Week 9 with our 17 week old Vizsla puppy. This week we started using a house line to help with the biting! Product links in channel description. Coat from Pets at home #Vizsla #Vizslapuppy #puppy Music www.bensound.com
I had a Vizsla from 2000-2013 until she passed. It was the best animal I have ever had. She did require lots and lots of off leash time, minimum 45 minutes, twice a day. She did have separation issues, we let her sleep in bed with us and kept her in a crate when we left the home. She was part of the family and took many many 12-13 hour road trips with us. She taught many non dog lovers to be dog lovers and broke all the barriers of visiting people with the finest homes as she was so clean. You will see as time passes you will never have any other breed.
I love your commentary and the effort you give with Lord C every week. Thank you for the updates. I was going to get a Vizsla puppy but realized it would be too much for me. I love Lord Cannon, but he's quite the adorable handful.
Thank you! I think he is just extremely energetic! Vizslas are amazing, I don’t want to put you off! If you have lots of time on your hands and love being outdoors for lots of walks and play a Vizsla is great. 😊🐾🐾
My sister has hers now! He loves it there, but he is also jumping and biting our legs so don’t worry your not the only one 🤣 and he doesn’t like his cage when the door is shut but is fine when it’s open but Everything els is good and is doing his business outside mainly on had him for 3 days but is settling in good keep you updated!!🐾
Thanks for keeping me updated! I’m glad he is setting in well. Now we are using a house line it’s a bit easier, I wish we would have used it from the start! 😊
What may help with the cage is when he is placed in the cage stay with him until he settles down, try giving him high value rewards when the door is shut. Remember for a social animal separation from the pack is stressful especially for a young puppy.
Hi Both, Just want to say thank you for your videos. We are in the same boat. WTF have we done? haha. Some ok days, but some terrible days!! It is really nice having this reference and seeing people going "its not just us" basically. THank you, i am trying not to watch too far ahead (ours is 14w old atm) so I am hopeful there is a video later saying how awesome it is in 6 months or so :P
Thank you! He is two tomorrow and I have to say that he is so much easier now, compared to when he was a puppy, there is hope!! 🤣 He still needs a lot of exercise and is still pretty crazy, but better! 🤣😊
I have had numerous dogs (2 Vizsla's & 2 German Longhair Pointers) as an adult; growing up had a similar number of mutts. The one thing that seemed to help with the biting was the second they start to mouth scream in pain, act like you are seriously hurt and instantly stop playing with the puppy. You have to realize that as a puppy their explore their world by mouthing things and once they realize that all fun activities stop the second they mouth you they learn not do it. We lost our last Vizsla December 5, 2019 at the age of 15 1/3 years. Hopefully later this year we will be looking at getting another Vizsla.
Thank you for your videos! Our vizsla, Pepper, turns 11 weeks tomorrow! These videos have definitely helped us. She’s doing great, trying to work with her more on liking her crate. We’d love a full nights sleep lol
Ours is now 18 months old. He is our second vizsla. Our first lad , sadly gone, was a puppy 16 years ago . We’d forgotten just how difficult a young vizsla is. Perhaps our first turned into such a wonderful dog that the puppy problems were forgotten.. My wife used to dread being left alone with our current lad when he was between 9 and 24 weeks . Stick with it. Our boy started calming around 6 months and now he is a dream.
Hang in there! love your videos. Canon appears very smart and very confident and at the high end of the energy range. You will have a wonderful vizsla in the end. Good plan with the house line! Agree with other comments best to be proactive but ok to be reactive when he goes after your legs. Watch how a mother dog corrects her pups for an example... Swift NO then it's over. Miss my vizsla they are wonderful..
I love watching your videos .. I have a 17 week old Cavoodle ... don't let the small size fool you .. same issues. We had a cavoodle for 14 years who was very placid, and this one is so different .. finds any mischief, jumps any obstacle, considers nipping his obligation in life .. just as well he is very cute and adorable. We also reserve his cage for sleeping and fun, and have started using a house line ... that's been a work in progress for a couple of weeks now, but I think he's slowly getting used to it. I look forward to comparing notes with what Lord Cannon's up to next week :)
It’s hard work isn’t it!! Hopefully things will improve with the house line. Keep me updated with your progress and any tips that you find that work well! 😊
Stick at it. Your care and love for your dog will have its rewards. Do it your way to the best of your ability, no one can do more. Don't listen to all the tips and advice that you get. Ask 10 people and you'll get 10 tips and advice and you'll get confused. Find an expert that you trust and go with their experience. All the best
Alan Senior thanks again for a warts and all honest video. Only 3 days till Bentley arrives !! i realise you are showing LC,s behavior to show us what you are experiencing but do you correct him when for instance he is following you around the kitchen biting you. while we will be doing the positive training i dont see anything wrong with a fairly firm NO and then removing him to another room for a couple of minutes. i also realise its extremley easy to offer advice when you havent got a puppy of your own, lol. keep up the good work. we love your videos because they are so real, when you watch YT Videos they hardly ever show you when thier pup doesnt respond to training, its all neatly done in twenty minutes, YEAH RIGHT.
Proactive training is more successful than reactive training. The house line will help to train Cannon what is the better choice to make. Consistency with leadership is essential.
Keep it up you're doing really well. You just need a few little tweaks to your approach while he's going through this phase. For example, when playing find the chicken get him to sit and wait as an indicator and then reward. Not only is it a nice new trick, but he'll need to focus on you as the releaser of the food and it will further establish your leadership - which you should be doing with every interaction. Best wishes
Hi, in our experience (our puppy is 1 week behind in age) the only thing that helps to get rid of the excess energy is to let him meet other dogs and play (same age if possible) 1-2 hours of play and he will be a perfect dog for the rest of day.
Almost 30 years ago I met a woman who had 2 German Shepard's at one of the local dog parks and she gave me the best advice I have ever received and I would like to pass it on. The key to a well behaved dog is exhaustion, both physically and mentally.
i have a 15 week vizsala and in my experience taking them to dog park helps alot, burns off all the access energy and is great exercise. Plus helps with socialization
Thanks for your advice. Unfortunately the UK is in a full lockdown so it’s difficult for him to socialise at the moment. We do see a few dogs on our walks. Once lockdown is over I will get him out playing with other dogs. 😊🐾
Lord Cannon The Vizsla take him out where he can run! Off leash! Ours is six months and another's two, soon I hope we will get a female to round out the group!
@@LordCannonTheVizsla glad to hear that! He seems to be pretty stable through the day except if we have to leave the room. His pen turns into a torture box and he shrieks-so so tough to hear! 😩 we’ll work through it. It’s so helpful to hear you guys are getting through cannons stuff too! One day at a time! 🙌🏻
@@bethnewman8582 Lord Cannon is exactly the same, if you leave the room he doesn’t stop barking! Plus we had that problem with the playpen too. Like you said, one day at a time! 😊🐾
He is adorable! Waiting for ours to be born in the next year! Check out Zac George and Standing Stone Kennel training videos. They really help grasp around the concepts of the trainings and make it easier to understand and do. Good luck!
How much weight does he have? We have also female Viszla 4 months old, but she looks a lot thinner. My wife is constatly saying to give her more food, but I think she would eat as much as I give. We let her off the leash to run and play with other dogs for 1 hour maybe more and the she spends spme energy and behaving nicely in apartment ;)
She sounds amazing! Behaving nicely! Cannon was nearly 13 KG a few weeks ago so I would say he’s about 15KG now. Maybe check with your vet. I just go with the guidelines on the food packet for his age. Plus a lot of chicken/treats as bribes!! Lol! 😂🐾
@@stefanstojanovic7596 I’ve just weighed him, 14.7 KG, he is a boy though so I imagine girls would be smaller. I would have a chat to your vet if your worried for sure. 😊🐾
Yes we are, it just gives us a bit more control if he tries to jump up on the sofa or on the side. We have managed to control the craziness inside a bit more now. 😊🐾
@@LordCannonTheVizsla You are giving me hope. I have read so much to prepare for the puppy but reality with a vizsla pup is just crazy. Thank you for you honesty in this channel and for sharing the pleasure and pain.
A house line is a great idea. I would correct him when he bites. Just teach him to know what No means followed by correction. I like watching you videos. Thank you :)
Hi, guys! What means house line? Sorry, my English. Just can't understand. We have have now 12 weeks old puppy. And he drives us crazy by his behaviour. Biting, destroying, barking at us when we try to calm him. We are close to fighting ))))
@@МарияСорока-т1х Hi, a house line is basically a long lead that the puppy wears in the house so he can’t run around everywhere being crazy. It’s helped us stop the biting and humping! 😊🐾
OMG i cant handle it he is so handsome! Dont worry the biting will stop, and as older he gets he will sleep more through the night. Also he will become much calmer after he gets neutered. Whitch part of england you guys in?
Hey, We’re looking into getting a vizsla, that trick where you throw treats in the grass to get him to find and retrieve them looks effective. Do you have any other suggestions on what mind games work best with them? Also where abouts are you guys in the uk- those walks look lovely!!
Hi, how exciting! We do a lot of find and retrieve, outside, inside, in boxes and cups. When we are not doing that we are training him. Eye contact, Sit, down, heel, leave it, drop, stay and recall. These work his brain and wear him out! Once he is older we will probably do some sort of agility and work on find it with other objects not just food. Hope that helps. 🐾
Yep, it's standard behaviours for Viszlas. Ours is 4 years old now and he's the centre of the family but hasn't been allowed to be the "alpha male". My wife has been with him pretty much every day since he came to live with us. When we holiday he comes with us in this country (we bought a crew cab van with this in mind, but not it's sole purpose), if we go abroad he goes to "holiday" with dog sitters, and we make sure they have dogs and countryside to socialise and exercise him. He comes back, fitter, tired and happy after two weeks of that. Anal gland leaks, if it becomes a thing ................................... a desert spoon of ground up pumpkin seed on every meal. And cold or frozen (especially in summer) carrots are a go to treat - you can shove them up an "empty" bone too as a puzzle to keep his interest. Our last dog was a Weimaraner and they are also head strong, but a Viszla is another level. I remind myself, he didn't choose to live with us so it's our responsibility to make sure his life is good ......................... discipline (not physical) is a must or they will take over. Great dogs and worth every effort.
Thanks for all of your comments, I will bear all of these in mind. I didn’t expect it to be such hard work! We intend do ‘van life’ with him when he is older too. 😊
@@LordCannonTheVizsla You're welcome - there also seems to be a link between diet and having a calmer Viszla; have a read up on it, keep an open mind and see what the results are if you try a change - our Viszla "Chester" has calmed down a lot, but it's hard to say whether diet was the answer; we changed him from a "working dog" diet to something that more suits his domestic lifestyle, albeit with a big garden and long country walks on most days. It is too early to experiment with your little boy's diet at so young an age (he needs the correct amount of nutrients and minerals to build a good body and frame - obvs), but it seems to be accepted by many folks that by giving them more energy than they can burn off can make them "fizz" like a firecracker. They are cute, but they must have stimulation and discipline to behave well, they need to know the boundaries and that takes consistency. Anyhow, enjoy your life with him, dogs are precious but have relatively short lives (sorry to get dark) - we'd miss Chester if .... well .... y'know ............ and like I said before, Chester didn't ask to live with us, so we are responsible for his well being and mental health. I talk too much :o/
@@stuarthossack7906 thanks for that, I will take a look at food options. Consistency and boundaries seem to be helping the most at the moment, I haven’t been bitten or humped in two days! 🤣🤣
My fam and I have a 12 week old Vis. Judging by your vids Cannon is much higher energy then our Copper. With that said you are much more laid back with your training(no offense) can’t believe you waited this long for a house line. Plenty of you tube vids out there on training, good luck.
I wanted to get a vizsla but now I'm scared to be honest 😂 it looks like he can make you a lot of problems. I'm a student and I'm going all around, and my budges is limited for buying toys and all that kind of stuff, don't think I'll be a good choise for a viszla...
@@LordCannonTheVizsla and the sweetest😍😍, when I see how playfull and full of joy he is, he makes me think maybe it dose deserve to go throw his wilderness 😂
This will only get worse. You need to establish your relationship. You are the leader he is the follower. Everything he get is from you on your terms. Food he gets from you he should watch you prepare it and he should see you eat it”pretend so he understands that you eat first” then he needs to sit quietly before you give him his bowl. After ten minutes the bowl goes away. He gets space from you. He should be in a crate or an ex-pen when he is not doing some training with you or going to potty. Before he gets out of the pen or crate he needs to sit and be quiet. When out of crate or pen always on a line. If he bites or nibbles at you tell him “ah-ah” then put him in the pen for time out until he is calm. Every time. When he bites his litter mates or his mom they correct him. If you don’t he will take the leadership role. When going potty on a leash then time to play in the yard for a short time then in house. Up on the bed or couch are leader levels, he has not earned yet. I recommend “respect training for puppies” by Michele Weston. Great book so everyone can be happy. Dogs are happy when you are the leader and define the rules for them. Best of luck.
Hang in there.....puberty.....your rewards are coming I promise. A Vizsla is a life changing experience and they are so loving and loyal. You are doing a great job with Lord Cannon. I could not imagine my life without a Vizsla in it and am thankful to Jesus for creating such a wonderful breed! Just remember you are in charge of the habits you will accept and the ones you don't want. You can teach Lord Cannon anything....anything. You must make him understand that you are the Alphas of the household. Thank you again for your video journey, I just love watching. Keep up the great job!
Let me know how you get on, there is a belief that the dog you have at 4.months is the dog you have for life. That scares me shirtless, can't do this for 15 years. Still love the bugger. That wasn't shirtless by the way.
:) that is happening, when people think they have a human little cute child. This is a dog, he is from a wolf family not a human one. He has no boundaries in YOUR house and YOUR garden. So why he will respect you?
@@LordCannonTheVizsla wish it will help you and your dog be more happier. Don't give up, when he will try to break this lines. Just stay strong on your territory and trust in yourself, so he can trust you too
He clearly has boundaries (child gate on stairs for instance) and as for you implying their home is not also their new dogs home... thats just mental. They're called DOMESTICATED PETS FOR A REASON 🤣😂
