So from what I've got from this is 1. Be good at the Fundamentals aka (drawing, painting, anatomy, lighting, value, color, clothing, etc) 2. Be good at Design (big; medium; small; balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, repetition etc) 3. Do ideation first ( design much different iterations) then choose one and then do variations of that ideation you chose 4. Focus on functionality rather pretty pictures 5. Make sure to do turnarounds of the chosen design (mostly "A" poses) 6. When designing stick to 3 or maybe 4 types of materials (metals, fabrics, etc) 7. Make sure the presentation is attractive (template with name and date at the bottom, gray background or gradient background) 8. Double the size of the document and then shrink it down (3840 x 2160 to 1920 x 1080 or 22 x 34in to 11x17in) 9.Don't rely on text but rely on the design to communicate the idea ( if you need text to explain then the design probably sucks) 10. The fancy render of your character or the key art comes at the end (used for the corporate suits to get approval, artstation, promotional material etc)

Holy crap! I just watched the second half of the video, and am so pleasantly surprised to hear David was an educator! I was a high school teacher until I got the chance to work in games, so cool to hear I'm not the only one who made the change - maybe I'll be able to be in this class!

This is AMAZING - I have a question if you're willing to answer! I have experience on a single AAA title as lead narrative designer, and art director, but am also getting my art chops up to apply for creative jobs, ideally in concept or hardsurface modelling, but honestly anything in entertainment design. I'm applying to a narrative design job at the moment, and want to share the concepts and moodboards that I worked on with my team, and show the ideation process without messing with NDA - how best do you recommend I do that? In my instance we used Miro as a moodboard and put our own designs as well as the inspiration on there. Any guidance or tips would be greatly appreciated, as I'm very new to the industry, but am here to stay and am struggling to find more work. I'll join the discord asap, and hopefully soon you can critique my art, as well!

Question, what is the consensus on specializing and generalist? If trying to do AAA or AA should you specialize? or be a jack of all trades?

Check out the artists working at these studios. If they are generalists, assume the studio wants generalists. If they are specialists, assume they want specialists. If you find both, assume they are okay with both
