The thing about Mary is that she grew up poor in the projects surrounded by gang violence, drugs, prostitution, guns popping every night, struggling to live... and she sang about her life and was a voice for the girls that grew up like that... then she made it big and showed everyone that a girl from the projects CAN succeed in anything she wants if she works for it.
