Depends on the type of lava. Some has more gases trapped in it, which makes them more like this lava. Tubes under the lava crust can keep lava more liquidy, by trapping the heat. Hawaii natives had names for the different types of lava. A'a is the type in the video. Also known as clinker lava, because of the sounds in makes. Pahoehoe lava is the more liquid lava. Third type of lava is pillow lava formed underwater. These three are the most common lava formations that are on the isles.
Raven Saint Very informative. I’ve never seen this clinker lava type before. Always had the impression that flowing lava was smooth with consistency and temperature affecting viscosity.
KOB KOB yeah I guess I never thought of it like all crumbled and when the pieces fall they sound like cinder blocks. Always picture is liquid and just cools as like a rounded and liquid like. Lol. It’s super cool to see. Hopefully all the people are ok tho. Must be scary as hell to be there.
The higher, hotter flow just coming out of the ground oozes or spits and splatters out like honey. Near the far toes of the flow, the front part starts to cool and solidify. But the pressure from the upper flow keeps pushing it forward and breaks it into brittle chunks that tumble along. Sometimes near the front of the flow, huge hunks are rolled along like giant black snowballs. It is mesmerizing to watch the flows advance. Hope that helps explain the chunks.
Why would someone leave their car right in the path of the lava? Especially when the lava is moving so slowly there would have been plenty of time to get the car.
raydunakin you have to think too what if it belonged to someone single that owned two cars. Kind of hard to evacuate with two cars when you're one person. If that was me though I'd park my car far away and run back and get the other one and drive it away too
The guy who owned the car say the battery was dead and he didn't have enough time to get it jumped. So he's living in his other car now since his house is gone too. And the r2d2 mail box was from his sister or something as a Christmas gift.

At least one problem with that. Most modern cars, if you don't have a key, have the steering wheel locked. No steering and mailbox was ahead of the car.

You said it, stiimuli! Basalt often occurs as *pahoehoe* , but it can also take the form of *aa* . Aa is very thick and moves a lot like a conveyor belt. (In fact, such movement is the only reason thick, chunky lava can move long distances.)
