Interesting. Speaking as an American bride, here in the US, anyone can be legalized to officiate marriages. So, if you want a friend or family member to do that for you and have it be legal, you can. Also, religious ceremonies don't have to be in a religious building to be legal. It's interesting to learn how different cultures do things.

Absolutely blows my mind that a celebrant wedding in the uk isnt a legal ceremony!!! We're having one in Australia (I'm Aussie), and it's 1000% legal. Pretty sure all you need is the paperwork to be signed within an hour of the ceremony and 3 sentences to be said and boom, job done! :)

I know right. Fingers crossed it changes over here soon. It is legal in Scotland but not England sadly ☹️

I come from a Christian background and my fiancé not so much. To have a mix of both, we are debating between a civil ceremony or celebrant first, followed by a wedding blessing in a church on the same day where we can pick our hymns and readings. Not your usual approach but we think it works for us :D Thanks for your video.

@@rachelyue6007 aww that's lovely to hear! ❤ May I ask what words of advice you may have for this? I've created a rough timeline of the day where we have the first ceremony at 1pm followed by pictures and canapes. Then a 3.30pm blessing for 40 mins to come back to the reception for wedding breakfast etc.. Was yours a similar format?

@@PeggyPearlB we had a very similar timeline, except that my photo session went a bit long, and some older relatives couldn’t find there way between places in time…my advice would be minimise the travel in between places, like having your wedding breakfast near your church blessing, or have your civil ceremony close to your church blessing.

I didn’t realise you couldn’t choose your registrar, that’s very interesting! I love the idea of a celebrant led wedding and I’ve witnessed one in Scotland a couple of years ago and it was so gorgeous and perfect but obviously it’s legal there so no extra faff to do before/afterwards. I’m in England and I hate the idea of having a lovely celebrant led ceremony but it all being kind of “fake” because it’s not actually showing the moment you’re getting legally married. I know it’s not a big deal for lots of people and my fiancé is keen on the celebrant led option but I’m weirdly hesitant for some reason. I also think it would cost more because it’s so personalised and also you’d have to do the registry office bit as well and pay a fee for that (and extra time) This is not something I expected to feel so conflicted about 😂I always thought it was religious or non religious but it’s more than that because the price for having it at a licensed venue and in the registry office is hundreds of pounds which seems crazy to me but I don’t want to feel like my wedding ceremony is a performance, I want it to be real and for my guests to actually be watching the moment we legally become husband and wife 🤷‍♀️

I know I am super biased, but I did have a humanist ceremony before I ever became a humanist celebrant, and I promise you that your celebrant ceremony will not feel like a performance. It will be full of sincere love and authentic thoughts that reflect you both. If anything, it will feel more "real" than the legal ceremony. Mine certainly did! Have a wonderful time, whatever type of ceremony you choose xxx

My boyfriend and I love the idea of having a wedding without actually legally getting married; I think that's called a commitment ceremony? :) Thank you for this video!
