Earlier this year I swapped out my P7MC PW for the 46º Milled Grind 4. I had it bent 2º strong to 44º. All the rest of my P7MC irons are also bent the same amount, from the 9 to the 6. For my 3, 4, and 5 I use the P770 with stock lofts. I'm 66 years old and need the extra length on my shorter irons. I love this pitching wedge configuration. I am so accurate inside 100 yards it is just crazy good. I call it my par saver and birdie maker. I also play 48, 52, and 56 degree MG 4 wedges. The 56º btw, is the Tiger Woods model and it is freaking fantastic, I love the bounce. This seems to be the best wedge set up for me playing on the tight lies on the Bermuda of south Texas.

I started playing in the early 80's. Even then I noticed that the BLADE or CAVITY back PW went further than an identical loft WEDGE (50*). I had to choose between short game versatility (wedge shape) or distance (set PW). Nowadays the PW is really my old 9 iron in loft so the SET PW is a no-brainer. The dilemma (for me) shifts down to the A wedge. I have both types and will choose based on course conditions.

Really interesting comparison. I'm personally a fan of a set wedge but I think it depends on the set you play, im currently gaming 718 AP2's and love the set wedge. I think if I played 770s or something with a bit more help I'd opt for an MG4 at the right loft

Love this video chris. I have actually had to strengthen my 770 pw but rest of set weakened for gapping. With gw I did this test and went for specialist wedge over 770

I prefer even having a set matched (JPX Tour) GW and only 2 proper wedges... definitely would never go the other way to 4 wedges

Same. My 54 and 58 do a good amount of work but I like less options with wedges and that has been helpful for me.

I'll just keep my p770 pw and my callaway cb weges for around the green. Every club in my bag is taylormade except my wedges, taylormade needs to offer a cb wedge that is forgiving.

Trottie my 770's AW is @ 51 degrees. Take a 52 MG4 and weaken the loft? Dude you went all in with Adidas?

hey mate. Yea the adi thing has been most of my career if I'm being honest. I just gained momentum on camera with Nike initially. Right the AW v 51 bent. Keep in mind you bend a 51 up you add bounce, might not be ideal. Hate to say it but the 54 or the 56 might be a better option. Launch monitor testing time

At what level would you have someone switch their set gap wedge for a specialty wedge? I have p790 4-AW as a 10 handicap. As my chipping has gotten better I wanted a gap wedge to give me more options

If your not scratch you don't need these wedges. Buy some cb weges or something, this is just a gimmick that 99% of golfers don't need.

1) you're asking the question so you're getting close to specializing in this area 2) Look at your gapping and control. Both FW and Rough 3) Your AW will be a certain loft. Measure that and work off that loft. Know that 1* is about 3 yards in distance.

Looking at new irons and was considering when to start with the specialized wedges typically I do iron set to G then do S and L in specialized. I’m almost never doing a full swing with S and L so the difference in shaft doesn’t really matter, but how do you mitigate the shaft difference on a pitching wedge which you definitely still have to do full swings compared to likely heavier and for me stiffer shafts in your irons?

Sorry to say it but for 99% of the golfers and for 99% of the shots there is absolutely no way any of those wedges will out perform a Cleveland cbx style wedge. The vsole with almost zero offset is a real game changer. And it's half the cost new. Even the new cbx4 with its inflated price easily out perform any pw offering from any OEM

Agree, I use taylormade irons amd woods and putter, but had taylormade wedges for about a year before I figured out they are way to unforgiving and replaced them with callaway cb wedges. Taylormade is messing up by not offering forgiving wedges. You can't go wrong with cleveland cb wedges either.

I’m sure that 1° = 1 yard. 3 paces is about 3 yards for me or 9 feet.

Generally, there’s a 4* difference between each iron and the gapping works out at 10-15 yards difference. That means it’s about 2.5-4 yards per degree of loft change 😊
