There are 2 major concerns of automotive electric motor propulsion systems
EMP (battery + converter + electric machine): (i) dependence on rare earth materials (PMs), and (ii) motors operate at much higher speed than in most industrial applications. Optimal motor design is therefore crucial
This talk provides an overview of the status and future trends in the design of electrical machines, electronic power converters, and controls for EMP. Torque density, efficiency, performance, cost, noise and vibration are used as criteria in the study. Related issues on storage systems/charging infrastructure and connected/autonomous technologies are also briefly discussed to provide a holistic picture of the electrified vehicle society. Upcoming activities of the Vehicle Power and Propulsion (VPP) Committee within the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) will also be informed at the end of the talk
