Week 22: Renovating our original 1970s Kitchen | Painting kitchen cabinets DISASTER | Tough week

This week we worked on finishing installing kitchen cabinets, fixing brick on the outside of the house, and painting kitchen cabinets. I got a spray paint tent to be able to use a paint sprayer to paint cabinet doors. That quickly turned into a disaster when priming the doors was not turning out as expected. We wasted so much product, tried two different paint sprayers, and ultimately decided to hand paint the color on the cabinet doors. After I painted 2 coats of color on all doors I realized I messed up! I didn't separate the doors that were supposed to be a different color than the rest for the kitchen peninsula.

I’m watching you guys while I’m at work and I’m dreading when we start our kitchen. The good news for us is we are not taking the cabinets down because they are strong cabinets. We are just replacing the doors along with other things.

@@theyorks I really would like to demolish my kitchen and start again, it’s a lovely big room but the layout doesn’t make sense. But you have made me see it’s not as easy as we would like to think it is! Positive: you have gained so many new skills. Hopefully they have given you ideas for new projects and content? After a vacation, of course 😘

What are we doing while we watch you work on your kitchen? We are suffering through our own kitchen renovation 🤣 We’ve had different challenges along the way but also doing a lot of the work ourselves and MAN is this crap hard! I am dying to clean everything and move everything back into the cabinets and install doors and hardware but we are still waiting on them to finish curing. It doesn’t help that I am 39 weeks pregnant and planning a home birth 🤣 Y’all are troopers and watching you suffer through the same BS gives me something to look forward to every Monday!

I feel you on every level here 😣 it’s so hard and the mess alone is enough to drive you crazy. I hope you guys have no hiccups and make it to that finish line asap! I think you can order touch up paint that matches what ever color you pick for your cabinets. I know you want to finish and get done but Elvis is right slow and steady gets the job done and it’s right. Also the brick is perfect. See you next week GREAT JOB

That’s good to know! Elvis is definitely right but I hate it 🤣 i can see that finish line and I just want to race now but I know it it will be worth it to be patient 😏 because it will get done eventually 🙌

I’m currently staining my Cabients a pottery brown finish. It’s very long and hard process. I have to redo some of them. Definitely try to slow down and do step by step. This is coming from someone who has been renovating for 1.5 years. Living with no stove and no kitchen sink.

Are you going to do anything to make the cabinets go all the way to the ceiling?

Yes 👍 It’s going to be close but not all the way to the ceiling since we had problems with bathrooms upstairs leaking (creating mold in the drywall we couldn’t see). If that ever happens again we want to be able to visibly see the problem happening and have easy access to fix it 😊
