Hey Buds! Welcome to week 11 of books being sick. Lots of stuff to share! Patreon/Book Club www.patreon.com/BooksAreSick This months books are sick book is CUJO.
The book club is a great idea! I’ve been looking for someone/a channel who is doing this sort of thing for a while and I’m really excited to join along. You’re killing it man, keep it up!
"I was within and without; simultaneously repelled and enchanted by the inexhaustible variety of life." ~ My favourite Gatsby quote and one of my favourite literary quotes of all time. I read that one last year and LOVED it too. There is something magical about reading a book that's almost 100 years old. GREAT!
I LOVED The Goldfinch, and thought The Secret History was fine. That said, I read them in that order and feel like Secret History might hit harder if you haven't already experienced the excellence that is The Goldfinch. I would recommend Secret History, then Goldfinch.
I loved Nick because of his passion for books, his natural and honest way of making content. Now I hear that he also wears the best shoes ever created AKA Crocs ? 😍
Damn, this is the first video of yours I’ve watched without the notification ping going off. 😢 But yeah, I just finished The Southern Reach trilogy today. Do read the other two. Different perspectives to Annihilation, but I enjoyed them both for the purpose they serve to the story. Just found out a fourth entry to the series is in the works too.
I loved Annihilation - I raced through the Trilogy. The second book was slower paced and it took a bit until it pulled me in, but the more I read the more I enjoyed it, and I read the third book in a day it was that awesome.
I've been reading since I was a toddler, and I studied English Literature, and there are still so many classics I haven't read! I read Metamorphosis for the first time last year (and loved it); I haven't read The Great Gatsby (yet); I haven't read any Dickens ever. Just saying, number of classics read says nothing about how much of a reader you are! And even though I've been reading for so long, in many ways I consider myself a new reader as well these days, because I used to really pigeonhole myself, only reading certain genres (genres which I still love!), and only fairly recently have I been actively looking for books outside of my 'comfort zone'. And even within my comfort zone genres there are so many books I never gave a chance, I was just always rereading the same books I already knew and loved. My point being, I guess, that although there is absolutely nothing wrong with identifying as a new reader, there also likely isn't really a point where you stop feeling like that. The world of books is so vast and expansive, there is always more to discover, more you've never heard of, new genres popping into existence, etc. Anyway, that's me taking a small fragment of a whole video way too seriously; I hope you enjoy your TBR, and I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
I think it is best to read Donna Tart in order of publication. Each one gets better IMO. Secret History was ok Goldfinch was deserving of the Pulitzer. The little friend is also really good. Ultimately all three should be on the list.
i've read both the secret history and the goldfinch. they're two of my favorite books of all time - i recommend reading the secret history first bc i think it will suck u into her prose and artistry. i think you will appreciate the goldfinch so much you MUST read it tho i feel that it's so underrated bc it's such a tomb it's not as accessible bc it's so intimidating but it's so so worth it 😭
When I retired 2 years ago, my co-workers bought me STACKS of gift cards to an independent book store in Sarasota FL. I have now used all the gift cards up 😢 and I'm in serious withdrawal. But now I'm using my Kindle and the Libby app. I'm adjusting!
The Secret History! 🙌 I’m old enough that I read the paperback when it first came out, and I was in my first year at university taking Classical Studies! It made my choice of subject seem much cooler. 😆
All great picks! Read the secret history if you're in the mood for a school setting. Read the Goldfinch if you want a epic read. Either way, Donna Tartt is amazing
I highly recommend The Secret History. It’s shorter and incredible. If you love Tartt’s writing style in The Secret History then you can read the Goldfinch. I loved both although The Secret History is my favorite by far. However, you can’t go wrong with either choice.
I was seeing The Secret History everywhere and I didn't realize it was 30 years old either! But I got it from the library and absolutely loved it. Absolutely worth all the hype.
I had the exact same misconception about The Secret History. Thought it was a new release sensation because it was everywhere on Booktok 😅 Then read it and realised it was a definite 90s babe. Still worthy of the hype though!
I vote "Goldfinch" first. It is big, but immediately immersive and I flew through that one. "Secret History" was a little more work and slower for me. I'm glad I read Goldfinch first because I think its the quintessential Donna Tartt if that makes any sense. BOTH great works, but that's my vote. Enjoy.
To the Lighthouse is so beautifully written, it will (hopefully) stun you into a puddle of delight. I'm currently reading Virginia Woolf's first novel, The Voyage Out, which so far is quite brilliant. What a genius she was!
I just read the secret history and i have to say that it takes you right in. There is mystery right from the start that keeps you invested and the characters and the plot damn. So delicious. Little slow at times, but after i finished I started love reading again.
I’m on my third year of my classics obsession. Same as you, I was just a casual reader before, then I started to think that it was wild that I hadn’t read things like 1984 or wuthering heights or the great gatsby and catcher in the rye. As well as Frankenstein or the count of Monte Cristo. I’d never even read A Christmas Carol by Dickens! So, now I have tons of classics on my bookshelves TBR which I love! I read Kafka’s Metamorphosis (I still think about it) then I also have Ovid’s Metamorphosis too! I’ve only dipped into ancient classics so far though, but I’ll get there at some point. I’ve managed over 100 classics so far and having loads of fun doing it 😊 (New releases are out the window for me right now though, I feel I need to catch up first lol)
I just recently found your channel and you and Jack Edwards are my favorite folks to watch talking about books! Are you on GoodReads? I'd love to follow along with you there!
I read The Secret History first. It was great but The Goldfinch is my favorite book of all time. I would recommend The Secret History first. Hope you like them both!
Super excited about the Book Club! Wondering if you could share the poll of books earlier (like middle of the month before it starts) so it gives us time to put the book on hold at our library or purchase?
'The Great Gatsby' is such a wonderful book! I VERY rarely reread books but I'm debating reading this for a third time this year 😂 happy you're enjoying it!
Agree with you about all those older classic books that are out there ... I recently bought East of Eden by Steinbeck. I've read and enjoyed other books by him, but somehow missed reading this one.... I have a vacation planned for next week and plan on reading this one during that time. ...... Thanks for another good weekly video ..... keep on keeping on
I recommend reading Secret History first. I read that in high school and it was so great. I'm so happy people are getting into Donna Tartt. I need to reread her and I'll finally have people to discuss her books! Goldfinch was not as good imo.
To be honest don’t read the Donna Tartt books back to back. They both have darker themes and I found them to be very nihilistic , which I love but back to back I would be so done after LOL. i would start with the goldfinch and then read the secret history, because if you like the goldfinch you will definitely like the secrete history , at least in my opinion.
I just completed the Southern Reach trilogy. I highly recommend HOWEVER book one makes sense. The next two are confusing Vague at times. A bit frustrating. But, about halfway through each one I could not put them down. Basically, your confusion mimics the extreme psychological effect of Area X. How much is real, what is psychosis, is it alien or of this earth? I have to say I resorted to online explanations, and found I had grasped more than I realized. This is one trilogy that must be read in order, as you read 2 and 3, no back story or summary of previous events will be offered. It makes you think. Dive in, what could possibly go wrong?
You liked Annihilation, I read the book (it was my kind of weird), and I've seen the movie and loved it. I loved the move Arrival and I recently read the book by Ted Chiang, I hope you try it out. I have yet to read Bell Jar and Cujo, but they are on my list to read! Not only that, but I loved the book Dead Astronauts by Jeff Vandermeer, but I'm not sue if folks will get it and love it as well.
I absolutely adore To the Lighthouse, but I want to warn you there is no plot. The basic plot is there is a boy who wants to go to the lighthouse. They don’t go, ten years pass, some people have died, and he finally goes to the lighthouse. The plot isn’t the point; it’s a beautiful story about so many things. I love it.
Thanks for your great content. It´s really relaxing and inspiring to hear you talk about books. I think, you should read "The Road" from Cormac McCarthy. It´s totally amazing!
The fact that you have Sula in between Cujo and Jurassic park and Sula lost is what is wrong with book tube lol on a serious note you’re moving in the right direction with your classic pick ups.
Hello, greetings from Mexico City! Love your video content ❤️ Would love it if you could do a book review on the Annihilation (especially on your take on the ending of the story!) 😊
I haven't read the Annihilation books, but I've heard if you want to watch the movie it has stuff from at least one of the other books in it. In case you want to wait to watch it. (I thought the movie was great. Can't wait to read the series)
I couldn't get into the Great Gatsby in highschool and tried a few weeks ago and still had to DNF. I recently started reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, it is remarkable and so much fun. I highly recommend checking it out.
Definitely The Secret History...I read this for the first time over Christmas break, lost myself in the characters world, will never leave my mind, reflect on the deeper meaning regularly. One of thr best books have read
You’re in for a treat with The Great Gatsby ! The Metamorphosis is amazing! Pay attention to the last page. Ah To the Lighthouse! None of that - it’s about the inner workings of a family on vacation in the Hebrides, I believe. You are in for SUCH a treat with The Secret History. Read Secret History first!!!!
me reporting for duty when the notif drops for a new video from nick 🫡 cannot wait for the book club i'll be participating for sure. why? bc books 🕺🏼 are 💃🏻 SICK🫅
