pegs is too far for standard 3 or 4 ply yarn. Hope that helps so give it a whirl and see what happens! then you can do a video on how to do it!! Good Luck!

I have just started my first rug and there are so many threads! Will they go away? Or is it just going to be part of the look? I don't see any in your video!
@rswcreatives
@rswcreatives 4 года назад
Once you complete the rug, you can go back and trim those off. Fray strings will happen no matter what you use but some material is worse then others. Just cut off as many as you can and once you start walking on it, they kinda slip back in.

i was so bad. I failed to mention the maker of these twining looms, which happens to be Libby Lula. You can find their store on etsy. com. They are very well made, easy to put together and work like a breeze. Twining is fun and a wonderful craft to do. We take in senior abused dogs and these rugs work wonderful for bedding and at the doors to cut down on dirt brought in by paws and human feet. they vacuum well, can take them out and shake them and still have a good rug to use. keep old sheets and other materials to make them or hit the local second hand stores for materials. there really is no wrong way to make these. So check out Libby Lula over on etsy.. or on one of the 3 videos, there is a link that will take you right to it.

I love your videos! I have made three rugs. 2 turned out perfectly and one is bowed in on one side. I'' not sure what I did wrong, any ideas?
@rswcreatives
@rswcreatives 6 лет назад
well without being able to see the rug I'm gonna toss out some suggestions for you to consider. Does your frame have the steel rods on the sides? the rods keep the sides of the rug consistent. if you do have them, then it would turn my attention to the type of material that you used.. was it cotton or was it a stretchy material. after that, I would look at the amount of tension in the weaving. if you pulled your weaving tighter on one side as opposed to the other side, one you take it off the loom, it would pull one way or the other. If you are working on your rug and need to stop to , lets say fix dinner, then make sure you stop in the middle of the rug space. stopping on the end will create slack in the weaving and possibly cause pulling when you remove it. hope that helps.

I just finished my first rug. I can see the side straps that were weaves along with the bar. Will these blend in the more the rug is used?
@rswcreatives
@rswcreatives 4 года назад
just seen this one. that's questionable. the warp, if tight enough, will pull the loops in at the top and bottom. It's possible with that pulling that they will shore in the sides but can't promise it will happen either.

So when you turned the corner on the left only one strip went around the rod/last weft correct? I thought both strips always had to go around the rod/last weft on both sides.
@rswcreatives

Whichever way works for you is good. For me, both pieces made the sides too bulky. Taking one worked for me.

Where do buy your fabric? The cost is a problem for me at this time. (The cheapest sheets I’ve found are microfiber-yuck!)
@rswcreatives
@rswcreatives 3 года назад
Honestly, I go to thrift stores and get sheets. A kitchen valance with the seams taken out is yard of fabric. Pillowcases work too. Takes a little work with a seam ripper but a good show on tv, fire going and an hour can have it done. Unless its it's an order, I use second hand. Ask family and friends for old sheets to. Wash and use them up

Can you do this with wool roving?
@rswcreatives
@rswcreatives 2 года назад
I personally wouldn't. I also spin and wool roving is not intended to be used as it is. Could it be done!? probably with care. Wool is run thru the process to line up the tiny fibers in the same direction for the spinner to be able to pull those fibers lose and twist into a usable yarn with strength. A small child can pull apart roving and cats and dogs.. LOVE.. to get their claws and teeth into it. It's a constant battle here with a single cat who gets into it and packs it all over the house and does unmentionables to it lol. With that, can you do roving on this loom.. carefully with little strain and no children or animals to get to it. Would I recommend roving? not at all.

It should come off the same way if it is built the same. Pull the rods out on both sides..then start working the loops off the pegs

Phoebe Snow, love your tutorial, very precise. Do not like the noise in the background as if someone were looking for something or putting things away. Too distracting.
@rswcreatives
@rswcreatives 6 лет назад
these videos were made in our craft room. We converted a 2 car garage that was nothing more then a storage bin into a crafting space. That noise, was my mother on a floor size weaving loom. I spin her yarn for her. she loves to weave rugs and blankets. Unfortunately, at 80 and losing her eyesight.. it's a sound I'll never hear her make again as she can no longer weave. I'm sorry it bothered you but it was the sound of her making the rug that now adorns my bedroom floor made with yarn I spun. Something I'll hold on to for a long time.

@@tootsiefirst I fully agree. My mom has just turned 81 and sadly is losing her eyesight so her weaving has slowed down quite a bit. I have piece all over the house from her hands. Have rugs, paintings, wall art and other things. Think most of us kids have something of her in our homes. she just finished a painting for a family members new house. it will come to an end soon as MD will take her vision so we cherish every day that we get. Thank you for commenting and You have my prayers for the loss you have just been handed. Nothing like mom, is there! But she will always be with you in your heart!

Same here. Most of the wall decor is things she has made. Wouldn't part with any of them. The big loom is gone and a smaller one sits in bgg its place but she doesn't work it like she used to. Right eye is just about gone and left one is waning. Md is nasty business for sure. Thank you for understanding. Hoping to get some time for something new

I don't know if Libby Lula sells just the rods are not. Worth asking tho. The metal rods on our twine looms comes with the kit. it's what stabilizes the rug while you weave and keeps your sides even. very important to have those gadgets on there. iamauntmeem is the the maker of the loom.. you can scroll down a bit in the previous comments and see what she mentions the loom. she recognized the sound! lol.. that's the only option i know of is ask her.
