Cūḷa Taṇhāsaṅkhaya Sutta, “Shorter Discourse on the Destruction of Craving”, From the Majjhima Nikāya or The Middle-Length Discourses (MN 37).
Today's sutta exploration session was devoted to the Cūḷa Taṇhāsaṅkhaya Sutta (“Shorter Discourse on the Destruction of Craving”), where Lord Buddha gives a brief, encapsulating teaching to Sakka, the King of Devas, that nothing is fit to be clung to, or 'entered into.' Though delighted in this amazingly deep teaching, Sakkha returns to the sensual pleasures of the heavenly realm where he visited Lord Buddha from, thus losing touch with the sense of urgency to attain full Release from suffering, without delaying it. Out of compassion, and to arouse urgency in Sakkha's mind, the Ven. Mahamogallana pays Sakkha a visit, where he teaches the Deva a lesson, by causing an earthquake in Sakkha's palace merely by the touch of his big toe!
As Bhante Candana discussed the sutta with listeners, he shared many tools by which practitioners today could keep themselves on track in their training in the Dhamma, by arousing urgency within the heart, while maintaining mindful wise attention, by asking themselves: "Is this taking me to Nibbāna?" If the answer is no, Bhante said, then simply drop it, and pick up that which WILL take you to Nibbāna.
