I’m just coming over to saltwater from the freshwater world. Compared to freshwater there is a major gap in beginner knowledge on here. Thank you so much for making this.
Totally agree with you. It's strange how little beginner information there is for saltwater aquariums! We are hoping that this year long series will change that! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, and be sure to keep us updated with your progress in the hobby! We love seeing what other beginners do!
Subscribed! I just setup my first saltwater tank today and this video has been very helpful. I’ve been in the planted tank hobby for quite sometime and was intimidated to try saltwater tank.
So exciting! Tell me more about your new tank? Better yet, send me some pictures :-). contact (at) myfirstfishtank.com. I always love seeing new tanks! I'm glad this video was helpful. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
Thanks for the video. A lot of the concerns around costs, time, difficulty, etc. have to do with social media. The reef boards, RU-vid channels, etc. are all very heavily dominated by “stickheads” (SPS coral aficionados) with 120 gallon + aquariums with everything on controllers, $500 skimmers, massive sumps, auto dosing, every parameter constantly monitored, use salt mixes from Europe that cost 10x what Instant Ocean does, freak out over a 1 ppm nitrate reading and so forth. Their systems cost more than some cars. There are very few on social media with simple Petco style aquariums with HOB filters and skimmers, no sump, only “easy” fish. That is why I completely understand why so many think you need to be rich and have a lot of free time to get into the saltwater aquarium hobby.
Totally agreed. It can be daunting for true beginners stumbling into the hobby. So much information out there, and especially on the boards, a lot of it contradictory. Everybody is an expert in this hobby, and nobody is ever wrong! Very frustrating from time to time. Max and I are hoping this series will help those true beginners out there. Instead of getting turned off by the cost and work, maybe they can feel inspired and confident that they can have a saltwater tank, a beautiful tank, that doesn't have to break the bank. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. You are appreciated!
Hello!! congratulations for your channel, I have learned a lot watching your videos. Taking advantage of your experience, please help me to answer a question: I have a small mixed aquarium of 300 L (including sump) and I am going to renew the return pump, in the market (Mexico) the available options are: Vectra S2 or Octopus VisionS2 or VisionS4. Which of those options do you recommend? Thanks for replying and congratulations again. Cheers
Too much of a salesman. I really wanted to have more knowledgeable videos to watch i was excited, but his knowledge gets twisted in some areas so he can sell. Drove me away.
Ha, understandable. Okay, in my defense, they are from the kingdom of plants! But I'm a theology/philosophy major and took one chemistry class in college, so I had to look up the difference between plants and algae, but now know! I hope your bio degree was able to recover!!!
Hi mohammed. Yes, the filter should always be going. During a power outage, the most important things is to have some sort of battery powered air stone or wavemaker to keep oxygen in your tank so that the livestock does not suffocate to death. It's not a big deal if the power goes off for a few hours, but 12 hours or more can kill your fish from an oxygen standpoint.
My dream since I was little was to work with aquatic animals. I wasn't able to get a degree or anything unfortunately to do it as a job so the dream transformed to me wanting my own saltwater reef tank to still do that without a school degree. I live in a small apartment with a freshwater 10g & 5g guppy setup. My husband and I are saving for a house and I know once I get a larger living space I want to journey into the saltwater world and make my dream come true. I subscribed and are starting early research.
Looking forward to this series. I have been keeping freshwater fish for a few years and have three tanks (30, 55 & 75ga). Hoping to gain the knowledge to move into saltwater!
Ooh, what kind of freshwater tanks have you been keeping? I'm always interested in seeing pictures if you every want to send some my way! Well, I hope this series will be helpful to you. If we miss stuff or don't explain stuff well enough along the way, let us know so we can correct it, at least in the blog! Thanks for watching and commenting Rick!
@@MyFirstFishTankThe tanks were planted but the fish really enjoyed eating everything we tried to plant in them. 30 - Molly's, Tetras, African Dwarf Frog, Cory catfish and Bushy Nosed Pleco. 55 - community of Silver Dollars, Angle fish, Ruby shark, Rainbow fish, Tiger Barbs, Cory catfish and a pleco. 75 - Turtles tank with a large school of Yellow Cichlids. I'll join the community forum. Thanks for asking about my tanks!
No, we are releasing two videos each week! Tuesdays will be gallery updates, and Friday's are the new beginner series! So if you just want the Tuesday vids, ignore these Friday ones for 2021!
