Great review. I have owned one for over 3 years, and I can tell you, that this thing will never be the same as a hand held string trimmer. So if you are buying it with those intentions in mind, you will be sourly be disappointed. That being said, I have a bad back, and even though it is slow going, I use it to mow my fence lines, and around my septic tanks. Tim and Christy was correct to point out the issues with the handle, I had some issues with the reaching to put it up and down, and also with it wanting to slope to for down, when I am on a hill incline. To deal with that, I bought a small actuator off of amazon, and put it on, to allow me to adjust the pitch electrically. It is pricey, but for my needs, it works really well, otherwise most of the trimming would not get done.

It's a "NO" for me! Don't think speed, or expense, or the frustration, think about the carbon footprint. Twice the size of Paul Bunyan!! Like running your single wedge splitter with a 100 HP tractor!! Trimming over my 'walker' is slow, but when I move it, I'm only wasting the little bitty weedeater motor, at idle! And I think I'm doing a better job!

I just ordered one! Let me tell you why: My dad is a paraplegic (no use of his legs) and is fully bound to a wheelchair. One of his favorite things to do is get on his zero-turn mower and cut the grass. Trimming, however, is a struggle. Trying to navigate uneven terrain while sitting in a chair and wielding a string trimmer is incredibly challenging. Even if this attachment can’t get every corner, it’ll get the lions share of the work done from the seat of the mower. This is the best solution I have ever seen to the problem we’ve been trying figure out for the last twenty years. Thank you for showing this one off today.

I'm with Uncle Alan, I think if you reposition it more forward maybe add an extension plate to the deck to get it forward and you might be able to get corners better. Good to see Christy is getting you trained up again Tim, LOL! Great video guys, love to see all the new tools you two continue to bring to us. It really is a great service to those of us who can't get to the AG shows.
@smoothlandin

Pretty cool, thank you Tim, love your videos. When you outline the lawn before you mow the main lawn, you could easily spend an extra minute trimming with this attachment. Even if it saves some of the trimming for you or a guy, I think it's a great idea. This season our trimmers will be on racks on each mower so as to trim near where we're mowing, instead of relying on a dedicated trimmer guy to do all the work, especially when we're acres away from the truck. Mounting off the deck doesnt make logical sense to me, who has thousands of hours on a zero turn. What if the trimmer was mounted at a 45* angle off of, or over the front wheel instead of the deck? Then you could easily get it in tight spots, but still trim a fence line as you mow.
@dougmeeker5647
@dougmeeker5647 2 года назад
I work for a municipality in northwest ohio. In the late 1990 we bought a Steiner 430 and the salesman who sold it to us designed one of these deck trimmers. They were meant for cemeteries and fence lines and not for finesse trimming in tight areas. He sold his rights to it in the late 2000 or very early 2010
@unclealansyard5176
@unclealansyard5176 2 года назад
Happy Easter! As a professional landscaper who did lawn maintenance I've always wanted one on like this. Only thing I would think would be mounting on the front corner for better reach and faster use. For big properties I can see this being very useful. But for landscape crews that trying to get houses done in a timely manner, it still might be faster to do it the regular way. But for large properties like yours, large commercial accounts farms, etc . But I'm very glad some came up with it
@robertbunch8362
@robertbunch8362 2 года назад
I had the same thought as you about mounting it on a front corner so it could be inserted into inside corners. The handle access issue could be solved using an actuator, like Glen did. Or, maybe a simple cable control.
@kurthanushek5520
@kurthanushek5520 2 года назад
It makes my cordless, 20V DeWalt trimmer look fast and efficient. In addition to not being able to get into inside corners, I also trim areas that are too steep for a mower or too narrow to get the mover into. I understand that it has its place for those who cannot physically handle a standard string trimmer, this could be just the ticket. Otherwise, my bet is that the novelty wears off for most people. And, don't laugh at me for my choice of trimmers. I got tired of the hassles of maintaining a two cycle trimmer for infrequent use and already use the 20V DeWalt battery platform.

Tim and Christie, happy Easter to both of you. The Peco deck mount weed eater has been out for years. I've got one in my equipment shed up on a shelf. I was a commercial property maintenance guy. I found it too slow, and not really built that well. One thing do NOT use it around a house with vinyl siding. Like all weed eaters it'll shred the vinyl. To Ron Doyle (next comment down) it's useless on a fence line, you have to crawl with it. Try the DR fence mowers. I have one I don't remember who makes it but it's called a "Post Master" Just for fence lines and around trees it's good, but you still have to go slow, but not as slow as the Peco unit.

Interesting, but the reality is it's about a $12-$13K string trimmer with the obligatory commercial zero turn included... You also cannot edge sidewalks, curbs, mulched planting beds, etc. with it as it only operates parallel to the ground. In today's world we also cannot discount the cost of the fuel to run the zero turn as compared to say a 2-stroke or battery powered trimmer. It may be justifiable for long fence rows and use around guard rails and relatively large buildings but for anything else a handheld would likely be a lot faster and less frustrating! I'm using TQ on the Spencer Lawn Care channel as a point of reference here!

Are used to live by lake and on both sides of my property I had a drainage ditch and couldn’t get the wheels to close where they would sink and in the front by the road there was a ditch also and then weeds and cats tails around the water I tried to keep cut down. I wouldn’t need to use it next to buildings or anything so I was going to use chain for the string but the deck couldn’t quite get out over the ditch and I couldn’t get close to the side dishes when there was water running which was about three months a year. that attachment is only good for fence lines, that's all it does successfully. it will work for the disabled and elderly but it takes 15 times longer to get done and takes the reflexes of a cat to accomplish. after all it was designed only for fence lines, other wise there would be a control arm you operate to move this about properly just like the control arms to operate a zero turn properly.

At my age I might not live long enough to do the trimming at that speed. I don't mind walking along to do trimming. Absolutely perfect if your mobility challenged.

Happy Easter to you and your family. I’ll stick with my Stihl FS 110 for now. Just got JD Z730M two days ago and it was my first time driving a zero turn. Naaah, I’ll stick with weed eating for now. Maybe next year, this would be a viable attachment. I would rip it off the mower now🤣

The thing looks like it'd be pretty good for long runs around trailers in a large mobile home lot or long Fence lines or It will definitely cut the handheld part down 75 to 80%. I can tell it it's better just to not even bother with trying to do the coroners but I was also wondering if you could bolt to. Piece of metal to your deck to extend it out a little further shouldn't be a problem I was also wondering about a foot pedal hit and release.

This would work for our setup (John Deere S160 Lawn Tractor) but I would additionally add a holder on the tractor for a normal weed-eater so that for the odd-ball hard-to-reach corners, I could get it done right then and there. Another improvement would be to allow the hand-held weed eater to run off of the tractor's battery (we have a weed sprayer that uses the tractors battery).

I love this idea a lot! For the ZTR, and I recognize you are trying to record, full throttle always. The hydros control everything so you lose that fine touch ability without full throttle.

Coming from a landscaper I have been looking for something like this. Looks good to use on fields for under fence lines and I also do a lot of medians for the city so this could help knock down labor for trimming around the trees and to trim the tops of the curbs as well. But Does it turn vertical to do edging along the curb ? If it does that it's a winner winner chicken dinner. I'll bite for 400 lol why pay a 3 man crew when i can do it all my self lol . Thanks for the Awesome clip .

I do not know if you can change that head but I have thought about building one for years and if I did I would use a pivot pro head. look them up they go on a normal string trimmer and they have 4 little swivels one on each side. A single piece of string doubles and gives you up to 8 lines. If the trimer is under powered you only use two sides. I have used them for years on a trimer an the string last for ever because when you get up real close to what you are trimming the line can pivot and not bend. So they do not break the line near as much as a normal trimmer. even against chain link fence they last 10 times longer or more. I do not have a huge huge area I mow but I have several things to trim around and I normally change my string every two to three cuts. Amazon sells them they are a universal head that will fit most string trimmers. I have lots of experience in metal fab so I was just going to buy a dewalt cordless 20 volt with the motor on the head and modify and mount the battery pack under the seat of my husqvarna zero. But No matter what I do if I buy or build I would want the pivot pro trimmer head. You will get 10 times the life and the strings are fixed not bump and go.

I'm neutral on it. Pros and Cons on it. I can see advantages for folks who cant get around easily, long fence rows, or things of that sort. If it helps someone be able to enjoy the outdoors, probably a good investment.

One thing I have found is to trim next to something only move the handle away from what you are trimming next to don’t try and use both handles hope that makes sense.

Happy Easter Tim and Christy! I’m thinking it would be handy around trees (or other obstacles) where they are interspersed in large mowing areas. As you pointed out, it would save carrying a weed eater all over to do a little dab at each one. Thanks for sharing interesting ideas. Blessings.

Thanks for the review. I love the idea, and never even knew such a critter existed. I noticed in the first 30 seconds that this is definitely not a workable solution. Id get a headache watching that thing hit and miss the entire path. Hopefully, someday, someone, somewhere will come up with something that really works.

My Craftsman weed-eater was designed that way with the string. Loved it! For that though, I think that arm needs to be a foot longer and longer string! Was hoping to see that large zero turn that had like 12 foot wide deck or something like that.

Intriguing, but $465 before (maybe after) discount, is a bit too steep. Would buy at $200, but I’ll keep walking the yard with the Stihl FS90R in the meantime. Christy > Tim on zero turn skill right now 😀

A couple of thoughts. 1) There is a handle thar you buy for around 50 dollars that makes holding a hand held trimmer easier while you trim. It is adjustable so I am wondering if you can make it work on this . 2) The threading is similar to push trimmers that have big wheels to move around your obstacles. Most of these types will take many sizes and styles of string. 3) Might be a fun and interesting episode to compare this to the various styles of string trimmers. Such as the push trimmers, this device, traditional hand held and a tow behind designed for atvs and lawn tractors.

That handle that might work as an extension for the trimmer is called a Darwin's Grip.

For mowing along fenceless in the pasture it would be great. Do they have a blade to use in place of the string part for heavier brush. I would think this would be better than a hand held one for intricate work, but for wide open areas along fences or retaining walls it would be great.
