I took some photography classes online and the professionals/teachers would always say in terms of wedding photography, people who shoot weddings are Wedding Experts with a camera. Yes you are a photographer but you're a wedding expert first and foremost.

Exactly. Weddings are a whole different beast and you can't just approach it as a photographer.

Vetting the mother of the bride may be just as important. I had Mom come in twice, asked the same questions six different ways, complained about the deposit, then called back with more of the same questions again. On the third call she tried to negotiate the deposit down. Seriously. I told her that the date was now taken and no longer available. She was very upset saying that she was going to sign a contract and that she should’ve been given first right of refusal…. And no , I did not have another couple sign. I just had had enough of her!

Thank you so much for this video. I had a Bridezilla years ago that made me walk away from wedding photography. I definitely see though she was wrong and had bad expectations I was WAAAYYYY too in my feels. You are so right that photographers deal with the brunt of other vendor's mistakes. For me it was a woman who received a bad tan and wanted me to just correct it in editing. She most definitely got her tan too close to the wedding and I felt like she was trying to get me to dang near change her race in photos! I responded well but then fully stepped away. Fast forward with more maturity and clarity I've jumped back into weddings and am fully transparent and up front with my amazing couples. It makes a huge difference. Also my contracts are even more solid so that helps lol!

This is very great advice! This helps a tone! I’ve been wanting to dive into weddings more as I’ve been told I’m great at customer service and have a few weddings that went really well. Only thing stopping me is the contract itself… I don’t know how to make a decent one that covers me properly… the lack of a proper one has caused me to turn down a few weddings.

Hey John thanks for your video! Tip number 4 is my personal favorite of the whole 6 here. It's really hard sometimes to just take a step back and take a bird's eye view. The artist comes out sometimes more than he should just when it comes to the business itself! Great work you do and very good video. Have you ever considered a livestream BTS with a wedding to start! Just 100% Real as the things come! Would be very interested. Just a little thought-provoking! Best regards Champ

Outstanding video..! I just had a Zilla... I've shot 682 weddings to date since 1994, and have had only 5 Zillas.. and strangely, 2 this year.. I think they see pictures on Pinterest and have an unrealistic expectation of how their wedding pictures will look like... not understanding those were taken by studios who use those images as their main marketing image from hundreds or thousands of weddings .....OR those are done for Bridal Fashion Shoots, with Models posing as wedding couples.. I personally know a model who appears to have been married 50+ times.. Many of those photos for bridal fashions appear in the photographer's portfolios advertising their skills in wedding photography... but that's false advertising, because they were taken under controlled conditions, with modeles, experienced in posing, and without the stresses of the day, including alcohol, family issues, schedule times often running late, people not showing up/ late.. weather issues, etc..etc.. and then along comes the Bride to be, shopping on Pinterest for stuff for her wedding, and sees these amazing pictures..... and has the expectation that their wedding will magically be just like those... Why not, after all, we are professional photographers, right..? smh..... sigh...

Have a contract - make it very detailed while being easy to understand (simple and non-ambiguous words) as sometimes we will just need to hold our ground. Whenever clients say "i thought you said..." the contract is always the reminder we point them to.. rarely happens but there will be those few 'zillas'. Good Tips John.

This this this, one of the things I have on my website and in my emails is that I'm a documentary style photographer, I'm going to get some fire portraits and some family shots but I'm there trying to document your day. This helps with the couple and honestly the couple helps me cause they'll take great aunt frieda who wants a picture with everyone in the venue and tell her leave the photographer alone he's doing his job lol.

Amen! We've had frustrated couples. Worst was bride, groom, mother--in-law - zillas combine! (Key was to get the bride first, groom and others will follow) Photography as a business is 80% communication/customer service and 20% the actual photo shoot. This is where a lot of new and aspiring photographers come short. They just come in and just expect to shoot, whereas the grunt work is building the trust and rapport with the client. As you mentioned, set expectations. Treat the couple to dinner, explain the process, show previous work examples, tell a funny story. Build that relationship. You will not only get a happy client but a client who will trust and refer you.

It all breaks down to communication. Having constant and open communication with couples, whether its for a wedding or for any other shoot, having that open communication will make your job SO MUCH easier! That's what I have found is the best approach!

Back years ago in the film days I met face to face with potential customers at the studio. After the initial greetings and a chance to size them up, I would ask them to confirm their wedding date. I’d then say “I know there was another customer interested in that date”. Let me check our appointment book to make sure they didn’t confirm.” I’d walk to the counter and check. If it was a potential bridezilla, I’d tell them the other couple called back and confirmed. If I was interested, I’d tell them the date was still open. This would plant a seed of urgency to close that day. Looking back I know it was somewhat passive-aggressive, but it was effective. I had very few bridezillas.
@jbivphotography
@jbivphotography 2 года назад
Thanks for sharing that story. Definitely a bit passive aggressive, and I wouldn't take that route, HOWEVER I totally understand. Sometimes the customer journey is the most important part and if that worked out for you it's not that bad. Aside from kind of picking and choosing your couples.

Great advice John. I had a couple unhappy once say "oh some of the photos are just not that good quality." It got my feelings up and was hard to deal with. I thought my work was somehow really bad and had to look back over it a few times just to remember objectively the work was good because it influenced my memory. In this particular case I suspect they were disappointed half the guests couldn't come because of various Covid reasons. I had to shoot tele for a lot of the reception to avoid showing swathes of empty tables. I was able to make them happy because I secretly shot hybrid and gave them a beautiful highlight reel to keep. I won't always have that ace in the hole but it helped, and I suspect this particular couple hadn't looked to my portfolio much. I also modified my contract to make quantities of photos clearly "a guide because every wedding is different." After some discussion, They angled on to this because I had addressed every other complaint. I also suspect they were trying to find a way to recoup some wedding costs.
@jbivphotography
@jbivphotography 2 года назад
Thanks for sharing. Yeah that's something that tends to happen which is what I was talking about. When the couples feels a certain way about their other vendors or the wedding day itself it usually effects how they'll view the photos. Which is unfortunate. Sounds like you dealt with it extremley well which is awesome. Having ace's up your sleeve is always a great option.
