Can you use any yarn weight? I found out your yarn online and because I would like to use different set of colours I would like to know if its has to be 12ply?

Thank you! 🥰 Not sure how hot it gets where you are, but I think with breathable material, it should be fine in a cooler / colder season. You can also make it more holey by using a bigger hook.
No problem! Like you said, 4 squares is the width. So divide your desired width by 4, then work out how many stitch you need to reach that. Row count of a square is half of its stitch number.
