Thank you so much for this! I was asked to photograph a wedding in about a month. I've never done a professional shoot with a professional camera so am cramming like crazy and trying to learn this camera as quickly as possible. You're help is much appreciated!
Great work!... Can you discuss when/how often to use flash during a reception. Sometimes I feel like I'm a distraction, but I still want to capture all the moments
With my switch to mirrorless I find myself using flash less and less. Tho my friend Sam Hurd still uses it a lot because he likes the look of it. For me personally, I only use flash when the quality of light is bad or there’s something I have to fix. If the quality of light is good but it’s just dark, I just shoot everything high iso at f1.4. I’m fine to at least 12,800iso with cameras these days
I bumped into this video and it is great tutorial and I've learnt a lot from you. I just want to confirm that you did all those indoor shots without a speedlight or any light other than the existing lights.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience in wedding photography. This year in summer I'm going to have my first wedding to shoot and your videos will give me the safety not to suck. Looking forward to to learn a lot more from you.
Manual with auto iso all day. I also started doing the af on button, mainly because in darker settings I felt like it would get close enough for a picture but still try to hunt, so bursting a few pictures one was bound to be in focus
Thanks a lot. One of the best wedding photography videos ever. I have a question though. What focus mode you use for family formals and when the bride is getting in or couple going out? Usually those scenes are very fast and auto face detection may focus on someone else other your main subject as there are many people at different distances. Do you still use auto face detection for those situations? Also, I know you take a lot of awesome landscape photos? What’s your auto focus mode for those ones too?
Hi Taylor, thanks for the info. Do you by chance know how to turn off eye and face focus on the Sony cameras - I have a9 and a7rV. I try to get ring shots or vows and get the officiant's face. Thanks for any help.
Naive Question - When exactly you click when you are in Servo mode? If my subject keeps on moving, by the time I click focus plane would change .... or you press the back button along with shutter button?
When you keep AF button pressed focus plane walks on your subject, moving is not a problem, when you click the shutter button on an on.This is the benefit using the AF-Butten. Greets.
I switched from a 20mp to my 110 mp GFX 100S camera and for weddings the big advantage is the cropping factor. I can shoot my primes and if I need to crop I end up with a 20mp pictures (+ or -) without using not so fast primes. and the GF 80 1.7, 110 2.0 and next year 55 1.7 lenses are amazing.
I generally thought the rule of thumb for group shots was f5 to 7, I see you as you say pretty much shot at 2 the whole time. why would I ever shoot it at 5 to 7 if I can still get them all in focus and get as much light in as I can with an f2?
If everyone is on the same plane of focus it should technically be fine at any aperture. If there’s a second layer of people I’ll go down to 5.6 or 8 depending on my distance from them
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto right so if they are all on the same plane its fine, but if I'm adding different levels into the mix up it to allow the depth to get bigger and focus everyone ?
Some asked me to do the photography at their wedding, but later decided that they'd switch to a receptionesque wedding at a venue. They still want me to do the photography, but it's no longer the scary terrain. My thing is this... My current kit is an a7C with a 24mm 2.8, 50mm 1.8, and a 16-35mm f4... I was considering grabbing anl 30mm f 3.5 MACRO so that I can swap it to 45mm and grab the super close up details. Is this kit good enough to pull off the task? No video involved btw, and I'll be visiting the venue for a feel of the space and lighting
Hi! I am struggling to find the right lense, right setting and right angle to take people around the table when eating. Let’s say a round table of 10 people. Can you help? Thanks a lot. Thomas . Geneva
I love watching your videos, I’ve just upgraded from Nikon D750 to Nikon z6ii. I have a 24-70 G lens and I’m suffering really bad motion blur (the lens has no VR) I keep my flash on but can’t get shutter speed high for some reason, can you advise me Taylor?
loving your work and style and these videos are great I have a question I have an 85 1.2 but wonder either go for the 28 - 70 rf or a 70 - 200 as getting a few weddings coming up now as just using the 24 105 at moment. thank you in advance. Vince
love your videos! but I must ask if these images are post-processing? i'm asking because I'm wondering how some of these indoor images are coming out well with good exposure when the shutter speed is so fast and the ISO is so low. I don't know the lighting is in these indoor shots but I've been in similar environments and if I tried to shoot at 1/800 with ISO 125, the image would just be so underexposed. anyway, keep up the great work! learning a lot from you because you give more details. I see a lot of photography channels talk in generalities and seem more like pep talks.
Hi Taylor, very interesting and informative video. With the Canon 5DIV, shooting outdoor, sunny day, will I need such a high ISO? I usally try not to go over 800 with 85 1.4 and 24-70 2.8. Any thoughts will be much appreciated. Thank you so much for sharing your video's.
What I don't understand is if you already "lockup" your Aperture at 2.2 or Wide Open why not shoot in Aperture Priority mode and be more focused on getting the right shots instead of twisting the dial on and on ? Is there a difference that I'm missing between AP mode and Manual Mode with the AP fixed ?
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto I was curious if there is a technical difference between them or more exactly if one is better than the other just for photography, not talking about video. Don't you think that in AP mode with ISO set to Auto will give you faster reaction time if needed ?
Yep! It’s a great camera. Happy it’s at the price it’s at as well. The 1.8 primes are also incredibly good. As well as the Z 24-70 f2.8 is probably one of my favourite lenses ever made
Hi, I love your viedos, i found you because i am choosing between D780 vs Z6II, I have 5 F lenses that I love (sigma art, nikon g ...), and at this moment I dont have money for Z lenses (I own D750 + D610) so i will be using FTZ if i am going to Z6II. I am looking for a new body because one of my clients want i little bit of video, but longterm, but 90% of my work is photography and I think its time for upgrade of body for me. I do a lot of events and sometimes weddings, I will be using my D750 as second body. Is there a huge diference between AF from D780 aZ6II (accuracy, speed ... ) and also count in FTZ at the start. My thinking is, that if i will go for D780, it will be my last dslr, i do not plan to buy another lenses (i dont need to) and for a couple more years i use my F lenses , and after that i would be looking for ml, with new lenses and everything. What do you think about that ? (I can have D780 with DJI for same price as Z6II with FTZ, so with batteries, new cfe card and reader is Z6II more expensive, and i dont even count Z lenses or that dji. Thanks for reply (probably sorry for my english, it is not my native language)
I shoot everything in M on a DSLR with BB focus through the viewfinder without ever checking my histogram, as I'm super hardcore. When you've shot a wedding on a film SLR with only around 30 shots that you have to nail, everything else is easy.
What program are you using for your files/post processing. It’s not LR so just wondering. Love your videos and thank you for putting such great content out there to help new people in the business as well as people who need some new prospective.
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto thanks! Ya it didn’t look like LR. I hate how slow LR is to cull and was wondering if there is a better/faster option out there and saw you used something else. Thanks again!! I look forward to all your videos.
Question: I’m on the Canon R6 set to Auto White balance White priority. When shooting auto white balance the white balance will fluctuate slightly within the exact same indoor environment because of fluctuating window light. If you set the white balance to a specific value afterwards when in Lightroom or Affinity Photo I found that the white balance on the set of photos tends to be a bit off when comparing the photos in the set and still needs tweaking sometimes, even if I just left the auto white balance settings the set of photos isn’t as consistent as I would like. Are there any tips for getting more consistent white balance in a series of photos when this happens? This is all for personal use and I’m not a professional in any way but any time saved when trying to create a cohesive set of images would be awesome because I take weekly and monthly photos of my son in the exact same room but time and seasons change so it can show in my images BUT I also have this problem at family holiday gatherings. I also find that if I adjust them all individually I will start warm and end up cooler towards the last image in the series (or vice versa). Thanks for any input! 🇨🇦
That’s a hard one. I do my best to keep it as consistent as I can when including light sources. But if that’s out of your control, it’ll always be a bit of a pain to white balance cohesively. I typically use the dropper to select a white or grey spot in the scene and make sure that the selected spot is also the same lighting as your subject. If that makes sense? Basically I try to keep my subject consistent and don’t worry too much about other elements. That said, you can also use the new Lightroom masking tools to auto select your subject and change the rest of the scene in white balance without effecting your subject. It’s pretty crazy how good it is. I’ll have a video out this month or early next month on it!
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto I haven’t used the dropper tool before but the room has white baseboards and light grey walls so maybe I can try that trick. I’ll check some videos on RU-vid about that and if you have a video explaining the process I’ll try to find it. I’ve been taking photos for a while but still struggle with my editing. I was using Affinity Photo on my iPad but got a trial of Lightroom with a hard drive I bought and really like some of the features in Lightroom. Don’t like the monthly payment part of it but might give it a shot for a year to give it a real shot because certain things seem way easier and quicker than Affinity photo.
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto Thanks, that's my favorite one. Good info on the automatic white balance setting, I find myself moving around a lot during events and find manual white balance a drag.
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto my Sony a7iii and riii don’t focus very well during dimly lit getting ready or reception.. it really bothers me I bought the native 24-70 this year and it’s a lot better than the Tamron. It’s still fickle
