I saw someone do a video where they stood in a busy area with a sign that read "Convince me to read your favorite book"...it was a lot of fun to watch...I would love to see you try something like that.
This may sound strange, but I have reached for Night rereads a few times when experiencing depression. It is a perspective-shifting jolt of inspiring resilience.
I was struggling with Circe also until I hit about the halfway point, and then I suddenly flew through it!! The second half is definitely way more interesting!
I struggled through Circe as well. It got such rave reviews that I thought maybe it was just talked up so much that my expectations were too high. But seeing you’re struggling too makes me see it wasn’t just me.
If you like memoirs, I’d highly recommend when breath becomes air by by Paul Kalanithi. It’s incredibly moving, a bit of a heartbreaker and short book. I hope you’ll check it out ❤
Haven't been able to catch all of your recent videos, but can always catch up... Glad to see the channel is dong well, I hope to start my book channel later this fall (inspired by you). Thanks for all you're doing. Barry
I happen to be reading Circe, too, and I'm glad I'm not the only one struggling 😭 the audiobook has helped, but I didn't start that until I was over halfway.
We bought 3 English cucumbers last week and have another 3 waiting in our fridge! The guy has blown up my Instagram and we’ve been trying his recipes too! The PB with chili oil was great!
Night absolutely destroyed me. One of the most harrowing, yet most wonderfully written books ever. It stayed with me for days after reading it. Unforgettable. It totally deserved the Nobel prize.
I'm about two thirds of the way through it. It's really good! I wish I kept notes on all the characters and relationships because it gets a bit confusing at times.
I struggled with Circe too. M. Miller doesn’t have much original authorship. She just combined all of the Circe references from other stories into one timeline. I think i lot of people don’t realize how little of the story is her own creation.
I mean, it’s literally a retelling of a Greek mythological figure… I think a lot of people realize that about it. It’s more the way that it’s styled that makes it special. It’s fine. You didn’t like it, but that doesn’t mean that you have to pretend like the people that do like it are ignorant and don’t know anything about mythology lol
I have a degree in Classics (Greek Bronze Age). I’ve absolutely loved all the retelling of the Greek myths for a modern (and from a female perspective) audience. Madeline Miller is such a great story teller.
Night is a terrible tragic experience. There are two or three follow-up books, but they don’t necessarily add to the narrative. Although it tells more of his life, but it seems like fiction. Nice interview!
I've been avoiding Circe for a while, but when I saw you were reading it this month, I thought I'd try it. I am also struggling about halfway through. I'll stick it out, though, after reading the comments.
Outsiders is the best, but zero motorcycles. You absolutely NEED to read it. Disagree about Grease 2 (but I’m old enough to have seen the original Grease in the theater.)
Wish the people you interviewed could mention who wrote the books, cause I really wanna read the book she recommended (sorry bad with names). The book she is talking about: A House in the Sky, written by Amanda Lindhout
I loved the zoo animal video 😆 And this is my favorite channel on RU-vid. Books and just a chill dude with legitimately interesting things to say, even when you’re just showing us a microphone or a plant on your desk 😆 keep it up
Hey Nick, here is a little appreciation comment. I just got married this weekend (a very small, civil wedding) and I wanted to tell you that the work that wedding photographers make is not enough appreciated. If you are so busy then that means you are great at what you do, keep up the good work!
I just found your channel! We have very similar taste in books and the ones you didn't like or struggled through, I did as well; The Girl Who Love Tom Gordon, Circe, etc. I've read every Stephen King novel and some I love, but some I think he's too politically curmudgeonly to finish. Anyway, love your channel.
I never struggle. Too many books to love and enjoy to ever struggle. I will drop a book when I lose interest. And I read War and Peace, so I know i can stick to things. But I was engaged and that is key.
Whew, when I first read Circe, I could not believe it was by the same author who wrote the amazing The Song of Achilles. While her writing style, which I adore, remained consistent, the storyline in Circe felt rather stagnant. Considering Circe’s fascinating journey, I was initially excited but ended up disappointed.
I hated what I read of Circe. I didn't have to read it (eg, for book club) so I DNF'ed it pretty early on. I hope it picks up for you. Maybe you'll report that by the end it becomes great.
I understand the cap/comfort thing. I've recently taken to it (though not indoors) and I wear a beanie, constantly in the Winter. That said, and I hope you don't mind me saying, but you look great without the cap! 😉😉 Oh, and Grease 2? Utterly awful! 😉😉
I was very into Circe for a short amount of time and then it was suchhhhh a struggle and I didn't care much at all. Her writing is great but it's hard when the story isn't interesting. It's put me off from Son of Achilles honestly.
