Achilles Video Series - Week 0: The Injury and What to Expect
Video Series Description -
Thanks for tuning in to this video series. Throughout the next year, I will be providing weekly updates of my recovery process. The purpose of these videos is to provide a live case study on the surgical rehab process in Canada for someone who is looking to return to competitive sports. I'm 34 years old and being treated in Canada.
Summary -
I ruptured my Achilles Tendon on June 3, 2020 and it took about 3 weeks to go through the hospital system, appointments, scheduling and I finally had my surgery June 26, 2020. One of the biggest decisions you will have to make is whether you want surgery performed or not. In some cases, the rupture may be too big and tendons too far apart, in which case surgery is the only option (greater than 2cm distance) but talk with your surgeon and make a decision together based on your circumstances.
I will be providing an update later this week to show you Week 1 after surgery. I'll cover optimal nutrition for post-surgery recovery as well as advice to cope with the pain the first few days.

Hey man, I really can't thank you enough for this series. I ruptured my achilles a little over a week ago and have surgery in 2 days on Wednesday. I ruptured it doing gymnastics for fun, but I'm a dancer and I'm pretty devastated. It's wildly helpful to see others going through this that have recovered. My morning routine is also always watching dance videos on youtube and that feels kinda depressing right now so I've switched to these videos which has helped a ton. SO grateful. Any encouraging words about the surgery would be helpful. I've never had one and am very nervous.

Watching this vid at 6am in Aus after rupturing my Achilles last night playing basketball. First ever serious injury so feeling pretty flat but ty for creating this vid and giving a real perspective on what’s to come/helpful tips with this injury. Feeling motivated and ready to embrace the recovery process and get back to balling/sport in general. Cheers legend

My heart goes out to you I definitely know that feeling but after recovering from two of these now I can say that it's definitely achievable to get back to sports, I'm playing basketball again and feeling great. I make sure I stretch and strengthen them now. You got this and just be patient and know it'll take a bit of time but once it's over you almost forget it ever happened. Let me know if you have any questions and good luck with your recovery!

Yeah I definitely empathize with you. I went through it twice and don't wish it on anybody! Make sure when you do physio to also do the same exercises for your other foot to strengthen and bulletproof it. Last thing you want is to repeat the same mistakes I did and tear the other side.

Hey everybody. You all know why I am here 😅. I am sending lot of love and support to everybody here. Your video is inspiring. Thanks a lot for sharing it. I had my surgery a month ago. I'm still in a cast but got my stitches removed. In a few days, I am getting a boot. I also played basketball when injury happened. I m 39 years old now. Working two jobs, both office jobs sitting at the computer. Also, weekend worrior. When I was younger, I was an active basketball player. When the rapture happened I heard the snap and thought someone kicked my Achilles with their foot from behind. Nobody touched me though. I'm currently going through the same phases you had. It's going to be a long way, but I'll be taking baby steps to recover. Regards from Serbia.

Hi mate, I had an experience very similar to yours: Back in 2016 I tore my right Achilles tendon during a soccer game and had surgery as well. I also my hole live practice sports, mainly soccer and I didn't expect it, but it is what it is. After all the surgery/recovery/physiotherapy process, I gradually went back to doing sports at a moderate level, like going to the gym and light running at the beggining, and only after 6 years I decided to play soccer again. I obviously had some fear that I might re-injure the operated leg, but after 5 games on synthetic grass (1 per week), I started to feel very good and more physically prepared. During this period I never felt any injury or discomfort in the Achilles tendons, but in my sixth game, what I feared most happened: the tendon ruptured, but this time on the left side (my stronger leg). At the exact moment I understood what had happened, which, even though it was frustrating, made me feel a little safer because I already know the whole process. This happened 2 days ago. I have surgery scheduled for Monday (October 1st). Anyway, I just wanted to share this with you and say that the videos you make are very important, especially for people who have had this injury for the first time and kind of don't understand how it works (believe me, I went through it the first time turn). I hope you have recovered 100% and can get back to doing the sport you love, just as I have this goal when I recover again.

Hey man, hope you're healing up from your surgery and wanted to let you know that I'm 100% recovered and playing basketball weekly now for about 6 months and boxing and doing everything I use to do. At this point I never even think about the injury on the court and its as if it never happened in my mind. Except I do take extra precaution to warm up and stretch before and after the game and make sure I dont try and push myself harder until my body is in the swing of things whenever I try a new sport again.

I don't know if this will get lost in the comments or not, but I have my own experience on non surgical treatment of achilles tendon rupture. I was treated with no option to have surgery as in Denmark where I was living at the time they go more towards that type of healing, and after going through all the process of healing, at the 4month mark my achilles re-ruptured again. So if you have the chance to have surgery done I would strongly recommend it. I'm on week two now and just got into the boot. Honestly surgery is not much more painful than healing your achilles without one and it takes less time to be off the crutches so you can function better. I would strongly recommend going the surgery way either you plan on doing sports or not.

Full achilles rupture, 1.4cm separation. Day 1 post surgery. Been told to remain bed bound for 2wks, minimal activity to allow wond to heal then to have a follow up with the consultant in 2weeks where i will get my boot and start the physio process. Hoping to get back in the gym, ruptured my achilles playing football but not hardent on getting back to playing football. If i can get back to enjoying the gym and lifting heavy squating deadlifting then im good. Had 33yrs of good sporting endeavours, football, boxing, jujitsu now happy to enter a new phase in my life solely gyming and spending time with my 2 boys. Thank you for this vid Chin, its lifted my spirits and helping me stay positive cant believe your going through it a 2nd time and still plan on playing basketball somewhat competitively. Respect.
@ChiChen3
@ChiChen3 6 месяцев назад
Yes you can definitely build the strength back for heavy squatting and deadlifts. Although at first, your range of motion will be more limited for your squats as you'll lack some ankle mobility. What helped me was getting some weightlifting shoes that had elevated heels. Because both are not explosive lifts like Olympic Cleans etc, you'll have no problem getting back to lifting heavy. I've been gaming more as well, been playing Hell Divers 2 recently with friends! Wish you the best in your recovery and let me know if you have any questions throughout your process!

Hey Chi, I believe I ruptured my right achilles 5 days ago, while playing tennis. I felt exactly the kind of sensation you described - like someone hit me with a baseball bat at the back of my leg. I went to ER, they did a Thompson test on me and it was +. I’m currently waiting to get approved for MRI, and yet to see my podiatrist. They put a splint on my foot and I’m on crutches. While I don’t technically know my diagnosis yet, I’m fairly certain it’s a rupture. Partial or full. I plan to watch all your videos, as I wanna get my recovery right, because I want to return to playing tennis, ping pong and soccer, even though I’m 40. I’ll let you know once I get a definite diagnosis and see my podiatrist. Thanks for your helpful video!
@ChiChen3
@ChiChen3 Год назад
Yeah it sounds like a tear and you'll need an MRI or ultrasound to confirm whether it's partial or full rupture and then you can weigh your options. I'm back to playing sports again after two repairs and turning 37 this year! You'll definitely be able to return to sports if you want, it actually helps having that kind of motivation for your recovery.

I have no warning before the rupture, just playing casual football joggling, with some kids in the youth club i am working in... My age is 47 but with great ok shape. No overweight or inactiv life style. Working out a lot in the gym, but maybe a weekend warrior when it comes to cardio training. Looking forward to see your progress, i will take it week by week. Thank you for the video and I agree with everything so far! I just hit 2 weeks tonight, full rupture playing soccer and waiting for my surgery date. The knee scooter has been a life SAVER, I go ride on it in the mornings to get moving and still do some arm weights. It's been stressful these last 2 weeks considering I'm in my last 3 weeks of my semester and mentally I am all over the place with worry and less focus I guess. I'm super active and an athlete as well and hope to return playing soccer and volleyball on a weekly basis as well as going to the gym and hiking etc. This gives me hope and I know it is just a matter of time. I just turned 35 but feel great! I'm pretty positive it was just because of covid downtime with no leagues going on. I was running everyday but it doesn't compare to those high impact competitive sports. Thanks for your advice! Hopefully you are playing basketball by now. Patience is my new best friend! Something athletes can struggle with..

@@joonlee30 Absolutely not going to change the way I play bro lol! Man! This video is A1 bro, ngl I’m similar to you when it comes to being positive and really just not beating myself up about it. The way you handled it is perfect. Wish I seen this a month ago when it all happened cause this would have been helpful. I went to the ER telling the doctor I felt like there was a gap and it’s not normal. Bro told me that he thinks it’s swollen and that’s why it feels like a gap, I’m like nahhh no way this don’t make sense. Searched myself before hand and told him I think it’s a rupture. So when I left the hospital he recommended me to a foot doctor but misdiagnosed it . I was moving on it a bit more because he told me that and he’s a doctor at a trusted hospital so I had my doubts about thought he knew better. My surgeon told me when she did my surgery it was the worst she had ever seen, she couldn’t even get the suture together when wrapping the tendon it just get ripping out when she tried to pull me together. But she got it right. Moral is if you feel something is worse than what the doctor is saying , be careful and push so they can do as much test as they could. Idk why I told them it was my Achilles and they gave me a XRay like I told them it was my ankle or something. Everyone I hope you heal up perfect! Keep positive, you’ll be okay! I’m on month 1 and I’m staying positive although I can’t walk on it but as Chi said… “things happen”! You’ll be just fine. I recommend surgery as well and I def have people around me who helped me on a daily, thank God my lady is with me so she went the extra mile. Try to get someone if not your spouse someone who will come and help you out cause it’s important. And stay mentally strong, it gets boring but rather that than you trying to do things and not heal up properly. God bless you all

Full rupture and 3 broken toes. I’ve had multiple surgeries in the past for injuries sustained at work and sports. The closest to this is a torn rotator cuff with detached bicep and pectoral, which was about a 12 month recovery. I am a hardcore snowboarder and instructor. I was blindsided by an out of control snowboarder who hit me so hard he punctured my board underneath my right foot. I limped down the mountain and drove to the hospital. From that point on your videos are exactly what I went through. I am now in week 3 after surgery and starting PT at the end of the week. I love your videos as they are truly helping me prepare for each step. The most important point you have made so far is “patience”, which I struggle with. My only criticism of this video is your reference to age. I am 63 and have no plans of slowing down any time soon.
@ChiChen3
@ChiChen3 2 года назад
Damn sounds like quite the accident. But also sounds like you got the best attitude and motivation to recover and get back at it!! That's amazing. You'll definitely be carving up those mountains again. I grew up snowboarding as well and even taught for a couple years when I was in highschool. Just take your time and listen to your body as you recover and it'll let you know when to push more and when to slow down and let it recover before you challenge it again. The beginning month or two is going to be slow and just be patient because it'll ramp up as you start walking with your weight and then progressing to taking off the boot.

I really appreciate this video bro... I completely tore my right Achilles two days ago... I had literally almost the same experience as you where I was playing pickup basketball, went to make a pass and quick cut, heard and felt the pop. Initially thought the guy guarding me I had gotten past had kicked the back of my calf. Was HOPING that’s what happened, but after the shock wore off I knew in the back of my mind what it was... Went to the ER and it was confirmed. Anyway I have been skating in between anxiety and depression for the past two days mostly over fear of the unknown and anticipation of a long difficult road ahead. Feeling a lot of immediate doubt about whether I’m capable of getting through it. Your video helped me so much, and although I’m still scared, I feel a lot more confident that I can push through. I kept lifting with my upper body while I was recovering and in the boot. Just need a good homie to spot you at the gym and probably rack and unrack the bars for you. Deadlifts are easy to do while recovering because it doesnt require much ankle range of motion, you can even do them in the boot once youre out of heel lifts. But squats will take longer and you'll need your ankle range of motion for that especially if you want to do deep squats or at least parallel. But yeah feel free to do upper body stuff and some lower things like glute bridges and keeping your hip flexible cause it'll take a beating in crutches and a boot.

I'm 64 now and been an athlete all my life. Baseball and basketball too. I had surgery on a complete rupture of my left achilles. I'm in my 6th month of recovery and live alone as well. I started running recently and go to the gym regularly. I had the knee scooter and tried the peg leg contraption too. I almost killed myself on that thing. I also had a few nasty falls on the knee scooter as well. My goal is to hike the Himalayas in the spring in Nepal. Can't wait to get into competitive sports again. It was more painful for me probably because I'm 30 years older than you. I enjoy your videos. You are very helpful. Thanks.

Really appreciate this video series man. I’ve been so uncertain about what to expect since it happened and this is really thorough and honest compared to other videos I’ve watched. Really makes this feel less overwhelming. Fully Ruptured my right Achilles tendon playing flag football on 12/4/22. My experience was exactly like yours, thought I got kicked really hard but experienced little pain. I had surgery 12/13/22 and will be getting my splints off in two days. I am 100% the “Weekend Warrior”, as the Sunday games I played were my only real exercise each week. If you are reading this and do the same, PLEASE make sure to stretch and exercise more than once a week. I thought I was still young enough that I can get away with quick, light stretches before games (in my early-mid 20s) and I was very wrong. If you have ruptured your Achilles, I hope you have a speedy recovery. We’ll be back up and at it soon enough!

@ChiChen3
@ChiChen3 3 года назад
If you don’t have a gap and it’s only a partial rupture, you should consider non operative route. As you get older you’ll need to evaluate whether you’re planning to sports. Surgery adds a lot of complications and scar tissue so it may be best to let it heal on its own if it’s only a partial rupture. If there is a large gap then surgery is sometimes the only option.

Hey Charlie, good luck with the recovery and let me know how it goes. I definitely feel more confident with my surgical repairs and it helped with my confidence returning to sports knowing that my achilles is more secure. Just remain patient and this will all just be a distant memory a year from now. To be honest, once you're out of the boot and walking again in 3-6 months, the rest of the recovery is much smoother since you can go about your day to day activities without much thought. Sports will just take a bit longer after that.

@ChiChen3

Hey man, hope the surgery went well! At this point you can just focus on healing up before you start your full recovery. I'm basically healed up from my second surgery now and if you're as competitive as I am, which it sounds like you are, then I don't think it'll be hard for you to come back from this. The hardest part is for people to find the motivation to gain the strength back and stick to the protocol and physio exercises. I'm confident that you can get back to at least 95% to even 100% of your original strength with time like I have. In fact, after all the physio, sometimes, I feel stronger than before because my ankles and feet are used to all different angles and have more stability than when I wasn't injured yet and never did much for my ankles and feet and maybe did some calf raises on leg day.

After a little over 4 weeks post injury I wasn’t getting any better. So, I decided to go see a specialist. 5 weeks to the day of the injury I had surgery. They needed to use part of the tendon from my toe to repair. I was in a soft cast/splint for 2 weeks then into a boot…Tomorrow will be 4 weeks post surgery. I still have some numbness in my foot and toes. I’m supposed to start rehab in 2 weeks- trying to stay positive…

Hi Chi. Thanks for the video. I have a grade 3 full rupture from playing basketball with colleagues at a conference. My surgeon recommended the “jig” surgery based on where my rupture occurred allowing for only a 1cm incision and a few stitches instead of the full length cuts of 6-8 inches. I am currently on day 11 post surgery and looking forward to my next appointment in 4 days. A few things: I elected to not get the nerve block during surgery. He told me that the pain level is not as high if not going into bone, and it was not. I also elected against opioids for pain management and only use Tylenol and it has been very manageable. I find the worst part of this process so far is that when I am not on my crutches, I have to have my leg elevated. I am hoping when they remove the splint and I get booted that the need to elevate my leg is gone and I can sit normally at a desk and work. Thank you again for the video and best of luck on your repair.
@ChiChen3
@ChiChen3 Год назад
Yeah the newer surgical procedure is much better than the full length cuts. My left leg used the traditional method and my right leg used the newer method and the recovery times are much faster on the newer method because the wound takes less time to heal which also means less atrophy while you're in a splint / cast.

The best way is to strengthen and do physio on your Achilles to rehabilitate it. You’re fortunate you don’t have to deal with a tear or surgery but you should definitely work on it. Do single leg calf raises on the stairs and let yourself down super slow and controlled until you feel a stretch and then lift yourself back up. You want to build up strength and control through that full range of motion so when you put your body into that range of motion in fast paced explosive sports actions, it’ll be able to handle the force.

Thanks for this video. Helped me out. I just ruptured my right achilles on June 10...getting surgery on the 21st. I'm hoping to recover fast and plan to be diligent with rehab. I love playing bball, that's how it happened. I'm 40 people tell me to give it up but I can still ball man!

Don't give up the dream. I'm 35 now and have torn both achilles but I plan to play again. I'll just be much more careful stretching, warming up and not playing for too long when game gets sloppy.

Very helpful! I am day 2 after tearing my Achilles’ tendon the second time! Just like you! I hate this soooo much and feeling a little angry because it was a long process the first time. Both came from playing basketball and making hard moves each time. I knew right away what happened to me after it happened this second time and I was in total disbelief. I had surgery my first time and Will way my options if I want to get surgery again. I don’t want the rupture to happen again but I don’t plan on hooping ever again I just think I’m done. I never played pro or anything but all through high school and just love the game but my playing days are over.
@ChiChen3
@ChiChen3 2 года назад
Ah jeez sounds exactly like me. Although I'm 2 years post op from my second achilles repair and I'm playing basketball again and feeling like I never injured myself. Although I drive and slash a little less now. I think it depends on your tear. My gap between my achilles was too far to let it heal by itself so I had to get surgery again. If you had a partial tear then it may not be as bad and you can treat it conservatively. I just love the game too much and prefer to just get the repair over with and have the peace of mind forever after in any activities or sports I do. But it really is based on the severity of your tear and your motivations to play sports after.

Thanks a lot for this video. I fully ruptured my achilles playing basketball and it was exactly as you described it. I hope to get back to hooping eventually but I know it will be a long journey. Thanks so much for this video. I plan on watching your other vids as I progress through. I go in for surgery tomorrow. It's been a week and 2 days since I ruptured my left Achilles playing basketball with my son. I have an air boot on now and have already purchased a knee scooter. (it just seemed like the thing to do). I've also decided that I hate stairs. Lol. I'm 53 and an avid disc golfer. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of your videos. This one was very informative.

@@ChiChen3 hi man, just to let you know that I’m walking today! 5 weeks post-surgery! Even the surgeon got amazed by my fast recovery. But he check my Archellis and found everything is indeed recovered. I kinda got this feeling when I compared my condition with your video time to time and adjusted my activities during these five weeks, like removing heels. Your video helped a lot. Can’t walk to get my foot strong again and play.

Thank you Terry! I'm glad you found it helpful. I've never heard about it happening during snowboarding but that makes sense since we're on our toes carving a lot but I'd think the boots would prevent you from over stretching.. how did it happen for you during snowboarding? Did you land toeside?
@terrymcclelland2610
@terrymcclelland2610 Год назад
@@ChiChen3 I’ll say yes re toe side because I did face plant after the impact. On a snowboard forum I found a contributor who articulated my injury well in terms of the mechanics and contributing factors. If I can’t add screenshots here I’ll rewrite. I was wearing ‘step ons’ which lock the base of the boot with absolutely no give. Week 7; Out of moonboots and doing a variety of gentle WB exercises alternating between crutches and walker both in bare feet and ‘crocs’ as I wait for a pair of Hoka’s to arrive. Am in sunny NQ so have started pool exercises as well. Whilst I don’t play basketball I have connected with your journey cause the majority following your thread obviously want to continue active lifestyles which in my cause revolves around hiking, biking and kayaking.

@@ChiChen3 Copied post from ‘snowboard forum-surgeon’ ……. Unless you're hardbooting, your ankle isn't locked. Sure, snowboard boots are stiffer, which is why you don't see/hear about that kind of injury much in snowboarding. However, apply enough force on that ankle and it'll flex those boots past the point where your tendon will snap. In my case: I came down hard on a big air landing (about 40ft table), underrotated my 540 a bit (I was almost facing upwards the landing) and had all my weight on my left foot. I therefore overflexed my ankle forward by a LOT, it put tons of tension on the tendon/calf muscle and it snapped. If you read the OP's second post, it's basically the same mechanics as my rupture, except both his ankles got hyperflexed at the same time (I'd say there was less force involved in his case but since he ruptured both on the same impact, it must have been quite a strong shock/impact)….
@ChiChen3
@ChiChen3 Год назад
@@terrymcclelland2610 Yikes yeah I can picture that, definitely landing on your toes from a jump like that puts a lot of force on the achilles especially facing up the landing (similar position to a deficit calf raise). Thanks for sharing!

Great video!thanks 👍 sink baths have been working great for me. I started off showering and it was taking too much of my time and it was very difficult given that I had a tub and low flow shower head. Sink baths actually have been easy and kept me clean throughout having my boot on. It's worth a try especially if your shower is upstairs like mine

Much appreciated. You described it in great detail I definitely thought someone shot the basketball on the other side and it hit my Achilles and I went straight down. Didn't hurt that much but I knew. I stared at that gym ceiling knowing this will be a journey. On all star weekend no less. With all the pros that it happens too I wish we had better knowledge on prevention. Just like you I figured it was maybe a lack of stretching but I can't believe all these pros weren't doing their physical due diligence beforehand.
@ChiChen3
@ChiChen3 2 года назад
It's a combination of lack of flexibility and strength through the full range of motion, previous wear and tear on the achilles (microtears), and lastly sometimes just a freak accident in terms of how your foot lands and tries to push off. For NBA players, I'm sure it's more the overuse and microtears that ultimately catches up with them and mix that in with one weird misstep and that's how they tear their achilles.
@captainkrillz
@captainkrillz 2 года назад
@@ChiChen3 That actually makes sense. What's scary to me is that because there's a wide range of reasons. There's not much you can do to avoid it. Some people and stars (Kd, Kobe, the professor) for example you can draw a clear line of previous trauma. But for the majority there's a slew of factors. I broke my left ankle last year and right tendon in February of this one. I'm 40 and terrified of popping the other one. The fact that you did and so many others in these comments is a testament of will that you go back and play but also again, scares me to no end.
@ChiChen3
@ChiChen3 2 года назад
@@captainkrillz I personally think if you take the time to bulletproof your achilles by working through the physiotherapy exercises on both your recovering achilles and your other one then you have much less to worry about. The mileage and weekly abuse on your achilles are going to be far less than one of these NBA stars who clock quite a few hours on the court every week practicing, competing etc at a very very high explosive level. For us weekend warriors, I think if we put in the work on the range of motion and strength through that full range of motion, we have far less strength and explosive power to pose as much of a danger as the pros. So if we used cars as an analogy. Pros are running very high horsepower and torque engines in their cars - think F1 racing. They also have pro parts like tires and suspension but they're also pushing themselves to a level we barely ever touch. It's very exhausting on their whole system. For us weekend warriors, we're more like a BMW that someone takes to the track once a weekend or couple times a month but doesn't push it nearly as hard as an F1 race. So if we focus on ensuring our brakes, tires and engines are in fairly good condition, a day at the tracks is fairly safe for our power output. I tore both because I didn't bulletproof my other one, I just did the physio I needed on the my recovering one. That's why I recommend everyone to do physio on both. This'll bulletproof your achilles, like servicing your BMW for brakes, tires and suspension. I hope this makes sense. Thanks for coming to my TedX talk lol.
