The purpose of this webinar was to provide an introduction to wind engineering for low-rise buildings with a focus on key ASCE/SEI 7 provisions used in structural design.
The webinar content was based on ATC Design Guide 2, Basic Wind Engineering for Low-Rise Buildings, published in 2009. The Guide is based on the wind provisions of ASCE/SEI 7-05, Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures; however, the webinar content has been updated to reflect changes adopted in ASCE/SEI 7-16. The webinar covers the ‘how-to’ of determining wind pressures on buildings, including how to determine wind speed from maps, how to determine exposure at a particular site, and how to determine building enclosure classification. The primary procedure discussed is the “Directional Method,” but alternative methods are also covered. A worked example is presented to illustrate application of the provisions.
This webinar has been designed for building officials, engineers, architects, and others who need to learn the basics of wind engineering.
Webinar Presenter. William L. Coulbourne‎, P.E., is a structural engineering consultant and national expert in wind and flood mitigation. He has been involved in FEMA Mitigation Assessment Teams and natural hazard damage assessments for more than 25 years. He has investigated failures and mitigation design techniques for thousands of buildings, including residential structures, schools used as shelters, hospitals, and other critical facilities.
Bill is a Fellow of ASCE and a Fellow in the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) of ASCE. He actively participates on ASCE engineering standards committees, regularly delivers webinars and seminars on wind and flood design topics, and was a co-author of ATC Design Guide 2 during his time as Director of Wind and Flood Hazard Mitigation at ATC.
Hardcopies of ATC Design Guide 2 may be purchased through the ATC Online Store.
Individuals who view the recorded webinar but did not attend the live event are NOT eligible to receive a PDH certificate.
