It is, unfortunately it’s only for competitive DJ’ing nowadays which doesn’t even make that much money, today you hardly can be a turntablist or scratch, I still know a couple DJ’s who scratch, but it isn’t as popular unfortunately.
Pre-gig play is my favorite. Guests come in "are you gonna do that at the reception?" "No. The bride was very specific that she wanted me to ONLY play this Spotify playlist she sent. I have no idea why Im even here."
The resident dj of the large club near me (900p capacity) still goes around with such a setup, even at festivals, it's more organic for him, even though he doesn't scratch often. But he's a hiphop dj first and foremost, still is sometimes asked to be the accompanying dj for rappers here and there. I remember how I didn't understand, almost 10 years ago, why this guy stays up in his room and practices all day, it sounded boring to me :)) But look where he is now ! Always selling out at the largest club, weekly radio show, doing all the biggest festivals in the country..
