Even though Blood Meridian was by far the most violent book I've ever read, there is one scene that has stuck with me more than any other. I remember reading it and feeling the ground shake through his writing. Even though it was a difficult book for me I'm glad I finished it and hope I will eventually do a reread. Cormac makes you feel things with his writing and I haven't been able to say the same for many other authors.

I'm reading Lolita for the first time now, and it has, by far the greatest opening paragraph of any novel. The writing is absolutely amazing. I'm jealous of the copy of the Brother Karamazov you picked up. I got a 1961 Library collection of the stories and plays of Anton Chekov.

It's insane that 1984 was written in 1949. So prescient! Sandra Newman's new book, JULIA/1984 (still in hardcover) is a retelling of 1984 from the character of Julia's perspective. It's gotten a lot of great buzz. Can't wait to read it, but I always wait for the paperback version (mostly since I read in bed--and also they're much cheaper).

Most welcome! To expand on 1984- I tell my high school students this book is like a "nuke for the mind"...your life before reading 1984 and your life after reading 1984 are two different worlds. This piece isn't simply a classic work of fiction. It delves into themes such as philosophy, history, psychology and the perception of reality in a nuanced manner with the highest literary finesse only George Orwell can deliver. This book, isn't just a book, it is as worthy as a Rembrandt, a melody by Tchaikovsky or The Alhambra in Granada, it is a pure work of art!

My favorite Steinbeck is The Grapes Of Wrath. I have 2 arguments as to why it should be your first. One is that it's a book when it's not being banned or censored is often recommended for Summer reading for high schoolers (it was for me and was my introduction to Steinbeck). The second reason is that it can be a banned book and that means there are truths in that book that 'they' don't want you to see. But ultimately having read both you can't go wrong. Both familial tales, both long, both have extraordinary characters and both have something to say about us as humans and cultural traditions. Can't wait to see what you choose. :)

East of Eden is my top five favorites of all time. I read it more than a decade ago and reread it a few times after and still holds as my favorites after reading hundreds more after it. Of Mice and Men isn't a bad place to start either though! I feel it will only make you want to read East of Eden more and it should take you a sitting for Of Mice and Men. Writing style is quite different in the two, but maybe because East of Eden is more deep and a family saga.

Revival was cool for me since it gave me a little perspective into King's musicianship along with how he handled the overall story. I paid my 500 for what is a US first edition of Dracula😅. A British copy is only about 10,000😅😅😅, so small chance there lol. A book that only gets better with age? I've been buying hard copy books that have multiple stories by classic authors - Washington Irving, Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Poe, Lovecraft, Mary Shelley, and Robert Louis Stevenson. Now I gotta read 'em😅. Great channel sir. Blessings!

THE Steinbeck is The Grapes of Wrath. That book is The Classic for a reason!! Of Mice & Men is prob essential to read bc it's his most read thanks to high school curricula but tbh having reread it as i read through all of steinbeck's work... it's soooo middle of the road in comparison. Was a bit disappointed in East of Eden not going to lie. It was amazing!! Don't get me wrong! But comparatively to The Winter of Our Discontent, To a God Unknown, the Pastures of Heaven, the Grapes of Wrath, & now Travels with Charley... I don't think it takes the cake. Would 1000% recommend the Penguin Classics edition of The Winter of Our Discontent - the introduction rly enhanced the reading experience! He was so gutted by the book's reception that it became his last novel :(

Love East of Eden! But I think I’d say that Grapes of Wrath is a better first Steinbeck. Whatever the case, enjoy! 🙌🏼

Also, highly recommend For Whom the Bell Tolls when you move on from Hemingway’s short stories.

Okay great to know! I had meant to ask which of Hemingways non short stories would be ideal as well.

I have one of those editions of The Brothers Karamazov but it's the Philosophy of Nietzche. Dostoevsky is my favorite author by a LANDSLIDE, and if you haven't read Crime and Punishment before I recommend you get on that ASAP. Though you truly cannot go wrong with Dostoevsky, honestly.

Lots of cool reads there id like to get to. I read my first Dostoyevsky last year with Crime and Punishment and loved it. Hoping to get to BK soon. I actually read The Hobbit recently for the first time and I picked up one volume Lord of The Rings during the week! I dont even know who I am anymore, but I love it.

I've just seen this video now - Revival is one of Stephen King's best books, easily one of his best late-career novels. He truly sticks the landing on it and takes the ending to a weird, terrifying place.
