Thanks Marvin. There aren't actually set proportions as such, more of a range, in which I've picked the middle of what I could find. Lovely joint, and very sound.

Hey Mitch, a heartfelt Thank You! For taking up this challenge! Thanks to you, I feel I can tackle this joint now with greater confidence. You, of course have sailed through this task with flying colours. A pleasure to watch, and learn, and study...you are a true Gent! Thanks again, Joe ( Norfolk )👌😉

The placement of the scarf is beast not over the post,because it’s the top of the deflection ❤. Better than the center of the timber
@georgewhitehouse8630
@georgewhitehouse8630 6 месяцев назад
All the old frames,that have seen,locate the scarfs above the brace . The top plate is like an invisible wave. And above the post is the top of the deflection

Nice technique! I plan to try this to “stretch”. Some fence rails from 11’ to about 14’. Great explanation of the layout method, thank you!

"Pad" saw was a new term for me. I had to look it up. In the US, called a keyhole saw. Glad to see the joint made. Not to complex. Thanks.

Mitch: I'm afraid I won't be able to practice this joint now. I wish I could. I"m between shops and most all of my tools are all in storage. While in this phase of life I have watched a lot of YT and I'm definitely interested in moving more towards hand tools. I think I have missed out on a lot. Thanks for sharing these techniques with us. Cheers from Arizona.

By cutting both mating surfaces at the same time from a single piece of wood it certainly makes it easier. Would like to see it done from two separate pieces to make it more interesting.
@mitchwoodwork

Apart from there being two identical cuts rather than one, I don't see any difference. Am I missing something

@mitchwoodwork

Cheers Arnold. All you have to do is repeat the marking out for each piece. Since you end up with waste on the end of each piece, the saw cuts can all be done with a panel saw - big advantage

@kimsmet-woodworksbangalore7343
So, you cut one piece of wood into 2 to join them 😀. Anyway it's nicely done but the approach would be totally different if you need to join 2 separate pieces of timber
@mitchwoodwork
@mitchwoodwork 5 лет назад
You would only need to mark out the same on the two pieces, otherwise the same
@johnyb9884
@johnyb9884 Год назад
Not the same, but similar. More difficult to cut 2 different pieces of lumber than 1 piece. I spent lot of time extending 2 headers (6x8) of Doug fir. It took time to make the 2 cuts match up so the joint was tight

would be very interesting to see numbers on the max force the joint can take before and after.
@mitchwoodwork
@mitchwoodwork 4 года назад
It would, but if course you can only do a destructive test once. I can stand on this joint suspended horizontally, and for sure I could have done so on the initial post.
@linusyootasteisking
@linusyootasteisking 4 года назад
@@mitchwoodwork correct indeed! But i am curious if it is 99% or original or 50%. I cannot imagine the joint tolerating more force than the unmolested wood. Great video!
@mitchwoodwork
@mitchwoodwork 4 года назад
@@linusyootasteisking in most cases I'd agree. But maybe there is a severe defect in the post which makes a very weak point. Cut that out and splice the two.

Mitch : could you have made the key hole not tapered and use 2 keys tapered ?
@mitchwoodwork
@mitchwoodwork 3 года назад
Yes indeed you could. Like the additional tenons, there may be situations where you couldn't do it, such as if you don't have access to both sides when assembling.

Excellent video. My question is what direction the scarf cut should face when I replace the repaired porch post? I read from another online forum that "the plane of scarf should be perpendicular to the deck ledger or deck beam".
@mitchwoodwork
@mitchwoodwork Год назад
I think I understand what you're saying. My take would be that the weather side of the post should have a single joint line, with the joint continuing upwards a little. This would prevent water running into the joint.
@whirled_peas
@whirled_peas Год назад
Not sure why people cut this variation of scarf. It should be hooked (AKA tabled) whereby the two pieces have full contact with the wedges. If the wedges are in a groove like so, only half the wedges are engaged. It’s very pretty but inferior to the hooked variation (trait de jupiter)
@gunterschone8402

Nice video, Mitch. Wow, the connection looks great. Well, you made it out of one piece now, with two pieces it looks a bit different. There you can record it twice, and it works without drilling. :-) wish a nice weekend and a nice sunny Pentecost (do not know if it's your holiday)

Would that joint typically be glued or just wedged dry?
@mitchwoodwork

Dry. As with similar joints the wedge should be checked while any acclimation takes place to make sure it's snug

@mitchwoodwork
@mitchwoodwork 6 лет назад
Quite possible - name rings a bell. Guy who asked me to do this sent a link to a video of a timber framer doing a similar joint. Could that be him?
@ikust007
@ikust007 3 года назад
Finally : a « position » small tenon on each piece would be useful …?
@mitchwoodwork
@mitchwoodwork 3 года назад
Yes that could be useful, unless it needs to be installed sideways.
@ikust007
@ikust007 3 года назад
@@mitchwoodwork …why? Sorry I à missing the point :( for the beauty ?
@mitchwoodwork
@mitchwoodwork 3 года назад
the tenons could prevent the joint separating sideways (handy in most situations), but if you need to install a section between two fixed beam ends, you would need to assemble it sideways, and the tenons would prevent that.
