Reacting to the cello playing and cello music in Netflix's Wednesday, from "Paint it Black" by The Rolling Stones to Vivaldi's Four Seasons. You can hear a lot of influence from Elfman's Batman score too. As for people not knowing your instrument.... you tell people you play the cello, they know what you're talking about. After I say "timpani" it's usually followed with " kettle drums" after I see their dull uncomprehending eyes.

I'm not sure if you've heard of a cellist named Kevin Olusola. He has been playing since he was a child and won some competitions as a student. When he was in college he developed a technique of beatboxing while playing cello (celloboxing). That led to him being recruited to provide vocal percussion for an a capella group called "Pentatonix". He has been with Pentatonix for over 10 years now, mostly beatboxing and singing, but he plays cello on some of their songs. He has his own RU-vid channel (KO - Kevin Olusola) where he posts arrangements of classical and pop music, solo and with other musicians. Here is his version of Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" where he is looping his cello and singing and playing with the looped recordings. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nyYG70aM9Fw.html

About audio quality: Acoustic panels, even removable, on at least 2 perpendicular sides of the room and possibly on the floor if there is no carpet, can greatly reduce reverberation. It's better for the spoken voice, but obviously for the music it's an artistic choice so at the player's discretion!

I actually really like how in the show it's played "less lively and more perfect" because that sounds very much in tune with Wednesday's personality. Let's not forget there are hands running around, magicians, monsters... so it's not too long stretch to believe Wednesday playing in an impossible way.

Being a Finn, Apocalyptica has always been a part of the "normal" music, but they still blow me away with their live shows. They are just that skilled with their instruments. They somehow manage to isolate the sounds so well as well as match each others' pace, that you actually hear every single note crisply while it still maintains the overall melody. Absolutely recommend their gigs!

During my teen years I would practice cello for 5-6 hours per day, but never going through 4 hour lessons. Hard to imagine she could have lessons that long. She’d have to have natural talent no matter what. I also used to love when movies or shows featured cellist characters. The 80s featured a number of movies and shows such as Ghostbusters, Electric Dreams, Micki and Maude (sp?), Fame (of course with Lori Singer) and Witches of Eastwick name a few. I had gone to an arts HS as a teen and recall doing fundraising to go on the music exchange trip. The violinists copped out, so I went with the band but didn’t bring my cello…. I was the “cello mascot” and only got to watch the band perform. Kudos to Jenna Ortega for her bow hold and her brief attempts at vibrato.

I was nodding along enthusiastically when you talked about how great it was to hear the cello being given that room to breathe and show off how many sounds can be made! Whenever I hear a piece really showcase the cello, I'm always amazed at how one cello can sound like a handful of different instruments. The range of sounds is can make is really incredible, even as a non-cellist who is only listening and appreciating someone else's playing, so it's really cool to hear all those different playing methods broken down by someone who is an actual cellist and is really familiar with the instrument. I stumbled upon it while just listening to RU-vidrs play the cello, because I absolutely love the sound of the cello, but I know nothing about the technicalities or what would be considered a good or a bad cello player, 😅 so I was delighted to find your video and feel like I was able to get to know the cello a little more by understanding the way, cello artist, like yourself, view the instrument, and how the artist who is playing the cello, feels about the instrument itself. I know that in this video, you are just enjoying and explaining the movie and all that stuff, but I hope you know that the why you talk about the instrument, and the fact that other people are now able to see the cello on a broader spectrum and by that I mean millions considering the movie has been seen a shit ton of times 😂 but your face lights up like no other. 🤩 as a first time viewer to your channel. If they do a second season, I kind'a hope Wednesday plays "As tears go by". I think it might fit in with her character, and it is another Stones song, after all. Edit: For anybody who doesn't know the song, here's one version on cello: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qf9WtFD2ScE.html I don't want a re-hash of it. The cello was always the instrument I wanted to play when I was growing up, but due to the cost and lack of teachers in our tiny northern Ontario town I ended up with a tiny quarter violin at 5 years old. It’s still my goal to one day set the time aside and learn the cello. The amount of emotion that can be conveyed through it is intoxicating and it is by far my favourite instrument. I thoroughly enjoyed Wednesday’s portrayal of playing it, and appreciate this video talking about it. Subbed. 😊

Great, great video. I am a cellist myself, and I'm a metalhead, and I suspect I'm at a similar age. I grew up watching Tim Burton films and I've got that experience that you mention of my teen years straining my relationship with my instrument... And then getting this great shock and possibilities widened upon discovering Apocalyptica. There was a life and things to do outside of classical playing?! It was a big renewal. Basically your video says exactly all of the thoughts I've had on the series relating to the cello but much better worded, how proud and excited I've been, impressed with the actress, and their really seamless matching of the soundtrack to what's happening. And the use of so much cello. I didn't expect much from the series and it's really the cello representation I've always dreamt of. Now thanks to you I can share this with my friends and hopefully give them some insight! Thanks again. And I'll definitely pay attention to your channel. Kudos to you ✨

I played cello in junior and senior high, I was a cellist to the most. Lost touch with it as also my aspirations are film. And Mr. Elfman... His MUSIC. Move me. 1989 I want to pick it up again, you are an inspiration. Subscribed! For me the cello was always the richness between high violins and the bass. Funny enough I started with guitar, piano, trumpet and then cello... I fell in love. Baroque is my heartbeat at times. And I am not a professional. One day, I will be a virtuso in one... Cheers Nicholas!

I don't play Cello but I had all the excitement and the same reaction as the characters in the show 😂💜. That bow bounce, if she actually did play that part, is extremely difficult (coming from experience trying to learn violin during lockdown) and overall absolutely wowed me. I'm more of a classical guitarist, but I absolutely lost it when I heard Apocalyptica that I had to rewind back to that part/do a double take. I can only imagine it was all Danny Elfman who chose the pieces (with some help, possibly) bc he's seriously genius. Even his own pieces with Oingo Boingo are great!

Thanks very much for being honest about not enjoying practice in your teen years. I started pretty young, stopped taking lessons in 8th grade or so because I wasn't taking it seriously enough and just felt like it was expected of me, my mom was tired of and incapable of shepherding me anymore, I didn't want to be so special, I guess now that I look at it 30 years later? Thankfully my HS Orchestra teacher reached out to the 'cello professor at my university and told him that her former principal 'cellist was at his school, but not playing. He invited me to Symphony. We played the real Star Wars score. I eventually found my way into Music Ed. So I made it through, Nicholas made it through, just don't quit entirely when it feels like you're not into it anymore. It will happen. Probably multiple times in one's life. Complicated, but a reality that we as music educators usually just try and gloss over or are afraid to mention, but confront ALL THE TIME with students in Middle School. "I just don't feel like it anymore." "It's not as fun as it used to be, or not as fun as I thought it would be." "I'm not as talented as _________" "I don't have time to practice." "I am not passionate enough about it." ... My current response to these opportunities when they arise now are hopefully a little more informed than standard advice and the more intense pipeline to professional world that is pretty prevalent (in what is usually considered a world of "high art" and "destiny" and "prodigies" and "talent" (hate that word. It's skill, not talent. Everyone can play at a much higher level than they realize, talent is not God-given, talent is developed. Suzuki said it, I've seen it, a hundred times over....)) Anyway, usually respond something along the lines of: Those feelings are normal. Scale back goals/repertoire, pacing, expectations, don't quit entirely, stay in school orchestra, take a summer off, dive into other genres, play a different instrument in school orchestra, switch to band for a while if you must, you'll be invigorated, just don't stop entirely. In time, it will feel different. Of course, some students and teachers and parents really might benefit from a harder approach and just pushing through, but that has its risks too. Just glad you said it out loud and with no judgement. "I didn't really like practicing very much." "Sometimes 'cellos don't get the most interesting parts in Orchestra." Thank you, thank you, thank you. You've helped normalize those feelings, so many students feel and think, "I must not be cut out for this." or "I'm not dedicated enough." or "This isn't fun anymore." etc... Now if we can just get Two Set to address their two or three terribly damaging and uninformed "Tone Deaf" videos, we'd be making even more progress. Check those out, they're really hard to watch, especially from two champions of music love and music education advocacy, really inaccurate and painful for me to watch. I've shared my thoughts in the comment section a couple times and started a good flame war down there. Great idea for a react video for you! Their friend is clearly not tone deaf (That's not even really a thing, for goodness sake!) and even though they're friends and are teasing nicely, they're waaaaay off in terms of how they describe his abilities (and thereby the overall abilities and societal attitudes towards music skill - especially the really intangible and difficult skills of ear training and singing!) and have added another brick in the wall in their huge and impressionable audience's minds and hearts between them and a lifetime of music skill development. Great video, thank you for your time and balanced perspective. Not really a big fan of the whole Wedensday/everything sucks/everyone else sucks so I'm angry and unappreciative about everything vibe, but I understand why it resonates and had similar feelings when I was younger, but acknowledged that there are some things to be positive about in my life. And at least they're representing 'cellos well! (I mean, being ok with your servant arranging an explosion at a school function? Uh... Sure, it's fantasy, but Wednesday also is completely real. Too real for something like this that would result in Federal charges and potentially harm or kill someone. Maybe there could have been a different way to achieve that prank that doesn't trigger everyone's already too worn mass-murder-panic buttons and not suggest yet more ways for unwell individuals to "make their mark" in history or "get back at all the squares who just don't get how much they're hurting or how messed up life really is"? We get it, we were young once too. It gets a little better as you grow, but it never gets 100% easy, the important thing is that you try to be kind to yourself and really think through the safety and impact of each heavy decision you make. Learn death metal and scream-O. Write music like the Cure. That very deliberate choice by the writers was really not helpful for our young minds who are learning the line between safe expressions of negative emotions and empathy for others, belief in the common good... I know it's pretty thin on the ground now and this was an easy way to be "cool" and build Wednesday's following/status/character, but explosion? Running crowd? Too real. Not ok.) Sorry, extra rant.

@@NotesWithNicholas I'm a little extra salty about it, granted, but as a former Elementary General Music Teacher, I was inundated with the results of our societal misunderstanding of music skill acquisition and "talent" and TwoSet really didn't address the issue in any helpful way and definitely added to the misconceptions and gatekeeping mythology of those with a certain music skill and those without, frankly not even very carefully identifying it when it presented itself. There were moments when they realized their friend surprised them, but I didn't see them apply very much critical thinking and an inclusionist/music education advocacy lens, so I take it upon myself to call that out and encourage them to discuss those videos with music education professionsals who study music learning at very high levels and great detail, there's a great opportunity for informing their public there, which they usually do so well.
