Outkast in 2003 they went from platinum selling artists to diamond selling artist with Speaker/Box and love below. Ludacris came out with stand up, Lil Jon has Get Low. David Banner - like a pimp. Chingy had Holidy In. T.I - 24's. Point being this is when the south started to pick up momentum. Once 2005 came it was all south side artist every where.

I'm from BX, NY. I knew about Outkast, and Goodie Mob for a long long time. Recently I've moved to England and Cee-Lo Green was on the news. They were saying he was a new break out talent. Cee-Lo replyed "It took me 15 years to become of an overnight success".

TBH, Post Biggie Bad Boy is the reason why Hip Hop is what it is today. At least in the mainstream. The shiny suit era, the materalism, the bragging. People don't want to admit it. But the decline started in 1997 with exactly them. The South acts namely No Limit and Cash Money just capitalized on it and took it to another level.

If Virginia is considered the south then lets not forget about the Clipse, Missy Elliot, Timberland and Magoo. They were pretty great. It sucks that people like Starlito and Don Trip probably won't get radio play but the South is underrated. All of Dungeon Family, David Banner, Three 6 Mafia,Lil Wyte,Young Jeezy, Jody Breeze, Ludacris (the lyrical version of him),Trick Daddy,Cyhi da Prince , Screwed Up Click, Z-Ro, Trae da Truth, Slim Thug,Ace Hood, Yelewolf,Slim Dunkin and Curren$y are all nice

"real hip hop" fans don't have appreciation for ignorant music. gucci is a legend, but these kinds of people can't get over the fact that gucci's subject matter isn't conscious

I have a problem with bad rappers from all areas. North , South, East, and West. There are plenty of good southern artists in the game, just have to look past your local station in some instances.

Good point. Too much emphasis is placed upon how much money an artists makes. I never cared because it's not like the artist is going to give me any of it.

Hip-hop purists have to understand that sometimes people just want to hit the club and have fun. Why can't hip-hop be diverse. Imagine if everything sounded like Raekwon or Talb Kweli. A lot of Southern music is good to dance/bounce your head too, nothing more nothing less. Right now while chillin' at the crib, that new Phonte is getting play. But Im not gone front like I don't like to get it crackin' at a party.

I grew up in Texas. I hate to say it but the dude that said the South was getting ready to explode with respected rappers that were lyrical but became derailed when No Limit and Cash Money came out is right. Truth hurts, but when you look back it, they were popular because of beats. Lyrically, majority of them sucked. Up until 1996, the South had balance. You had 69boyz but then you had Scarface. You had 95 South then you had Ball and G. Now, you have nothing but a bunch of Tag Teams.

The south have very respected artist with legends like Outkast, UGK, Goodie Mob, Scarface but also with new comers like Big KRIT or Killer Mike.

im from Nashville, i think we, the southern hip hop region, did have some great and some awful rappers. Good - UGK Outkast T.I Scarface,J. Cole and we had bad ones Hot boys, Lil Wayne, Waka, Gucci. But i think we should be given more respect than what we get

The climate of country affects music. In the 90s there was fun southern music but it remained in that region like Kilo Ali and Raheem the Dream (unlike Gucci, Wacka, Roscoe Dash today). It was crack generation so the words of Biggie, Nas, Ice Cube, Ugk & Scarface made sense. Even in rock it was grunge.Fun music wasn’t as appreciated. In the times after 9/11 & mid-war, there was a trend to supporting this upbeat music, snap music.

On one hand you've got Outkast, Scarface, UGK and many more. But then on the other hand you've got Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka etc. I think the good rappers I mentioned are HUGE influences on nearly all rappers. However, I feel like bad, "Trap" etc. is a big influence on other types of rap out of the south resulting in bad music. In conclusion, half of the south is respected.

I disagree with a lot of what the guy with the dreads was saying. In the 90's, the group Outkast were outcast. They were the "waka flaka's" of their day. Look it up. Russell Simmons said that Outkast were killing hip-hop and then he apologized later on. Now Outkast are looked at as legends. Longevity kills all criticism, history has shown. Great convo, though! In all reality Soulja is probably one of the most important artist inn rap history. Crazy I know. But and follow me now he got a record deal off of RU-vid and a dance he created, he actually went from nothing to something. He was the first "new age" self made artist and paved the way for any artist to get hot off of a social media following and not necessarily their beat or lyrics. Odd Future, Drake, the slew of one hit wonders, Audio Push, Mac Miller etc.all owe their careers to Soulja. He proved it was possible to make it without having a direct link to the music industry as long as there was a fan base to support you. BTW Lupe Fiasco is my favorite rapper

They have to do something new. Most artists are afraid of re-inventing themselves in Hip Hop for fear of losing their fanbase/respect. I'm not really a Kanye fan, but even from the little bit of stuff I've heard from him I know that he's always trying to do so production-wise. I think it's a lot of what's made him successful. @yugang08 You make very solid points. Southern Hip-Hop i feel by now deserves it's due. There are some great artist that have come out of the south.. and even dance music (Waka, gucci, soulja)to me anyway has it's place. The problem is that it's dominated media and radio when it comes to Hip-Hop. Besides Young Money, Jay z, and kanye all I hear is them MOST basic form of Hip-Hop on radio stations. It's kind of obvious why socially concious rappers and spitters would be alienated by that.

Back in the day everyone gave mad respect to Primo, J Dilla, Pete Rock, Large Professor, etc. Nowadays it doesn't seem like the average fan knows who produced a track. And since we can all agree that most popular rap isn't lyrical, it puts that much more emphasis on the production, especially in a club. I wonder how much Waka Flocka makes compared to Lex Luger.

I get where Myke is coming from, but I don't understand why there can't be a place for the Flocka's and Gucci, clearly they have fans because people like there music and we know who they are. Neither of those rappers claim to be th best "lyricist" or hip-hop's second coming. They just doing what they do and people like it and they getting paid. The only problem, is Yes, they sort of dominate and thats not fair to the other types of rappers, but I think thats changing.

One thing about Gucci/Waka that I don't feel is covered is that they give a whole new demographic a voice. They expose a new type of dialect to the the public. I just think that success comes with either emulation or true originality and the south is great at emulation of its own rappers. The problem is that after a while it's not enough. One can only take so many songs about "hoes."

i think different parts of tha south had different styles. like memphis, bacc in tha day, they spit fast and WERE really lyrical and jus hard. like killer type songs. miami was more booty shaking. and GA was more playa style rap. then texas is more like slow, mixed with some west coast flavor. so i think tha south is tha most diverse, which is a good thing

(part 3) were inspired by & followed after the southern rappers that did care about good lyrics and being artful. You have Big Krit, Killer Mike, Alot of mcs from north carolina (excluding petey pablo), chamillionaire, z-ro, STS and cunninlyguists. Granted u have a few mainstream southern rappers that can rhyme and have substance in their music like ludacris (before battle of the sexes) and TI. All in all, based solely on the fore fathers of southern hip hop, it should be more respected.

I totally agree with Myke though, for me some of my favorite hip hop artists happen to be from the south (Geto Boys/Scarface, Outkast) but out side of a select few especially in recent years the south is hard to defend because like Myke said for the most part the south contributes nothing to the culture. To me hip hop done right is art it should move me and make me think, but the south has sadly come to represent everything wrong with hip hop now.

Yes, that stuff is getting played in L.A. and N.Y. The south deserves respect, but they aren't equal participants. All places have contributors that really don't have much to contribute, but the way the southern rappers learned to make money is not one that's supported by the community at-large. Basically they were taught that cookie-cutter rap sells. I remember hearing song after song about strip clubs when the south was coming up. I just wish they'd switch-up more.

Certain regions will give more credit to the South than others. looking at it as objectively as possible, most regions give respect to Outkast, Geto Boys, DJ Premier (who is from Texas). now, you have Cunninlynguists, H.O.J., J. Cole, Big K.R.I.T., Jay Electronica who tend to get critical praise from many regions. I think the artists that crossover the best to NYC are the ones that sound the most East Coast, like Jay Electronica. Myke got it right, the lack of balance is fucking things up.

No I don't listen to Ross or Kelly much (Hustlin' and Wild Boy are guilty pleasures tho) but I don't see their music as being on the same level artistically as a Gucci Mane or a Waka Flocka. I still begrudgingly feel that Gucci and Waka have a place in hip hop, but my point is that for better or worse Ross and MGK are at least trying to be good rappers and show that the south is not just jumping on an easy money wagon.

@PoomanHood Honestly, it may sound weird, but the fact that Waka admits he's not a good rapper is part of the reason I allow myself to enjoy his music. To me it means that I don't have to be concerned with people liking his stuff since it's not meant to be an example of the best hiphop has to offer. It's just bottom of the barrel pump up music. People might like it for a time, but they'll return to lyricism in due time. And it is slowly becoming popular to be lyrical again like Royce says.

Jay Elect on the other hand was heavily influenced by many rappers outside of the south plus hes lived & honed his skills in other cities like philly, detroit and new york and that is very obvious when listening to his music so thats the reason i didnt instantly mention him, and yeah hes the truth!

@mykectown because the creative ones get overlooked just for being "dumb". people think soulja and waka are the same artists. when in reality one (soulja) just bites whatever style or sound is hot and makes tracks, whereas waka created a unique sound and style and people followed his trend. but no one looks at it that way.

The progressive Southerners for whatever reason are not the ones that the media choose to display. They choose to display the most country backwards bumpkin types. So since that what everyone associates with the South, then everything in relation must be akin to that. Like Mike said, it's the radio's fault for perpetuating this, but it's also the rappers fault for everyone not taking a collective stand against ignorance, which can be said for any coast rap music comes from.

@chicagomycity I think it is too, slowly. They're just needs to be an influx of lyricist in the mainstream who refuse to compromise to the major labels that either would want them to dumb they're lyrics down or have them rap on the most poppy shittiest beats.

I from Greenville N.C.,smack dead in the middle of all the styles of HipHop, i personally listen to cats like Mos,Common,Talib,Madlib, JDilla,Blu,Exile,DOOM,Tribe,LittleBrother, and its like how could you listen to cats gucci , wacka and wayne (mainsteam) ect. when you've been exposed to real HipHop in its purest form, for me it's pretty much impossible to listen to mainstream,I thought Hip Hop was mcin',breakin', realdj's graffiti kidz,beatkidz,most mainstream artist need there own genre...
